I. Subject: United States Steel Super Steel Siding Residential
Steel Siding and Accessories.
II. Description: General: The horizontal or vertical steel siding
is formed from No. 29 gauge galvanized steel having interlocking
edges along each panel section. The panels are finished after form-
ing by applying a multiple coating electrostatically spray applied
enamel and then baked in ovens to achieve an optimum cure.
Horizontal siding is manufactured in 8 -inch clapboard style in
12 -foot 6 -inch lengths and double 5 -inch clapboard style in 12 -foot
lengths. Vertical siding is manufactured in a 16 -inch Board and
Batten style, in 9 -foot, 4% -inch panel lengths. The siding sections
contain 0.156 -inch by 0.375 -inch nailing slots spaced 15/8 inches
or. center to facilitate nailing to supporting members. Nails used
are 11/2-ir-ch or 2 -inch smooth shank No. 12 gauge, double -dipped
galvanized steel siding nails.
Installation on Existing Construction: The siding is applied over
existing wood siding % inch net or over wood stripping 1 b 2
inches nominal, spaced to match.the siding nailing slots. The siding
is nailed to the existing siding or stripping with the galvanized wire,
nails spaced at a maximum of 24 inches on center. Where the
siding is installed over wood siding less than % inch thick or over
materials other than wood siding, the nails are to have sufficient
length to penetrate not less than 1 inch into the wood studs beyond.
For installations direct to existing stucco, the siding is to have a
rigid insulative backing and be attached to each stud with the
typical nails, having a penetration into the wood member of no,
less than 1 inch. Siding without a rigid insulative backing is to be
installed on stripping where applied over stucco.

Nails driven through the nailing slots in the siding are to be
centered in the slots and shall not be, driven tightly against the
siding. Starter strips furnished by the manufacturer are to be
used as well as window and door trim accessories, window head
flashing, under -sill trim, inside and outside corner posts and corner
caps. Metal backers are to be installed behind all siding joints and
at ends, except when the siding is installed with the rigid insulative
backing, or for the Double -Five -Inch Clapboard Panels. Window
and door sills extending beyond the window or door casings are to
be cut off flush with the casing, old caulking removed and replaced
before the window and door trim accessories are installed. All wall
intersections with the roof construction are to be caulked.
Installation on New Construction: All weather -exposed surfaces
shall berotected in accordance with Section 1707 (a) of the
Code. Sing shall be applied with galvanized nails spaced not
more than 16 inches on center when application is direct to studs.
The nail spacing shall be not more than 24 inches on center when
application is over an approved sheathing of wood or plywood
having a %-inch minimum thickness. The nail penetration shall
be % inch minimum in or through the sheathing. The siding may
be applied over other sheathing, provided it is nailed to the
wood studs, spaced at a maximum of 16 inches on center, using
the same nails with a penetration of not less than 1 inch into the
studs. All window and door openings are to be thoroughly caulked,
unless metal trim is used. All starter strips, window and door trim,
window head flashing, under sill trim, inside and outside corner
posts, corner caps and backers at siding joints and ends are to
be installed as furnished by the manufacturer.
Identification: The panels are identified in the field by carton
imprint: "United States Steel Super Steel Siding." .
III. Evidence Submitted: Material specifications and salt spray
exposure tests are submitted.
Findings
IV. Findings: That the United States Steel Super Steel Siding
Residential Steel Siding and Accessories are 21ternate types of ex-
terior weather boarding to that specified in the Uniform Building
Code provided the materials and installation are in accordance
with this report.
This report is subject to annual re-examination.
