Since there are. -no continuous framing members spanning between roof dia,.— Mand foundation, the log walls are designed to span laterally between end walls, rather than vertically between —foundation. and diaphragm. In -plane shear forces from the roof diaphragm will be transferred into parallel <shear>walls similar to standard framed construc- tion. The in -plane shear forces between the logs is resisted via shear connections between the logs, such as Olympic 'Oly-Log' Log Home Fasteners <Design data attached>. The wall lines which are subject to in -plane shear forces are assumed to behave similarly to plates{walls} connected at the top to a rigid element. This rigid element is a multi -log assembly which serves to act as a collector and as a wind girt for out of plane loading. This rigid element is positively tied to the' ,plate{wall} elements by threaded rods at each panel end. This attachment encourages the assembly to act as a frame, and results in lower tie forces at the foundation level. Overturning forces, where critical, will be resisted by threaded rods at panel ends which will extend the full height of the wall, where a bearing plate will be used to transfer the tension from the rod into the wood member. This will allow any two log combination to develop some nominal moment capacity, regardless of span between horizontal supports. Additionally, although it is neglected for these calculations, the lag screws used to attach the logs will—tend to compress the logs together, giving. the assembly--a-'slight moment capacity between vertical points of -attachment.
