The purpose of the investigation was to verify compaction of the soils used as fill materials _-- ---- arrder the residence. The fill materials under the residence consist of three distinct layers. The top layer consists of a few inches of chip -seal. The middle layer consists of 18" of a soil -gravel mixture. The bottom layer consists of large rocks with soil in -fill between the rocks. The top layer (chip -seal) and the bottom layer (large rocks) were not compaction tested because neither the sand -cone nor nuclear density tests provide meaningful results in these types of material. A location on the north side of the building was selected for sampling of the middle layer. A sand cone test was employed to determine the compaction of the soil -gravel mixture. The result of the test, (sent previously) indicates 93% relative compaction of the soil -gravel fill material. The soil profile described above is in our opinion adequate for the intended purpose. If minor. settlement occurs the nature of the construction allows for the support of the home to be adjusted to compensate for any changes in elevation due to consolidation settlement. The perimeter of the residence requires erosion control to prevent undermining of the footing pads. The present condition of the perimeter allows water to drain directly on the soil supporting the structure and wash away the soil. The purpose of the investigation was to verify compaction of the soils used as fill materials under the residence. The fill materials under the residence consist of three distinct layers. The top layer consists of a few inches of chip -seal. The middle layer consists of 18" of a soil -gravel mixture. The bottom layer consists of large rocks with soil in -fill between the rocks. The top layer (chip -seal) and the bottom layer (large rocks) were not compaction tested because neither the sand -cone nor nuclear density tests provide meaningful results in these types of material. A location on the north side of the building was selected for sampling of the middle layer. A sand cone test was employed to determine the compaction of the soil -gravel mixture. The result of the test, (sent previously) indicates 93% relative compaction of the soil -gravel fill material. The soil profile described above is in our opinion adequate for the intended purpose. If minor settlement occurs the nature of the construction allows for the support of the home to be adjusted to compensate for any changes in elevation due to consolidation settlement. The perimeter of the residence requires erosion control to prevent undermining of the footing pads. The present condition of the perimeter allows water to drain directly on the soil supporting the structure and wash away the soil. Means of routing the water away from this area, (gutters etc.) or providing a material that will not be subject to erosion, (rocks, concrete, etc.) should be employed.
