Wolfe residence for compliance with required interior noise levels. The house is to be constructed on Cliffhanger Lane, northwest of the Skyway below Paradise. The building site is approximately 350 feet from the southbound lane of the Skyway, and is partially protected by a low ridge whose crest is about 50 feet in front of the homesite. The front of the two-story home will face the Skyway. The most recent (1991) traffic volumes on the Skyway, southwest of the Para- dise town limits were provided by Bob Jones of the Butte County Department of Public Works. Average daily traffic volumes were 8160 for the westbound lane and 8040 fro the east bound lane for a total of 16,200 vehicles daily. It was assumed that 200 vehicles were medium -duty delivery trucks. The year 2000 ADT was estimated at 18,000 light motor vehicles and 250 medium -duty trucks. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) model for estimating day -night noise levels (Ld.) produced a combined value for all vehicular traffic of 56 dB at the house walls nearest the Skyway 32 (See worksheets pages 1 & 2, plus work - charts). Year 2000 estimate produced a value of 57 dB at this same location. Peak noise events can exceed 76 dB as trucks accelerate uphill in the northbound lane. No reduction was made for the topography or a possible reduction in speed with the increase in traffic volume. The construction drawings of this home indicate that it exceeds minimum UBC and State of California energy standards, and will meet all noise attenuation. requirements. These design factors ensure that highway noises will not produce interior levels reaching 45 dB Ldp. The R-19 walls will produce about 40 dB of attenuation, while the bedroom and bathroom windows, facing towards the Skyway should produce a minimum of 27 dB of attenuation. The combinedexterior wall noise rating will be 30 dB, reducing day -night interior noise levels from the Skyway to 26-27 dB, and peak episodes to 46 dB or lower. "Norwesco polyethylene tanks can store most liquid fertilizers, pesti- cides, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Use with any other material is not recommended because it may cause tank failure or breakage and result in personal injury or property damage. Further, some of the insecticides and fungicides may contain chemicals or con- centrations of chemicals that cannot be safely stored in a polyethylene tank. Check with your chemical supplier to determine what chemicals and concentrations of chemicals are in your material and whether the material can be safely stored in a polyethylene tank. GBR • 7/16" Residential Concealed, Pendent and Recessed Pendent • 1/2" Residential Pendent and Recessed Pendent • 1/2" Residential Sidewall and Recessed Sidewall Glass BulbAutomatic Sprinklers Manufactured by: Central Sprinkler Company 451 North Cannon Avenue, Lansdale, Pennsylvania 19446 Product C!:M Description The Central Model GBR Automatic Sprinklers embrace the ultimate in advanced design features. They incorporate the latest in glass bulb technology, which result in a much smaller more attractive sprinkler. The operating mechanism consists of a liquid -filled 3 mm diameter frangible capsule that is only 2.0 cm in length. The Model GBR Automatic Sprinklers are intended for installation in accordance with current NFPA 13, NFPA 13D and RN Technical Data Residential Applications NFPA 13R Standards. They are available in 7/16" and 1/2" orifice sizes, and a 1550F/680C temperature rating. The Model GBR Sprinklers, escutcheons, and concealed plates are available in brass or chrome plated and white painted, with additional special painted finishes available. Operation: The glass bulb capsule operating mechanism contains a heat - sensitive liquid that expands upon application of heat. Upon reaching the rated temperature, the frangible capsule ruptures thereby releasing the orifice seal. The sprinkler then discharges water in a pre -designed spray pattern to control or extinguish the fire. The Model GBR Automatic Sprinklers are intended for Residential Applications in accordance with NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, and NFPA 13R. Model r Thread Def- & Deflector Nominal Temp. Deviations from these requirements and standards or any alteration to the sprinkler itself will void any warranty made by Central Sprinkler Company. In addition, installation must also meet local government provisions, codes, and standards as applicable. The system piping must be properly sized to ensure the minimum required flow rate at the sprinkler. Check for the proper model, style, orifice size, and temperature rating prior to installation. Install sprinklers after the piping is in place to avoid mechanical damage; replace any damaged units. Wet pipe systems must be protected from freezing. Upon completion of the installation, the system must be tested per recognized standards. In the event of a thread leak, remove the unit, apply new pipe joint compound or tape, and reinstall. Installation Sequence Step 1. The unit must be installed in the pendent position for pendent sprinklers, and in the sidewall position for sidewall sprinklers. Step 2. Use only a non -hardening pipe joint compound or Teflon" tape. Apply only to male threads. Step 3. Install the sprinkler according to the dimensions shown in the installation diagrams on pages two, three, four and five of the technical bulletin. Install the escutcheon skirt onto the sprinkler prior to its engagement into the reducing fitting. For recessed applications, do not use the push - on escutcheon plate to hold the unit ' Teflon is a trademark of the DuPont Corp. in position. Tpe,sprigkler will only function properly when anchored to the building structure. Step 4. Hand tighten the sprinkler into the fitting. Then use a Central Universal Wrench to tighten the unit into the fitting. A leak -tight joint• requires only 7 to 14 ft.-Ibs. of torque; a tangential force of 14 to 28 lbs. delivered through a 6" handle will deliver adequate torque. Torque levels over 21 ft.-Ibs. may distort the orifice seal, resulting in leakage. Universal Wrench Caution: Special care must be taken when installing sprinklers with a CPVC system. Sprinklers must be installed after the manufacturer's recommended setting time for the primer and cement to ensure that neither accumulate within the sprinkler. Special care must be taken when installing with a copper system. Sprinklers must be installed only after the inside of the sprinkler drop and associated fittings have been wire brushed to remove any flux. Residual flux can cause corrosion and in extreme cases can impair proper sprinkler operation. Care & Maintenance Sprinklers must be handled carefully. They must not be trans- ported or stored where ambient temperature may exceed 100°F/ 38°C. For best results, store them in a cool, dry location in the original shipping package. Do not install sprinklers that have been dropped or visibly damaged. Sprinklers should never be painted, coated, plated, or altered in any other way from manufactured condition or they may not function properly. Any sprinklers altered in such manner must be replaced. The owner is responsible for the proper operating condition of all fire protection devices and accessories. The NFPA standard 25 entitled, "Inspection, Testing and Mainte- nance of Water -Based Fire Protec- tion Systems", contains guidelines and minimum maintenance require- ments. Furthermore, the local Authority Having Jurisdiction may have additional regulations and requirements for maintenance, testing, and inspection that must be obeyed. It is recommended that sprinkler systems be inspected regularly by a qualified inspection service. Length of time between such inspections can vary due to accessibility, ambient atmosphere, water supply, and site activity. Do not attempt to re -assemble or otherwise reuse a sprinkler that has operated. Replace any sprinkler exhibiting corrosion or damage; always use new sprinklers of the same type and temperature rating as replacements. Because the discharge pattern is critical to protection of life and property, nothing should be hung or attached to the sprinkler unit that would disrupt the pattern. Such obstructions must be removed. In the event that construction has altered the original configuration, additional sprinklers may need to be installed to maintain the protection level. Do not attempt to replace sprinklers without first removing the fire protection system from service. Be certain to secure permission from all Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and notify all personnel who may be affected during system shutdown. A fire watch during maintenance periods is a recommended precaution. To remove the system from service mode, first refer to the system operating guide and valve instruction. Drain water and relieve pressure in the pipes. Remove the existing unit and install the replacement, using only the special sprinkler wrench. Be certain to match model, style, orifice, and temperature rating. A fire protection system that has been shut off after an activation should be returned to service immediately. Inspect the entire system for damage and replace or repair as necessary. Sprinklers that did not operate but were subjected to corrosive elements of combustion or excessive temperatures should be inspected, and replaced if need be. The Authority Having Jurisdiction will detail minimum replacement requirements and regulations. WATER SUPPLY 2.1 Adequate source of water See p. 536 of Handbook.- acceptable water supply sources. Usually (d) a stored water source with an automatically operated pump. P. 535 Sec. 2-1 says that when stored water is used as the sole source of supply, the minimum quantity shall equal the water demand rate times 10 minutes. Per Sec. 4-1.1 p. 555, the minimum demand rate is 13 gpm times the number of design sprinklers required (p. 556, Sec. am mMM --- = ers .. If the demand rate of the specified sprinkler is greater, use that value. Therefore the minimum quantity of the proposed tank is: 2 X 13 gpm X 10 min. = 260 gals. If=the .tank supplies both the fue.sprinklei`sysferri:and the 'domesticuse, 5—go 7 (Sec. 2-3, p. 538) is added to the demand rate. ((2 X 13 gpm) +5 gpm) X 10 min. = 310 gals. A166;`916 w wafer alarm must, activate when"the water level falls below`:110% 'of the minimum quantity (Sec..A-2-2 p. 536). These values are written on the Fire Sprinkler Notes form. 2.2 Adequate pressure @ source If city water, is pressure adequate for design? If tank, min. requirement must be stated on plans. See 5. CALCULATIONS below for min. requirements. 3. PIPE AND FITTINGS 3.1 Type of material See p. 545 of Handbook: 3-3 Piping. Acceptable materials shown in Table 3-3.1. CPVC is also allowed and is usually used. See the Central Sprinkler catalog for the equivalent lengths table. 3.2 Size of pipe See p. 566 of Handbook: 4-4 Pipe Sizing. Pipe size is determined by the hydraulic calculations provided by the C-16. See 5. CALCULATIONS below. 3.3 Supports Show requirement and placement. 4. SPRINKLER HEADS 4.1 Location per code See p. 574 of Handbook: 4-6 Location of Sprinklers. Sprinklers are required in all areas with 5 exceptions. These exceptions are important. 4.2 Spacing/ coverage See p. 558 of Handbook: 4-1.4 Sprinkler Coverage. Maximum coverage and spacing as stated in NFPA 13D must be used unless the sprinklers are rated for greater coverage and spacing. See the manufacturer's specifications for the sprinklers provided by the C-16. 4.3 Type specified The sprinkler head type must be shown on the plans especi0y:-if more than one type is used. Check the manufacturer's data for the K -value and compare to the C -16's talcs. 5. CALCULATIONS 5.1 Static ® source See p. 572 of Handbook: Figure A-4-4.3(2) at the bottom of the page. Calculation sheet for booster pump supply systems. This information will be in the calcs provided.. 5.2 Head loss See p. 573, 567-568, 572 and 577-578 of Handbook. P. 573 gives the calculation procedure requirements for pump systems. P. 567-568 outlines the method of calculation. P. 572, Figure A-4- 4.3(1) is a calculation sheet. P. 577-578 shows an example calculation. Most C-16 calculations are similar in format and easy to follow along and check. Verify elevation losses, losses for piping (equivalent lengths), and losses for fittings (see attached "Fitting Models" for clarification of type of fitting). 5.3 Adequate residual for head See p. 555 of Handbook: 4-1.1 Design Discharge. The required design discharge (the flow) is 18 gpm to one sprinkler (farthest from the supply) and 26 gpm for two sprinklers (in the same room farthest from the supply). (Add 5 gpm to these values for systems that supply both sprinklers and domestic supply.) The greater of these values or the sprinkler requirements must be used in the calcs.'The - must do the --calculation for aeacgk44-4casa a Mostdesigners_ calculate:the-`two:sprinklers faithesf::from { su 1 ` regarddless if _ .e,,' Ike _same•I55f s ^&conservative P. 573 shows the calculation to determine the pressure required by each case. Q = the flow. K = the K -value of the sprinkler. The pressure provided by the system must be greater than this calculated P plus the losses (see 5.2 above).
