As per your request, this letter is an explanation of railroad car construction in regards to mounting the car bo'dy on a permanent foundation. You will note that the car, as originally manufactured by - AMERICAN CAR & FOUNDRY, with trucks, couplers, and air brake equipment, weighed in at 42,400 pounds. This car body, minus trucks, couplers, and air brake equip- ment, ' would weigh approximately half of that, (42,400 pounds), or approximately 21,200 pounds. Between ten or eleven tons would be a good estimate. Railroad car bodies are designed to be supported at two points only. The body bolsters above the center of the trucks, carry the total weight of the car AND LOAD, in this case, Op to 40 tons. The cars have a "jacking pad" built into the e*nd of the bolsters, to facilitate re -railing, or lifting, by jacks or cables. The bolsters have center plates that take most of the weight, and side bearings situated outboard, to stop the car from tipping.. The car body should be supported at the bolster only. -1- Support at other locations, will either bend, or break, the frame members. Depending on the type of.soil, either concrete piers, or a pobred concrete foundation, should be used, BUT, UNDER THE CAR BODY BOLSTER ONLY.
