Sealed engineering drawings from Truswal will show the required number and approximate locations of braces for each member needing bracing. In general, this bracing is done by using Truswal Systems Brace-ItTM or a 1 x or 2x member (attached to the top or bottom edge of the member) running perpendicular to the trusses and adequately designed, connected and braced to the building per the building designer (See ANSI/TPI current version). The following are other options (when CLB bracing is not possible or desirable) that will also satisfy bracing needs for individual members (not building system bracing): 1. A 1x4 or 2x4 structurally graded "T" brace may be nailed flat to the r edge of the member (up to 2x6 web members only) with 10d common or box nails at 8" o.c. if only one brace is required, or may be -nailed to > W both edges of the member if two braces are required. The "T" brace 0 b must extend a minimum of 90% of the member's length. For 2x8 and Cj( 0 larger web members, bracing must be done per building designer, or p,J Z LL 2. A scab (add-on) of the same size and structural grade as the member CL may be nailed to one face of the member with 10d common or box nails at 8" o.c. if only one brace is required, or may be nailed to both Co : faces of the member if two braces are required. A minimum of 2x6 lO scabs are required for any member exceeding 14'-0" in length. Scab(s) must extend a minimum of 90% of the members length. 3. Any member requiring more than two braces must use perpendicular bracing or a combination of scabs and "T" braces, or any other approved method, as specified and approved by the building: designer. 1. WHAT COMPONENTS MAKE UP AN ANSUL SPA -50 SYSTEM? 0 Nearly every industry, large and small, experiences some type of fire every year. Most start out small and are quickly extinguished. But many occur in high hazard, difficult -to -protect areas. These are not quickly extinguished! They may involve flammable liquids, grease and gases; wood and paper; energized electrical equip- ment; or maybe all three classes of fire. A fire may start when no one is around — after hours. Then what? The result is all too often a disastrous fire which spreads to other areas, other machines, offices, equipment, other buildings. Pro- duction is disrupted, jobs lost, people injured — maybe very seriously. A destructive and costly waste that could have been prevented. For over 40 years, Ansul has been preventing this kind of waste. From pioneering the modern-day dry chemical fire extinguisher to innovations in all major areas of fire protection, Ansul has gained world-wide respect as a leader in the field. And our new SPA -50 Industrial Fire Suppression System follows in that tradition. It is a complete, automatic detection, control and fire suppression system that can be installed in more fire hazards using fewer nozzles than any system of its kind. The SPA -50 is a pre-engineered system divided into three compo- nent groups. 1. Electronic Detection and Control. This group consists of an AUTOPULSE Control Panel which is connected to the detec- tors to automatically perform system actuation and any desired control functions such as alarms, door closures or ventilation shut down. The control panel provides circuit supervision and emergency battery back-up making the SPA -50 a completely automatic, 24 -hour -a -day system. Op- tional fuse link detection is also available. 2. Agent Storage Tank and Actuator. Fifty pounds (22.6 kg) of Ansul FORAY dry chemical is stored at 360 p.s.i. (2481 kPa) at 70 °F (21 °C) in an ASME and DOT approved pressure vessel manufactured by Ansul. The actuator atop the tank valve releases the dry chemical agent upon an electric signal from the control panel. 3. Agent Distribution Network — Ansul FORAY is a free-flowing dry chemical. When released from the storage tank, it flows through the piping, out of the special nozzles and onto the fire. Other optional methods of actuation are available including manual/electric and pull station with pneumatic cartridge. • • • WHAT ARE THE METHODS OF APPLICATION? There are three basic application methods for dry "chemical piped systems: total flooding, local application — tankside, and local application — overhead. Hazard characteristics will determine which method is most appropriate. F --. I fJ 1. Total Flooding. Total flooding is based on the concept of "volume protection" and involves dispersion of dry chemical throughout the enclosed volume, creating an atmosphere which inhibits combustion. This method is used when the hazard is entirely enclosed within a room or building. It is well suited for such hazards as storage, fabrication, or mix- ing rooms, ovens and duct work of'up to 3,000 cu. ft. (84.9 M ) 2. Local Application Overhead. Local Application — overhead is based on "area protection" where the dry chemical is applied to specific hazard areas from nozzles ti mounted overhead. The hazard may be located in a large room or building where total flooding application is inap- propriate. Overhead application is especially effective on such hazards as dip tanks, drain boards, quench tanks, pipe coating, manufacturing equipment and wax coaters of up to 80 sq.l ft. (7.4 m2). 3. Local Application — Tankside. Local Application — .tankside is also based on "area protection" but the dry chemical is applied in a horizontal direction over the fire sur- face. The nozzles are mounted above the liquid surface to minimize liquid splashing and to cover the complete surface of the tank. Tankside application is used for such hazards as dip tanks, drain boards, quench tanks or floor areas under machinery of up to 120 sq. ft. (11.1 m2). Application Method Ansul SPA -50 Fire Suppression Capability 1 Nozzle ' 2 Nozzles 4 Nozzles Total Flooding 1,728 cu. ft. 2,400 cu. ft. 3,000 cu. ft. (48.9 m3) (67.9 m3) (84.9 m3) Local — Overhead — 60 sq. ft. 80 sq. ft. (5.5 m2) (7.4 m2) Local — Tankside — 100 sq. ft. 120 sq. ft. - (9.3 m ) (11.1 m2) a WHY CHOOSE ANSUL? The Ansul SPA -50 System uses Ansul FORAY — a multi-purpose, dry chemical agent designed for use on nearly all fires involving flammable liquids and gases, wood and paper and energized elec- trical equipment. This means the system can be used on nearly all hazards found in an industrial setting. Here are just a sampl- ing of the applications: Spray Booths Flow Coat Machines Generator Sets Dip Tanks and Drain Boards Solvent Cleaning Tanks Pump Sets Drying Areas Printing Machines Asphalt Saturators Ovens Quench Tanks Paper Manufacturing Conveyor System Oil Catch Pits Wiring Insulation Flammable Liquid Storage Rooms Mixing Tanks Wood Finishing Operations Dry Cleaning Process Equipment Engine Test Cells Transformers and many others Quench Tank Pump/Compressor Room Solvent Cleaning Tank Flammable Liquid Storage Paint Spray Booth r HOW DOES THE SYSTEM OPERATE? The drawing below illustrates a typical hazard area. In this -exam- ple, a paint storage room is protected by an Ansul SPA -50 System t employing a fixed temperature detector. This particular hazard has an area of 3,000 cu. ft. (84.9 m3) requiring total flooding pro- tection with 4 nozzles. Integral to the protection is the single I zone control panel with accessory door closure operation. 1 Detectors sense fire and send signal to AUTOPULSE Control Unit. 2 AUTOPU system. Mr. Anthony Ortega 4518 Industrial Avenue Simi Valley, CA 93063 go -RE: A.P. #24-27-16 Dear Mr. Ortega: URAL VVEAL f AIBEAUTY OFFICE OF THE COUNTY COUNSEL ADMINISTRATION CENTER 25 COUNTY CENTER DRIVE OROVILLE, CALIFORNIA 95965-3381 TELEPHONE: (916) 534.4621 September 4, 1986 It has been brought to our attention by Mr. Jim Glander, Chief Building Inspector for the Butte County Public Works Department, that you are converting portions of a warehouse to an auto body and auto painting shop on your property, more properly described as Assessor Parcel No. 24-.27-16. Section 26-1 of the Butte County Code states that the County has adopted the 1979 Edition of the Uniform Building Code. The Uniform Building Code requires that all persons constructing buildings within the County of Butte, except for agricultural buildings, are required to obtain a permit from the County Building Department. Section 26-6 of the Butte County Code states that: "It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to erect, construct, alter, repair, move, remove, improve, convert, demolish or equip any building or structure in the unincorporated areas of the County or to cause the same to be done contrary to or in violation of any of the provisions of this chapter. "The use or occupancy of any building in violation of any of the provisions of this chapter is hereby declared to be a public nuisance and may be abated in a manner provided by law." Mr. Anthony Ortega Page 2. September 4, 1986 Section 1-7 of the Butte County Code provides that any violation of any provision of the Code constitutes a misdemeanor, or in the discretion of the District Attorney, be charged as an infraction.
