1806.8 Designs Employing Lateral B ring.
1806.8.1 General. Construction employing posts or poles as
columns embedded in earth or embedde J in concrete footings in
the earth may be used to resist both axigl and lateral loads. The
depth to resist lateral loads shall be detdrmined by means of the
design criteria established herein or other methods approved by
the building official.
1806.8.2 Design criteria.
1806.8.2.1 Nonconstrained. The following formula may be
used in determining the depth of embedment required to resist lat-
eral loads where no constraint is provided at the ground surface,
such as rigid floor or rigid ground surface pavement.
d= 2 (1 + 1+ 4'A h I (6-1)
WHERE:
A _ 2.34P
S,b
b = diameter of round post or footing or diagonal dimension
of square post or footing, feet (m).
d = depth of embedment in eartli in feet (m) but not over
12 feet (3658 mm) for purposed of computing lateral pres-
sure.
h = distance in feet (m) from g'ound surface to point of
application of "P."
P = applied lateral force in pouns (kN).

1806.8.2.3 Vertical load. The resistance to vertical loads is de-
termined by the allowable soil -bearing pressure set forth in Table
18-1-A.
1806.8.3 Backfill. The backfill in the annular space around col-
umns not embedded in poured footings shall be by one of the fol-
lowing methods:
1. Backfill shall be of concrete with an ultimate strength of
2,000 pounds per square inch (13.79 MPa) at 28 days. The hole
shall not be less than 4 inches (102 mm) larger than the diameter of
the column at its bottom or 4 inches (102 mm) larger than the diag-
onal'dimension of a square or rectangular column.
2. Backfill shall be of clean sand. The sand shall be thoroughly
compacted by tamping in layers not more than 8 inches (203 mm)
in depth.
1806.8.4 Limitations. The design procedure outlined in this
section shall be subject to the following limitations:
The frictional resistance for retaining walls and slabs on silts
and clays shall be limited to one half of the normal force imposed
on the soil by the weight of the footing or slab.
Posts embedded in earth shall not be used to provide lateral sup-
port for structural or nonstructural materials such as plaster, ma-
sonry or concrete unless bracing is provided that develops the
limited deflection required.
1806.9 Grillage Footings. When grillage footings of structural
steel shapes are used on soils, they shall be completely embedded
in concrete with at least 6 inches (152 rum) on the bottom and at
least 4 inches (102 mm) at all other points.

GENERAL ASSUMPTIONS FOR MICROLLAM" LVL
• Values shown throughout this brochure are applicable to products
used in dry service conditions only.
• Lateral support is required at all bearing points and along compression
edge at intervals of 24" on -center or closer.
• Use specific gravity of 0.5 when designing connections.
• Bearing lengths are based on MicrollamO LVL's Dearing stress of 750 psi.
• Microllamn LVL beams are made without cambet; therefore, in addition to
complying with the deflection limits of the applicable building code, other
considerations, such as long term deflection unci& sustained loads (including
creep), ponding (positive drainage is essential) and aesthetics, must be evaluated.
• All members 7114" and less in depth are restricted to a maximum deflection
of '116".
1.9E
IJ--a7LC7►'/ I:
• Roof members must either be sloped for drainage or designed to account
for load and deflection as specified in the applicable building code.
• Tables on pages 4-7 include reductions applied in accordance with:
1997 UBC 1607, 1999 BOCA NBC 1606, 1999 SBC 1604 and 2000 IBC
1607 for floor live load; 1997 UBC 1607, 1999 BOCA NBC 1607, 1999
SBC 1604 and 2000 IBC 1607 for roof live load in non -snow (125%)
conditions.
• 311z" members are two pieces of 1314" Microllamo' LVL.
5114" members are three pieces of 1314" Microllarno LVL.
1314" x 16" and 1314" x 18" beams are to be used in multiple
member units only.
See page 17 for multiple member beam connections.

HOW TO USE THESE TABLES
1. Determine the total load on the beam or header in pounds per lineal foot (plf).
2. Locate under SPAN a span that meets or exceeds the required beam span
(center -to -center of bearing.
3. Scan from left to right within the SPAN row until you find a cell where the
maximum TOTAL LOAD meets or exceeds the required loads. For stiffer
deflection criteria, use the L/240 values. In cells where DEFLECTION LOAD is
not listed, TOTAL LOAD will control.
4. The dimensions of the beam are shown at the top of the column of the
selected cell.
5. If the selected beam is too deep or the MIN. END/INT. BEARING length is
too long, continue scanning to the right to find a wider beam that may
require less depth and less bearing length.

Re: Wayne Birkholtz new re50ence APN-025-240-083
Wayne Birkholtz owner/builder has installed 51mp5on threaded rod anchors with
epoxy to his existing foundation. One row of rods are for an interior braced wall
line and another Single threaded rod was installed at the garage footing. These
threaded rod anchors are A307 %2" diameter x 7" Ig. and are anchored in place
by "51mp5on fast cure epoxy" (Refer. ICBO approval #ER -4945) with 4" minimum
embedment length. Allowable ten5ion loads are 3730#. Allowable shear loads
are 1870#. Upon my review, I found the in5tallation to be per manufacturers
5pecification5 and therefore structurally adequate for the loads imposed.
If you have any que5tion5 regardincg these changes please feel free to call me at

Pendent sprinkler in accordance with Bulletin 143 or 151
and Caution Sheet CA -70.
5. Install sprinklers after ceiling is in place.
3. Never apply pail it arid/or other coatir ig to sprinkler or cot i-
cealed sprinkler cover plate.
7. Do not install concealed sprinklers in ceilings which have
positive pressure in the space above, and do not cover the
cup vent holes. An open plenum space must be above the
sprinkler cup.
g. Use a Model RC1 Wrench, (Fig. 1) to install sprinklers. Face
of sprinkler fitting to ceiling dimension is shown on Fig. 3 or
Fig. 4. Ceiling hole diameter is 2 s
g. Final adjustment of each cover can be made by hand turn-
ing the cover plate in the clockwise direction until it is tight
against the ceiling.
10, Never install the Model F1/RES CCP Concealed Residen-
tial Sprinkler in areas where ceiling temperatures exceed

Description
The Model F1/RES CCP Concealed Residential Sprinkler is a UL
listed residential sprinkler intended to be installed in the wet pipe I
sprinkler systems of one and two family dwellings and mobile
homes, in residential occupancies up to four stories in height or in the
resideniini porliotis of any cx,cupancy per NFPA 13D, 1311 or 13.
The Deflector of the Model F1/RES 18 is marked "Pend.", "Res.
Sprkr' "F1/RES/18;' 155°F and "K=3.9", The frame wrench boss is
marked "Basco' and "F 1 3.9".
The push on cover plate assembly is labeled "Basco 135°F (57°C))
Model CCP cover plate - - - - for use with Reliable Model F1/RES 18
3.9 K orifice, 1550F sprinkler only'.
Installation
Apply a Teflon"' based thread sealant to the sprinkler threads only.
The Model RC1 Wrench is then used to engage the sprig) ler
wrenching surfaces to install the sprinkler in the fitting. A 2 ae di-
ameter hole cut into the ceiling allows the sprinkler to be properly
covered by the push on cover plate. Push the cover plate assem-
bly by hand into the cup. Final adjustment, if required, is made by
turning the cover plate clockwise until the cover plate flange is in
contact with the ceiling surface. The Model F1/RES 18 Sprinkler is
only to be installed with 135°F rated Model CCP Concealed Cover
Plate Assemblies.
Use care to avoid damaging the sprinklers before, during and after
installation. Replace all sprinklers which have any sign of damage.
The temperature rating of residential sprinklers is stamped on the
deflector. The sprinkler orifice size is determined by the "K" Factor
which is marked on the sprinkler.
Reliable authorized plated and painted Model F1/RES Spprinklers
are distinguished by the bronze pipe cap insert. When ceiling'tem-
peratures are in doubt, measure with an accurate thermometer.
Refer to NFPA 13, 13D, 13R and Reliable product Bulletin 141 for
further installation details and for specific approval information.
