Dear Jim:
The building 'inspector in the Richvale area has brought
to my attention that the above building is in a question—
able adobe soil area. I appreciate his concern and
propose the following:
Mr. Gil Stuenkel of Modern Steel Structures has informed
me that the continuous perimeter -footing is 6" into
existing grade and the bearing footings are 12" into
existing grade and that a 4" thick gravel mat was placed
under the slab which makes the finish floor a minimum
of 8" above grade. This results in a perimeter footing
of 11-2" thickness. I feel if we place one #4 continuous
bar 3" off of the bottom and an additional #4 continuous
bar 3" below the finish floor that we would greatly reduce
the possibility of separation should any cracking occur.
I also feel it very important to place the footing and slab
concrete in one continuous pour and to be sure the welded
wire fabric called for is pulled up into the concrete.
Of course, there are no guarantees against cracking in any
concrete slab, but if the items mentioned above are adheared
to, along with the fact that the actual loads are very small,
I feel the possibility of excessive cracking and separating
of the'concrete is greatly reduced.
