I 'SLAB�ON GRADE IN CLAY AREAS If slab on grade construction is desired in the clay lots, special foundation treatment will be required. This special founda- tion treatment is shown on the attached drawing.It will be noted that with this design, footings are continuous around the entire structure and are carried to a minimum depth of 18 inches below the lowest surrounding grade. The foundation is/0-inch minimum width and the foundation is reinforced with one #4 bar top and bottom. Vertical steel is also included in the foundation and extends into the slab. The slab is reinforced with 03 steel spaced at 18 inches on center or with mesh 6 x 6 - 10 x 10. All slabs are underlaid by at least 6 -inches of crushed rock or gravel and the clay soils should be gat urated'-to'moisture-content'ap'ecified•for the particular clay soil. This moisture content should be uniform to a minimum depth of 2 -feet. The specified moisture content will be determined by the -Soils Engineer. The saturation of the clay soils can,be obtained by either flooding or sprinkling the site before any foundations are installed or by placing the foundation wall then flooding the site and then placing the slab. It is important that the moisture content of the clay soil be as specified immediately prior to the placing of the slab on.,grade. Tests should be conducted by the Soils Engineers at this time. An•undisturbed sample of the.clay was obtained at this time. The sample was allowed to consolidate under a load of 0.3 tons per square foot and water was added and the sample was allowed to swell. No swelling occurred because the clay was in a saturated condition. Another sample of the sample clay was allowed to air dry and the volume change was measured.. The total volume change from saturated to air dry was 36.0 percent. Based on the test performed, the clay soils need to be saturated to a uniform moisture content between 25 and'31. percent.
