The soil described above was sampled for expansion index testing. The test result was an EI = 83. The UBC classifies this soil as having a "Medium" potential for expansion. The Butte County Building Department typically requires recommendations for mitigating the effects of soil expansion if the EI exceeds 20. There are several solutions that will eliminate or reduce the potentially deleterious effects of . expansive soils. Slabs on grade and pavements are particularly sensitive to swell and shrinkage of the soils subgrade. A list of options is provided below: 1. Remove all expansive materials and replace with non -expansive fills. 2. Modify the existing soils with a chemical treatment (lime, gypsum, concrete, etc.). 0 Use a raised floor foundation, (similar to the foundation proposed for the mobile) with deepened stem -walls, engineered as grade beams capable of spanning 4'0" voids or swells, or with the bottom of footing placed beneath the expansive materials.' Design any slabs to resist movements .ie., post -tension_ slab, waffle slabs, or other reinforcing methods. The four options listed above are riot intended' to, exclude other engineered solutions. The completed engineering may include more than one of the several options. Options 1 & 2 are intended to eliminate soil expansion. Options 3 & 4 are intended to resist the effects of the soil expansion. The best solutions are obviously 1 & 2, but they may not be feasible from an economic standpoint. - Options 3 & 4 -have been providedas options to reduce but not eliminate damage to structures.
