It is my understanding from the sketch, that the hole in this beam is approximately 1" in diameter.' It is located 4-1/2 inches from the face of the support, at a height of 3-1/4 inches above the bottom of the beam. Per your sketch, the clear span appears to be 21 feet 9 inches which corresponds to the 22 foot 6 inch outside to outside dimension shown on the plans. This beam supports half the weight of the second floor roof, the weight of a second f loor wall and half the weight of the second floor. The plans indicate that the roof is to have architectural composition shingles. A rough calculation of the load on this beam indicates that it is approximately 900 pounds per foot. Because of the hole's proximity to the support, the only potential failure for consideration, is shear failure. The building code allows loads within the depth of the beam from the face of the support to be ignored. This results in a design shear force of about 8800 pounds. This translates into a required cross-sectional area of 80 square inches. Subtracting the hole leaves an actual cross-sectional area of 87-1/8 square inches. I have reviewed that plans and sketches that you furnished me with respect to the 1" hole drilled in the 5-1/8 x 18 inch GluLam Beam. It is my understanding from the sketch, that the hole in this beam is approximately 1" in diameter. It is located 4-1/2 inches from the face of the support, at a height of 3-1/4 inches above the bottom of the beam. Per your sketch, the clear span appears to be 21 feet 9 inches which corresponds to the 22 foot 6 inch outside to outside dimension shown on the plans. This beam supports half the weight of the second floor roof, the weight of a second floor wall and half the weight of the second floor. The plans indicate that the roof is to have architectural composition shingles. A rough calculation of the load on this beam indicates that it is approximately 900 pounds per foot. Because of the hole's proximity to the support, the only potential failure for consideration, is' shear failure.
