The water line -trench is directly against the footing and extends below the bottom of the footing a couple of inches. In my opinion, this is not a serious condition that threatens the integrity of the structure, but as mentioned above, it is not allowed by code. Therefor, I recommend that the following measures be implemented by the contractor in order to rectify the condition and satisfy the intent of the code: w 1. _Backfill around the water pipe with sand. The sand should 'be placed to a`depth of at least two -inches above the bottom of the adjacent --footing. The sand can be jetted so that all voids around the pipe are filled. --- -- 2. Native Native material can be used for the remainder of the backfill. The native material shall be moistened and compacted into place using a mechanical tamping device to achieve a density of 90% or greater. With higher rating on new insulations, it is extremely important to bear volt loss in mind, otherwise some very unsatisfactory problems are likely to be encountered. The actual conductor used must also meet the other sizing re- quirements such as full load current, ambient temperature, number in a raceway, etc. How to figure volt loss. Multiply distance (length in feet of one wire) by the current (ex- pressed in amperes) by the figure shown in table for the kind of current and the size of wire to be used. Then, put a decimal point in front of the last 6 digits -you have the volt loss to be expected on that circuit. Example -No. 6 copper wire in 180 feet of iron conduit -3 phase, 40 amp. load at 80% power factor. Multiply feet by amperes: 180 x 40 = 7200 Multiply this number by number from table for No. 6 wire three-phase I at 80% power factor: 7200 x 745 = 5364000 Place decimal point 6 places to left. I This gives volt loss to be expected: 5.364 volts (For a 240 volt circuit the % voltage drop is 240 x 100 or 2.23%). These Tables take into consideration reactance on ac circuits as well as resistance of the wire. Remember on short runs to check to see that the size and type of wire indicated has sufficient ampere capacity. How to select size of wire. Multiply distance (length in feet of one wire) by the current (ex- pressed in amperes). Divide that figure into the permissible volt loss multiplied • by ,. . 1,000,000. Look under the column applying to the type of current and power factor for the figure nearest, but not above your result -you have the size of wire needed. ' Example -Copper in 180 feet of iron conduit -3 phase, 40 amp. load at 80% power factor -volt loss from local code equals 5.5 volts. Multiply feet by amperes: 180 x 40 = 7200 Divide permissible volt loss multiplied by 1,000,000 by this number: 5.5 x 1,000,000 7200 = 764. Select number from Table, three-phase at 80% power factor, that is I nearest but not greater than 764. This number is 745 which indicates the size of wire needed: No. 6. For line to neutral voltage prop on a 3 phase system, divide the three phase value by 1.73. For line to neutral voltage drop on a single phase system, divide single phase value by 2. Open Wiring. The volt loss for open wiring installations depends on the separation between conductors. The volt loss is approximately equal to that for conductors in non-magnetic conduit. I Section 310-15 offers a method to calculate conductor ampacity. Instairlation in Conduit, Cable or Raceway. NEC Tables 310-16 through 310-19 give allowable ampacities (cur- rent -carrying capacities) for not more than three conductors in a conduit, cable, or raceway. Specifically, I checked a portion of the perimeter footing that had been undermined by a water line trench, a condition that is not allowed by the Uniform Building Code. The water line trench is directly against the footing and extends below the bottom of the footing a couple of inches. In my opinion, this is not a serious condition that threatens the integrity of the structure, but as mentioned above, it is not allowed by code. Therefor, I recommend that the following measures be implemented by the contractor in order to rectify the condition and satisfy the intent of the code: 1. . Backfill around the water pipe with sand. The sand should be placed to a depth of at least two inches above the bottom of the adjacent footing. The sand can be jetted so that all voids around the pipe are filled. 2. Native material can be used for the remainder of the backfill. The native material shall be moistened and compacted into place using a mechanical tamping device to achieve a density of 90% or greater. In lieu of compaction tests the backfill procedure may be performed under the direction of a Registered Civil Engineer or Soils Engineer.
