Chico, CA 95926 Attn: Mr. Don Adams Gentlemen: On 12 May 1989 we performed an investigation of soil conditions for a mobile home site at 4501 Dayton West Road. The owners of the mobile home installation are Bill and Sharon Anderson. The purpose of our investigation was to determine the type of soil at the site, evaluate its potential for expansiveness and to make recommendations'to mitigate any expansive characteristics. Upon arrival at the site, several open excavations for utilities and septic service were observed. These excavations extended to a depth of +/-5.0 feet below surrounding original ground. It was noted in these excavations that the upper +/-2,5 feet of soil consisted of dark adobe -like soil. Underlying the adobe soil was a strata of tan, somewhat granular soil. The tan granular soil extended to the depth of the excavations. . The dark adobe soil exhibited highly expansive characteristics, as evidenced by extensive drying cracks in the sidewalls of the trenches, as well as in clumps of this soil which had been removed from the trenches. No evidence of expansive characteristics were observable in'the tan granular underlying soil. The area directly beneath the mobile home had been excavated to a depth of about 18" below the surrounding original ground level. Investigation pits were excavated by hand adjacent to the north side and the east side of the mobile home. At approximately 12" below the excavated surface of the building pad, the tan granular soil was encountered in both pits. The observed soil strata in the test pits conformed to the strata observed in the utility trenches. A sample of the underlying tan soil was obtained and returned to our laboratory for testing. A Washed Grading Analysis and Plasticity Index performed on the tan soil classified it as Clayey Sandy Silt. An Expansion Index Test was not performed on this soil, but it is our professional'judgement that its potential for expansion is low. Allowable soil bearing pressure on this soil can safely be taken as 1000 psf.
