NOV 9 1987 Oroville, CaufQM14 Archaeological Reconnaissance of the Proposed Dennis Ryan Land Split, near Durham, Butte County, California. (AP #40-15-80) Prepared For: Dennis Ryan P.O. Box 5441 Marysville, California 95901 Prepared By Jensen & Associates Archaeofiogical Consulting and Research 41 5kymount8in Circle Chico, California 95928 28 October 1987 a _1 Introduction In order to assess the archaeological Impacts of a proposed land split involving approximately 5 acres of land located tear Durham; Outtt County, California, the owner contracted for an on -foo( reconnais,5 i11Co of the parcel in compliance with recommendations received from Wo Northeast California Information Center and the Butte County Planning hpartment. Accordingly, on Tuesday, October 27, 1987, the author conducted an on -foot reconnaissance of the project area for the purpose of 1008king and recording any evidence of prehistoric or significant historic use and/or occupation. The 5 -acre parcel (A..P.040-15-80) consists of a roughly rectangular piece of land located approximately 1 mile east of Bu'tte. Creek, adjacent to Lott Road, within a cultivated almond orchard. The current proposal *ails for a four-way land split with further development for general residential use. In view of the potential effects of these future construction activities to cultural resources which might exist within the area, and in view of the general archaeological sensitivity of th,, region,, Butte County and Other regulations required that cultural resources be fully invoritoried '-d formally assessed prior to project approval, pursuant to Section 106 of Brie National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as aMdOnd (16 U.S.C, 470), ,and procedures of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (6 CFP 800). This report details the results of the required archaeological survey and inventory and provides aplea•opriatd recommendations, All fieldwork Procedures followed quid0l' Ies provided by the stato Historic Preservation Office (Sacramento) „ old are in conformity with accepted professional standards. 2 Records Search Prior to going into the field the archaeological records of the North000l California Information Center (CSU—Chico) were exai°riined for any existing recorded prehistoric or significant historic sites within the project area, In addition, the National Register of Historic Places (USDI 1987) was also consulted. No sites are currently recorded for the project area or immediately adjacent lands. Fieldwork As noted, fieldwork for the project was condwted by the author on October 27, 1987. The on—foot survey involved criss—crossing the orchard from north to south, examining the surface for evidence of past use and occupation. Numerous ground squirrel and other rodents' burrows have exposed subsurface areas throughout the parcel; and these were Inspected for evidence of buried cultural material. Survey Results and Recommendation No evidence of prehistoric or of early historic use or 'occupation was encountered within the project area. in View of the negative results achieved during both the records search and the field survey; archaeological clearance for the proposed land split is recommended. General Provision Should future construction activity reveal evidence of subsurface prehistoric or historic material, a qualified archaeologist should be contacted immediately in order to assess 'the impacts of the project to the cultural resources involved, t 3 _ Reference Cited United States Department of the Interior 1985 National Register of Historic Places. Some nominal amounts of disruptions, displacements, compaclion, or ovo covering of the soil will occur: as a result of this t;enttative parcel map. The tentative parcel map divides a 2 acre parcel into two parcels which will allow for an additional single family roo Ldential, dwelling, thus only minor impacts will occur in relati, onah.ip to overcovering_and compaction of the soil. lc: The proposed subdivision is within an existing almond orchard, which is relatively flat. Very little grading will by n000daary for preparation of building pads and driveways. Very li.ttlo Change is expected in the topography or ground surface relief features. Ig: The on-site soils are designated as Class I for agricultural use. The two acre parcel is not in itself viable fo'- commercial agricultural food ctionan chis property subsequently been subdivided to provide p P P Y g . 3b: No impacts are anticipated in drainage patterns or the rate and amount of surface runoff. This acreage has been subdivided in the past and, therefore, has received the necessary drainage improvements to accommodate single family dwellings at one acre densities. No new drainage facilities will be necessary to accommodate the additional lot which would be created by this subdivision. 4a_,d: The removal of almond trees w111 occur on the additional lot to allow for a future single family residential home. without this subdivision more trees could be maintained within, the general neighbor;huad: 8 The proposed tentative parcel map would conform to other tentative mops along the Lott Road corridor within the SR -1 zoning, The General. ?l an designation for this property is Agricultural Resident.*1 and the pjap also conforms with such designations. This propertly was si,.bdivided in August of 1987 by Dennis and Leslie Ryan. At that time, they had created four lots: This proposed subdivision will create one more lot on the original Dennis and Leslie Ryan parcel map. Such an addition would generate approximately 10 extra vehicle trips per day. The most recent traffic Counts on. Lott Road show an average daily traffic (A.b,T.) of 810 vehicles.
