Dear Sir: Mr. Donald Brasheaxs, of Hardesty & Sons, Inc., informed me on ,lune 15 of a problem which their firm had encountered, and asked for my advice. Hardesty & Sons had applied exterior cladding to a home in the.following manner. The home had wood sheathing over the framework. Hardesty & Sons applied one layer of build- ing paper. -over -the wood sheathing. The men involved did not know that two layers of building paper were required, nor why two layers were required. I believe that; they acted in good. faith. Hardesty then installed one -inch -thick panels of tongue - and --groove styrofoam over the layer of building paper. Stucco netting then was attached over the inch -thick panes of styro- foam, followed by a somewhat elastic type.finish called one -coat. The project was stopped, and remains stopped, because only one layer of asphalt -treated building paper had been installed over.the wood sheathing. I know that well, because a plastering contractor from Belmont, California, named Halvard Heggstad, and I worked so hard during the early -to -mid 1970 s to persuade the California Lathing and plastering Contractors Association (the CLPCA) to accept, and then.support,our belief that two layers of asphalt -saturated felt or.asphalt-treated building paper should be applied over wood sheathing.
