Dear Sirs,
With reference to the above subject and your letter dated April 10, 1996, building permits were not
required for single family residences and duplexes in the unincorporated areas of Butte County until
February of 1962.
Prior to that date, no permits, inspections or approvals were necessary on those buildings,' except for
sewage disposal requirements of the Butte County Health Department.
Tax appraisal records indicate that the original dwelling consisted of 1,106 square feet, was a two
bedroom - one bath, and was constructed in 1936. We have no building permit records for an addition
at the above address but it is possible that it was constructed prior to building permit requirements.
It is also possible that you. might obtain additional information from tax appraisal records..

I have recently inspected a house located at 9M Midway in Durham, CA. Can you help me
determine if a permit was needed at the time that a room was added to the main structure? The
craftsmanship of construction is good, so it appears to be built by an individual skilled in the
building trades. The floor joists are 2x6 on 16" centers, supported by beams resting on posts and
piers. The floor is 1x4 fir flooring over 1x6 diagonal underlayment. There is no plumbing in the
addition. The windows are singled glazed with wood sash. The siding is wood that has been
covered with vinyl siding. There are two layers of roofing; one layer of wood shingle, and on layer
of asphalt composition shingles. Each roof appears to be at least 25 years old, so I am guessing that
the addition was done around 1946. The addition is sound, and there is no sign of rot, decay, or
other deterioration. Given this information, do you think a permit was required at the time of
construction? Thank you for your help.

Dear Sirs,
With reference to the above subject and your letter dated March 14, 1996, building permits were not
required for single family residences and duplexes in the unincorporated areas of Butte County until
February of 1962.
Prior to that date, no permits, inspections or approvals were necessary on those buildings, except for
sewage disposal requirements of the Butte County Health Department.
We have no building permit records for an addition at the above address and this was not addressed at
the time the vinyl siding permit was issued, but it is possible that it was constructed prior to building
permit requirements.
It is also possible that you might obtain additional information from tax appraisal records.
For an investigative fee of $46.00 per hour (1/2 hour minimum), a written chronological record of
building permit, code violation, and enforcement activities on a given parcel may be obtained. This
does not include any field inspection time, is informational only, and does not act as a guarantee or
warranty of the current condition of the existing structures.
I have enclosed a very brief summary of building permit activity on the parcel including owners name at
the time each permit was issued, contractor, address, what the permit was for, and date of final.

Dear Sir/Madam:
The property .referenced above was listed for sale through my
office by a residual trustee who does not live in this area and
knows very little about the property.
The house on the property includes an area which does not appear
to be part of the original floor plan. This add-on appears to be
about as old as the original house, however, and seems to be
included in the square footage shown on the tax roles for the
building. Vinyl siding was recently (1992) added.to the house,
including the old add-on in question. A permit was issued for
the vinyl siding, so the status of the add-on may have been
addressed at that time.
I would appreciate you providing me with information to address -.
concerns the buyer may have about the building permits for the
apparent old add-on to the house.

Dear Sir/Madam:
The property referenced above is listed for sale with my office
and is now in escrow. The property consists of a 2 -bedroom house
on a half -acre and is being used as residential property,
although the parcel is zoned M-1.
The buyers of the property plan to continue using the property
for residential purposes ... as their principal residence. During
the course of processing the buyers, loan application to purchase
the property, the lender asked for some assurance that the County
will not object to the owners continuing to use the property for
residential purposes.
I would appreciate your providing me with a letter for their use
confirming that your office has no objection to the proposed use
of the property, and that should the present building burn down
or otherwise be destroyed, the County would have no objection_ to
the owners building a new home on the.property.
