COLIFORU BAGTERIA TEST FOR DRINKING WATER
This coriform- bacteria test is specific for a g7o,,p of bacteria found ip the
anir- ks and humans. as welt as in surface soil- When they are found
intestines; of aa,
in water, they are the result of pollution by sewage or surface water. The test is
not specific fof disease causing bacieFia thernst-1ves, but rather is a test for a
group, of bacteri.- whicty are nearty always present in conjunction with harmful
bacteria. The co!ifarm bacteria are generally considered indicator organisms for
fra;=[contamination-
It this test indicates coliform bacteria to be present in a water supply, it is to
be concluded that the water has been contaminated in some way.. A positive test
does not necessarily indicate that, disease causing bacteria are present, but Only
that the water is polluted and disease is possible.
RESULTS, Ila C-a-lix-farm Bacteria recovered
If your Water is contaminated, it is recommended that you treat your water
supply before further use as drinking water -
Chlorine is Offe Of the best chemicals to kill coliform bacteria. The most
readily available supply of chlorine is a. bleach containing chlorine Such as Purex
or Clorox. TheT fol lowing procedure is suggested:
Pour one gallon of bleach containing chlorine in your well, run
each and every faucet or outlet until you can taste or smell the
chlorine. Then do not use any water for at least twelve hours. The
longer you leave the bleach in the, water the better, several days
if possible. Then run water out of aft the faucets until the taste
e chlorine cart not be detected. Wait at least one Week a -,-I have
the water tested' again. By doing this, YOU Will Know if' the water
has been recontaminated. In areas where wells and septic tank
lines are close together, we recommend that The Well water be
testad every year after the -ny seas -on ex -as.
