Beck, Ph.D. Principal Analyst RV A noise assessment was prepared on 1 & 2 May 1994 for a 1.02 acre lot located on Turntree Court, south of Durham. The Butte County Building Depart- ment noted that the home to be built on this lot must meet the noise require- ments in Chapter 35 -of the Appendix of the Uniform Building Code. The pre- sumed noise source was train traffic on the Southern Pacific Railroad Tracks, east of the Midway. A site inspection was carried out on 1 May 1994 to determine the condi- tion of the track, distance to the nearest grade crossing and the presence or absence of any special features. The track in that area is on a raised road bed approximately 6 feet above the ground level of the lot. The track bed and ties are in excellent condition. The track is continuously welded and the estimated train speed is approximately 30 miles -per hour, as it approaches Durham. The nearest grade crossing is at Durham Dayton Road, approximately 0.7 miles north of Turntree Lane. Passing trains are not required to use their diesel horns in the vicinity of this site. Motor vehicle traffic on the Midway is relatively light south of Durham. A 25 MPH speed limit sign is less than 0.2 miles to the north at the southern edge of Durham. Automobile and truck traffic volumes are too low for LDN calculations. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development methodology was used for estimates of train noise. The volume of train traffic and length of trains was. established at the peak numbers that occurred in past years, rather than the reduced volumes at present. It was assumed that as economic conditions improve, the number of trains will increase to former levels. the HUD work- sheets used to calculate the day -night noise levels (LDN) are attached. The calculated LDN noise level at the nearest wall of the proposed house will be 64.3 dB. Peak noise events from the passing of loaded freight trains would be 76 to 78 dB, based on actual measurements at a location to the north, along this same track. The unit on Lot 2 will be exposed to a direct line -of -sight sound trans- mission path from the tracks to the house. The tracks are elevated and ground 310 Salem Street, Suite B Chico, CA 95928 916. 345.1342 4 FAX 916. 342.1553 attenuation effects will be minor. The living room, dining room and kitchen occupy the walls facing the tracks. The bedrooms are separated from these rooms by bathrooms and an utility room. The windows on this home will be Viking M8000 vinyl windows with 1/8 -inch lites and a.1/2 -inch air gap. The STC rating of these windows is 32. They will attenuate exterior noise•levels by 38 dB. Exterior walls will have a 1/2 -inch stucco exteriors- over soundboard on 2 X 4 framing. R-13 insulation is recom- mended. The interior walls will be 1/2 -inch gypsum board. These will produce an STC rating of 37 or a noise.attenuatibn capability of 43 dB. The overall attenuation,of'walls and windows will be 40 dB, reducing 'interior noise levels from trains to a LoN level of 24.3 dB, well below the 1991 UBC recommended interior level of 45 dB. Interior design construction will produce an overall STC rating of 57, attenuate noise produced by traffic on the Midway and SP railroad tracks by 63 dB for the sleeping areas of this home.
