For code reasons, it will be necessary to cut these columns at the base, eliminating this "base fixity", and requiring that the lateral thrust issue at the porch roof rafters be resolved by other means. Assuming that the ridge rafter will act as a "beam", we will determine it's allowable span without vertical support. We will then design a steel frame, bolted to each side of the ridge rafter, to provide vertical support to the ridge "beam" element, effectively eliminating the lateral thrust at this location.
