Replaces all previous editions May 17, 2004 County of Butte Building Division 7 County Center Drive Oroville, Ca 95965 APPLIED TESTING CONSULTANTS MATERIALS ENGINEERING TESTING AND INSPECTION Re: Carter Residence, Durham, CA We were employed to provide compaction verification on the engineered fill in the newly constructed building pad for the Carter Residence in Durham, CA. The project consisted of removing all organic and deleterious material from the building pad and- =constructing an import engineered fill (approximately 2 feet at the deep end) which meets County of Butte, UBC, and ASTM requirements. Our technicians found the import material contained in excess of 30% + 3/4 inch material. Per ASTM D1557 section 1.2 and ASTM D4718 section 1.3, we cannot proceed with conventional density testing procedures on this material. Per our agreement with the Butte County Building Department, all engineered fill would have to be monitored during construction to verify that adequate moisture conditioning and compactive efforts were achieved. We monitored grading operations on site from 05-4-04 to 05-6-04. We verified that all areas to receive fill were bearing on firm sable ground prior to any fill placement. All engineered fill was moisture conditioned, placed in 8"-12" loose lifts and compacted with a sheepsfoot compactor. We.were on site for much of the fill operations and were satisfied with the compactive effort throughout the import fill. Based on our experience and witnessing much of the earthwork operations, we certify per Article 3, sections 6735.5 and 6735.6a of the Business and professions Code that the engineered fill was properly moisture conditioned and compacted in accordance with Chapters 18 and 33 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. Applied Testing Consultants is not a licensed surveyor. We do not verify or certify grades or elevations. Test elevations are derived from information provided by the contractor and/or the client. The numbering system below corresponds to said notice. 1. 4'-0" shear. wall: The original shear wall design specified 4'-4" along grid C on both sides of the 6'-0" opening. Due to the footing location for the holdown anchors the shear wall currently functions as a 4'-0" shear wall. I have advised the contractor to anchor the (2) 2x6 and (1) 3x6 cripples to the 6x6 post (with the double HD8A's) with (10) 5/8" diameter through bolts equally spaced (4 %2" min. from each end) centered and countersurik into the first 2x6 adjacent to the door opening. In addition, (8) 16d common nails are to be face nailed through the 2x6 cripple adjacent to the opening into the 3x6. The nailing should be in two rows 3" apart and staggered. This nailing coupled with the face nailing already in place will secure the cripple to the 3x6. This attachment will provide adequate shear transfer for uplift from the boundary member adjacent to the doorway to the holdown post. The effective length of the shear wall will be 4'-4". 4. The total shear at grid D is 528 plf (calculation sheet L9, dated 5/3/05). The single row of 10d's at 3" on center, on each stud, accounts for a demand of 264 plf which is less than the 350 plf cut-off for a 3x stud at plywood splices. I have advised the contractor to face nail additional 16d common nails at 8" on center; staggered in two rows (total of 1.2 nails). In addition to the above responses and recommendations to the contractor, I have advised the contractor not to proceed until approval from your department. The project consisted of removing all organic and deleterious material from the building pad and constructing an import engineered fill (approximately 2 feet at the deep end) which meets County of Butte, UBC, and ASTM requirements. Our technicians found the import material contained in excess of 30% + 3/4 inch material. Per ASTM D1557 section 1.2 and ASTM D4718 section 1.3, we cannot proceed with conventional density testing procedures on this material. Per our agreement with the Butte County Building Department, all engineered fill would have to be monitored during construction to verify that adequate moisture conditioning and compactive efforts were achieved. We monitored grading operations on site from 054-04 to 05-6-04. We verified that all areas to receive fill were bearing on firm sable ground prior to any fill placement. All engineered fill was moisture conditioned, placed in 8"-12" loose lifts and compacted with a sheepsfoot compactor. We were on site. for much of the fill operations and were satisfied with the compactive effort throughout the import fill. Based on our experience and witnessing much of the earthwork operations, we certify per Article 3, sections 6735.5 and 6735.6a of the Business and professions Code that the engineered fill was properly moisture conditioned and compacted in accordance with Chapters 18 and 33 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. The project consisted of removing all organic and deleterious material from the building pad and constructing an import engineered fill (approximately 2 feet at the deep end) which meets County of Butte, UBC, and ASTM requirements. Our technicians found the import material contained in excess of 30% + 3/4 inch material. Per ASTM D1557 section 1.2 and ASTM D4718 section 1.3, we cannot proceed with conventional density testing procedures on this material. Per our agreement with . the Butte County Building Department, all engineered fill would have to be monitored during construction to verify that adequate moisture conditioning and compactive efforts were achieved. We monitored grading operations on site from 05-4-04 to 05-6-04. We verified that all areas to receive fill were bearing on firm sable ground prior to any fill placement. All engineered fill was moisture conditioned, placed in 8"-12" loose lifts and compacted with a sheepsfoot compactor. We were on site for much of the fill operations and were satisfied with the compactive effort throughout the import fill. Based on our experience and witnessing much of the earthwork operations, we certify per Article 3, sections 6735.5 and 6735.6a of the Business and professions Code that the engineered fill was properly moisture conditioned and compacted in accordance with Chapters 18 and 33 of the 1997 Uniform Building Code.
