ARGHAEOLO.GICAL SURVEY OF A.P.N. 41-10-37
BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
BY
.TAMES P. MANNING
PROJECT DESCRIOTION The proposed project is to create three 20 acre
parcels on A.P.N. 41710-37, approximately .60.2 acres of land, for' res'identlial
development.
PROJECT LOCATION: The project o tte is located to the east side
iams
Road aproximttel 1.5 miles to tit.. north of the intersection with PentzlRoad
in Butte County. The property covers a portion of the UE 1/4 of Section 20 and
w, the NW 1/4 of Section 21, To 21 N., R. 3 iH%, Hamlih Canyon Quadrangle, 7.51
series.
PROJECT APPLICANT: Robert W. Brown ,
3748 Runaway Road
Oroville, CA '95965
PRIOR DATA REVIEW: Ptplor to conducting the field survey the archaeological
site record filos maintained by the Northwest Information Center of the
California Archaeological Inventory were consulted to determine if any
previously recorded cultural resources were located within, or adjacent to the
project area. Two previously recorded archaeological sl es, CAUT-420 and 429
Were listed as being located within the ptloject area. These sites were both
recorded as naturally formed rockshelters that had been Inhabited by the
prehistoric 11
of the area: Features listed as being identified at the
sites, included bedrock mortars, pestles and lith;c debitage
DATE OF FIELD INSPECTION- June 17; 1986
ENeiVIROMENTAL SETTING: The project site is located in the lower foothills of
Nevada mountains along the eastern edge of the Sacramento Valley at
elevations ranging from 3601 to 1521, The project site is located at the southern
end of Perkins Ridge between Cory' Canyon and Little Dry Creek Canyon; The
p"roperty lie's along either side of the ridge and across the ridge top. Th'e ohly
surface water sources located on the. property are ephemeral: The area supports
an open oak- rassland t g
9 type of ve etation. No structured are located within the
Property area. A dirt road named Old Stage. Road extoNds from the southwest
corner of the property up to and along Perkna Ridge.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY: The focus of the field survey "was a visual inspection
of the ground surface for materials or features Indicative of prehistoric ;or early
historic activity. The survey was accomplished by °walking regularly spaced
linear transects with an approwmate 20 meter interval spacing over the gently
sloping portions of the project site in the east and west and along the ridge
top, The steeper slopes along the edge of the ridge wore lrispected by walking
contour transects with an approximate 30 meter interval spacing. The edge of
the ridge along the upper rim was closely inspected for the presence of
potential rockshelters. The locations listed for CA -BUT -420 and 429 Were
rechecked to insure they were within the project area. Ground visibility was
very good throughout the area due to heavy grazing.
FINDINGS: No materials 6f features indicative of prehistoric or early historic
activity were observed Within the project other than thooe previously recorded.
Old Stage Road was inspected and found to be an old stage road, ruts from the
Wagon wheels were identified in two areas ;of exposed bedrock. No materials or
Z
eatures related to this early activity were noted within the project area. This
stage route appears to have extended from Pentz Road up Perkins Ridge, past
Deadman Spring, to Clark Road in southern Paradise. "
CA -BUT -420 and 429 Were found to be in the locations listed on the
archaeological site maps and within the project boundaries. Both of the
rockshelters are located along the upper rim of the ridge and contained
materials and features related to their occupatloh by the prehistoric population
of the area. Neither of the sites showed signs of having been vandalized and
appear to be undisturbed. Two other overhangs, which could have potentially
been utilized as rockshelters, were located within tha project area. Careful
inspection of both of these areas did not reveal any indications of heving been
occupied.
RECOMMENDATIONSi It is recommended that archaeological clearance be
gl anted for the proposed project site, The proposed project will not impact any
cultutral resources. CA -BUT -420 and 429 are located at the upper edge of r
steep sided "ridge where development or other potentially detrimental activities
can occur. The presence of three new residences within the vicinity of these,
sites will possibly have a beneficial impact, in that, the likelyhood of vandalism
will be decreased. Any additional mitigation measures would be unlikely to
afford these sites additional protection.

A. 'Habitat
The project site is located in typical. Foothill Woodland habitat between

752 feel.-at the top ot
f a butte at the southern boundary in the eastern half, o
Access to the site is via Williams Road, which intersects with Pentz Road
about one fourth mile west of the entrance to .Butte Communi
the ty College; A l
gate toward the north end of Williams Road is located at the southwest cornerofproperty, The gate also is situated, across anold stagecoach road
which
meanders across the site from southwest to northeast, Apart from fences,
evidence of extensive cattle grazing, and the stagecoach road, the area appears
to have been essentially undisturbed for many years.
A few ephemeral streums and seeps drain the site, which was essentially
dry throughout on the date of the field survey, except for a lingering minor
seep
on the stagecoach road toward the top of the butte on the west side.

B, Rare and Endangered Species
Several species, on stato and federal lists of, sensitive or rare and
endangered vascular plants have previously been reported from sites within a few
Miles of this property. Most, howovoll, fare associated with special habitats such as
vernal pools, which are not present at this location. A small; population of one
truly rare plant (robust checker--Sidalceo robusta) was discovered on the west side
of the butte at the foot of the bluffs. Its location (where construction of housing
or roads is not feasible) probably protects it, but disturbance of the habitat. or 4 .
drainage patterns within fifty feet of the population (shown on the accompanying
map) should not be perilAtted at any time
