The property is located approximately 0.5 miles east of Oregon 0=ty, along the West Branch of Potter, Ravine and lies in the E" of the SWI of Section 10, and the NW11 of Section 15, T. 20 N. , R. 4• E., Oroville Quad,, 7.5' series. The proposed project will divide the property into ten. parcels, j The terrain of the property varies from a relatively flat area in the southeastern portion of the propertyi to moderately sloping hillsides that cover the remainder of the property. A dirt road crosses the property in an east- west direction and a power lint; crosses the property in 'a north south direction. .A single family residence and a number of smaller buildings are located in the eastern portion of the property. The vegetation of the property ranged from an open grassland area in the southeastern portion of the property to a dense cover of manzahita, pine, oak and annual grasses iri the northern portion of the property. Prior to the field reconnaissance 1 consulted the archaeological site reoord files maintained at Cal'fornia State University, Chico to determine if any previousl,, recorded archaeological sates were located within the property boundaries. No previously recorded archaeological sites Were located Within the project area, althoughfour archaeological sites had been previously recorded within an area of one mile from the property, The field reconnaissance involved the exarlhation of the entire ground surface of the property for materials of archaeological or historical significance, This was accomplished using regularly spaced linear transects With a :Fifteen meter intervalA Tho presence of mine tailings along the intermittent stream in the Nest Branch of Potter Ravine Were the only indication fouhd of 'mining activities ;in the project area. No additional historic materials were observed during my inspection of the property, Two archaeological sites Wore located and recorded during ,4yy `reconna.issance i an area of sift small bedrock mortars In the . d a small, temporary habitation tsitetin the southeast lcbrnor of Parcea. Tho TO 1016i tl+ 5,61y2 SOCIETY FOR CALIFORNIA ARCHAEOLOGY District 2 Clearinghouse October 7 ► 1979 Page 2 bedrock mortar site lies on a gently sloping hillside in an area of bedrock outcropping and should not be affected by any development taking place in this area. Measurements and, photographs were taken of these mortars and their locations, marked on a topograph map. The -temporary habitation site contains materials and artifacts typical of those used by the aboriginal occupants of this area for processing vegctal, food resources and game. Thesite's area is approximately 100 meters north -south and WO meters east -west with the easternportion of the site area extending outside -the project area onto the adjacent property. The .fence marking the property boundary extends north -south through the site area, which is on top of a low hill. The site area does not appear to be in an area where construction will take place, due to its nearness to the property boundary, but prec ut°•-gryy measures should be taken to prevent the accidental of the site.
