Prepared For: Steven Schuster Chlcoj California Prepared By. Jensen & Associates Archaeological consulting and Research 41 Skymountaln Circle Chlco, Californla 95928 1 introduction In order to assess the archaeological impacts of a proposed subdivision project involving approximately 10 acres of land located in west Chico, Butte County, California, the developor contracted for a records search and on -foot reconnaissance of the parcel in compliaivx With recommendations received from the Northeast California information Center and the County Planning Department, Accordingly, on Saturday; June 19,1988, the outhor Butto cted a pedsstrien survey of the project area for the purpose of locating and recording any evidence of prehistoric or significant h'storic use and/or occupation. The 10-00re parcel consists of a square piece of land bordered on the south b Kenn Avenue, Y edy on the north by an almond orchard, and oil the gest by, ,an existing subdivision of single family residences (see attached Schuster Parcel I.ocatior? Map). The CLrrent proposal calls for subdivision of the parcel into nine single family residents lots. In view of the Potential effects Of future construction to cultural resources which might exist within the area, consideration of the general archaeological sensitivity of the region; Butte Count and other in regulations required that cultural resources be fully inventoried and formally assessed to project approval, pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as as amended (16 U.S.C. 470), and procedures of the Advisory Council on Historic preservation (36 CFR 800), This report details the results of the required archaeological survey and inventory and provides appropriate recommendations, All fieldwork procedures followed guidelines provided by the State Historic Preservation Office (Sacramento) and are in conformity with aat Professional standards, pted. Record Search Prior to going into the field the archaeological records of the Northeast Ca i Information Center (CSU -Chico) were examined for any existing recorded prehistoric or significhht historic sites within the project area, In addition; the National Register P,Ioric acea (11501 1987) was also consulted, No $ites are currently recorded for the projecttarea nor imMadiatelyadjacent lands, Fieldwork As noted, fieldwork for the project was conducted by the author on June 19, 1988. The on-foot survey inQved criss-crossing the'porcel from north to south, examining the surroce for evidence of pest use and occupation. Ground squirrel burrows and recent gardening activities have exposed subsurface areas throughout the parcel, and these Were inspected for evidena sof buried cultural material: Survey Results and Recommendation No evidence of prehistoric or, of early historic use or occupation was encountered within the project area. in view of the negative results achieved during both the records search and the field survey, archaeological clearance for the proposed Schuster subdivision is recommended; with the following general provision: should future construction activity reveal evidence of subsurface prehistoric or historic cultural material, a qualified archaeologist should be mntacted immediately in order to assess the impacts of the project to the cultural resources involved: Reference Cited United States Department of the interior" 1987 National Register of Historic Alaces, Federal Register through June 23,1987, Washington, D.C. —. 1.1, f1,4 le l RAJ 192 0,3 Mi.
