Subj: Soil Classification and In -Place Density Testing
Gentlemen:
In accordance with your request, we have completed a cursory soil
investigation and soil density testing of a residential home pad
south of Skyway Avenue in Chico. The purpose of this investigation
was to classify the soil at the site, assess its load bearing capability
and determine the degree to which the fill had been compacted.
An investigation pit was excavated to a depth of 24 inches at the front
of the pad near the location of the elevator. A sample of the native
soil, taken from 18 to 24 inches below grade, was returned to our lab
for testing. A particle size distribution test was performed in

-40, ASTM t -J17. Material passing the No. 200 seive was 51%.

While we were not present during the construction of this pad, it is
-our opinion that it was constructed adequately. Several pockets—of
$dry oawdew soil were observed, but we do not feel these will'be
detrimental if footings are constructed in accordance with the F
Uniform Building Code and extended into the native undisturbed soil. 'r
Any organic deposits or loose earth observed after footings are exca-
vated should be removed in its entirety and backfilled with compacted
t",granular soil. We would appreciate an opportunity to inspect the
*footing,excavations prior to placing reinforcing steel or forms to
ascertain that no such deposits are present.
