Method B is one of the two possible,options for calculating interior mass at explained in Section 4.2 of the
Residential Manual (RM). The other option, Method A, is a simplified method to take thermal mass credit for
concrete slab -on -grade only. This worksheet is not required for Method A. Method B must be used to take
thermal mass credit for any mass elements other than concrete slab -on -grade.
Calculate the Interior Mass/CFA value using the worksheet space below. Look up the Unit Interior Mass Capacity
(UIMC) for each interior mass surface in RM Tables 4-9a, 4-9b and 4-10 reprinted on the Attachment. Include the

potable water -systems inside of buildings was heard and.discussed.'-.
Martin O'Brien, representing.the Shell Oil Company,.made a very good and complete
report to the Board -regarding the product and its status at State:level including
a brief review.of the California Environmental Quality Act. Summary which is, a.
preliminary environmental -review.*
After considerable -...discussion by individual board.members with Mr. O'Brien.and*
Mr. Makau,,motion was made by Cook, second by McFarren. that the appeal be tabled.
until the.State of California has completed the Environmental -Impact Report. .
Motion carried 5-2,.with Bowles and Graves voting no. -B ' oard members commented -
there are treatment methods availabl,e.to handle corrosive and other -water related
problems affecting water pipes..
2. Request by Glenn Bruno regarding the clear, walking space requirements -of
26" on a spiral stairway for�Stephen Pearce..
.Glenn Bruno explained the events leading up to the,installation of the.spiral
stairway with 21" clear walking space.
After'some discussion, motion by Graves, second by Bowles that the appeal be
granted since ' the narrowness of -t -he stairway does -not constitute a hazard, but
an inconvenience, and the high.cost of corrective action.would not be warranted
in this case.
Motion carried 6-0 with McFarren abstaining -
3. Request.by Doug Timmons regarding the deletion of.two-firewalls on hi&
proposed addition to his repair garage.

Glander described the request and explained Mr. Timmons could not be -at the meeting
because of possible surgery for one of his children.
After some discussion, motion by.Graves, second by McFarren, to deny the appeal.
Motion carried unanimously.
Chairman Chrysler indicated Mr. Timmons could be heard again in the future if he
personally wanted to present his case.
4. Re
. quest by. Dan Cook, on behalf of Louisiana Pacific, for deletion of a
2HR firewall requested by the Division of Fores--try and acceptance of a 44' clear
space in lieu ' of the 60' clear space requirement of the code around the warehouse
addition to the hardboard plant.
The Division of Forestry requested a 2HR firewall between the existing plant and
the warehouse addition to assist them in fig4 ting a fire and for separating the
plant from the warehouse.
The 60" space requirement is a code requir . ements for fire fighting and control of
the spread of fire.
After considerable discussion with.Dan Cook and the representatives from Louisiana
-Pacific, motion by Bowles, second by Graves, -to grant the appeal.
The Board finding for granting the firewall.appeal was the firewall was not really*
required by code.
The Board findings on allowing a 44' open space rather than the 60' open space were
that'the Division of Forestry felt the 44' to be adequate, the overlap of buildings
was only 40' and afire could be fought within close proximity to this area, and
further that the entire plant and adjacent chip storage building were.completely
sprinklered and -had 60' of open space entirely around them.
Motion carried 5-0 with Cook and Chrysler abstaining.
Gene McFarren suggested the Board establish some handout and rules to advise
appellants on the process and how to distribute literature and data to Board'
members through the Department (not individually).
Glander to draft proposal to be reviewed by Chairman and presented to Board.at-next,
meeting for review.
Meeting adjourned'at 5:45 P.M.
