Drawer 1179 Moultrie, Georgia 31776-1179 Phone (912) 985-1312 POWDER COATING GIVES "SOUTHERN CHARM" DURABILITY OR WHY "OLD SOUTH" COLUMNS ARE THE BEST In the pre -Civil War South, pillars were a sign of "wealth.-PoWerf U I- Wooden Columns'supported the roofs over large porches belonging tqplantation industrialists. But years of inclement weather took their toll, slowly rotting the wooden columns and deteriorating their Southern charm. Theonly way to save pillared porches was expen- sive repair work. And, with more homes and buildings across the United States integrating col- umns into their architecture, repair work was on the rise. In 1967, with the development of aluminum col- umns, Southern charm could be incorporated into any design without the consideration of expen- sive future renovation. Pioneering the development of the aluminum col- umn was Moultrie Manufacturing Company, which today is the world's leading manufacturer of quality cast aluminum furniture and now, also of extruded aluminum columns. Bill Smith and his family -built -the -business-f rom-eight- employees making mule drawn plow points in 1952 to the for- ty acre industrial complex it is today. "My son, Bill, Jr., and I even cleared the land and con- structed the buildings ourselves," says Bill, Sr. Customers, including Presidents, movie stars and royalty, have columns shipped worldwide; from Hawaii to England to Australia. Because of the column's longevity, ease of installation and reasonable cost, the demand for them has been increasing rapidly. Two years ago the Japanese came to Moultrie's booth at a trade show in Houston armed with their cameras and micrometers. With the ability to pro- duce so rapidly and abundantly, concern existed that the Japanese would invade the United States column market. Within six months Moultrie Manufacturing Company had received quotations 'for'having, their col u n1ris -produced, in Japan. The Smiths knew it was time to act. When the decision was made to build a new facili- ty for the fabrication of aluminum columns, various painting alternatives were investigated. Powder coating was chosen because it met the three primary objectives established by Bill Smith, Sr. — Environmental compliance, cost effec- tiveness, and outstanding physical performance while achieving excellent aesthetic values. Armstrong Products of Warsaw, Indiana, has assisted Moultrie during the selection of powder coating and the subsequent design of their new powder system, recommending a urethane powder coating as the best choice. Environmental compliance has been accomplish- ed by powder's unique characteristics — no sol- vent content and virtually total utilization of the product — thereby eliminating _atmospheric as well as solid waste disposal problems. Cost effectiveness has been achieved by the abili- ty to accurately control film build while achieving total use of the powder. The powder coating formulated for this applica- tion has excellent outdoor weatherability and physical performance. The chip, scratch, and mar resistance is better than that achieved by virtual- ly all solvent based coatings. This, all three ob- jectives had been reached by the selection of Armstrong's Topcoat powder coating finish. When Bill and his son, Bill, Jr., first laid the groundwork for painting the columns, plans call- ed for an acre of plant floor space; half of which was to be used for a gas fired hot air oven. BGK Finishing Systems, Inc., worked with Bill, Jr., to develop a system that requires just a fraction of that space, which allowed Moultrie to erect a new 80' x 340' building for the sole purpose of finishing the aluminum extrusions and castings. The system is completely automatic except for loading and unloading of the large variety of parts. "Instead of half an acre of hot air oven," Bill, Jr., stated; "BGK built us an oven that occupies a space approximately 7 feet wide by 30 feet long and cures powder in only 34 seconds. Cleaning and pretreatment are the first stage of the process and take place in a system fondly referred'to as the "Green Monster". Column extrusions up to 36 feet in length and cast aluminum caps and bases are normally loaded on racks that carry them through a detergent cleaning tank, a running water rinse tank, a paint pretreat tank and a dry off oven. All processing stages of the "Green Monster" are automatic and are controlled by computer. The extrusions are now ready for painting. Basic flow of the product through the powder paint system begins hear the unload station of the pretreatment system where they are transferred to the paint system conveyor. Parts travel through the paint station, High Intensity Infrared Oven, cool down system and then unload area. They are manually unloaded and sent to the packing room for shipment. The powder paint system was manufactured by Nordson Corporation of Amherst, Ohio. This is a dry powder coating application system which con- sists of (6) Model NPE-2A atomizing and fluidiz- ing powder guns operating with high voltage elec- trostatic power supplies for transfer efficiency and wrap effectiveness. The system also includes the Nordson quick col- or change booth, which is fabricated in stainless steel and utilizes latest design concepts in apply- ing and recovering powder which results in material utilization of approximately 99%. The modular, self-contained design of the powder booth minimizes space required for operation and requires neither ductwork nor explosion venting as do conventional devices. The cartridge filter design provides the most effective means of powder recovery. After exiting the paint booth; the parts immediate- ly enter the BGK Finishing Systems, Inc. High In- tensity Infrared cure oven. The cure oven is ap- proximately 30' long and heats the aluminum parts up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit in about 33 seconds (at a 55 FPM line speed). The cure oven is a High Intensity Infrared oven which uses tungsten filament quartz envelope type heating elements. After exiting the cure oven the parts pass under high velocity cascade cooling air in a 50' long cool down tunnel. Upon exiting the cool down tunnel the parts travel into the unload area. Here the parts are manually unloaded, racked and sent to shipping for packing and shipment. "The system has drastically increased our pro: duction," said Bill, Jr., "Before the installation of the new paint system, two persons working eight hours could add a factory -baked finish to 300 pieces of aluminum. Today, the same two per- sons can produce 10,000 pieces, or about 1,500 columns, in that span." The capabilities of the machine are so impressive that it currently runs only foUr"hours"a day. It is so economical to operate that Moultrie can paint its extrusions with the new powder paint for ap- proximately the same cost as the old liquid paint of the mid -sixties. In fact, the Armstrong powder used has such excellent protective qualities that Moultrie now offers a — year warranty on its fac- tory finish. The oven's energy efficiency and labor-saving economy has surpassed the Smith's ' earliest dreams for production. As such, it has allowed a great Southern 'tr'aditio , h. to rise again. The aluminum column has come of age, and its finish won't deteriorate. "By the way," smiled Bill, Sr.; "we've whipped the Japanese at their own game, and we did it with good old-fashioned American know-how. We can actually manufacture factory finished extruded aluminum columns more economically than they can." The above story explains why you have "The best" aluminum columns available. Classic beauty from ancient Greece and Rome; charming tradition from the old South; cost- conscious practicality for today's economics., - low hqaintenance to go with modem living... se of cylindrical, fluted, and square columns in Ameri- can build- ing design began in Colonial days, and their popularity has con- tinued unabated ever since. Today, their classic grace and simplicity offer an appealing alternative to sterile "glass -box" architec- ture. From elegant grand colonnades to inviting porches, col- umns add distinction and individuality in the finest way. Structural columns were perfected both aesthetically and practically by the ancient Greeks and Romans, who actually were bor- rowing and improving on the stylings from the much earlier Egyptians and Persians, among others. In addition to adoption of classical ly-styled columns in modern construction, replacement of older columns as they have deteriorated has created a great demand for columns that are less costly than wood (straight, solid tree -trunks are getting scarcer all the time), more durable (new wood seems to split, warp and decay even faster than did that from 18th -century -trees), and less ex- pensive to transport and install. Restorers of old homes and builders of new ones are happy to discover Old South Columns. Made of long-lasting extruded aluminum, they are available in fluted round and square styles, and may be topped/ with capitals ranging from the simple Doric style to the magnificent Corinthian. Column diameters up to 24 inches and lengths to.30 feet are in stock and ready for immediate shipment from Moultrie, 4Georgia. QUESTIONS WE OFTEN HEAR (and the surprising answers!) Q Aren't columns difficult to install? ANot at all. In fact, lengths up to 12 feet can be installed by one person., using ordinary hand tools. Longer lengths require an assistant and adequate scaf- folding for safety during installation. QHow do I know what diameter of column will look right? AArchitects have complex formulas for figuring this, but the basic rule of thumb is one inch of diameter for each foot of height. We also suggest that for buildings set back more than 300 feet from the road, you go one size larger, as columns viewed from this distance tend to look somewhat slenderer. QCan Old South Columns be Installed around existing metal posts? AYes, the column can be snapped around an existing post, but be sure to order split cap and base. QDo Old South Columns need painting? AThe factory -baked finish on Old South Columns is the most durable we could offer. It needs no painting at all upon installation. Also available is a factory - applied primer finish that requires only a brush -applied coat of quality exterior house paint for easy matching to the rest of the trim. QAluminum columns do look fine, but can't you tell they're metal by tapping on them? AYes, but if this bothers you, just fill the hollow columns with vermiculite (very inexpensive), up to about seven feet or so. This deadens the sound of the tap, so it sounds very much like solid wood. QThe vertical lines between the staves will be visible, won't they? AThese joints are visible when the columns are assembled, but are easily caulked before painting so they won't. show even on close inspection. Of course, if the lines don't bother you, caulking isn't necessary. QHow does the cost of aluminum columns compare with wooden'ones? AThere are some variables, but generally the cost of a'high quality wooden column (redwood or equivalent) with mortised and locked joints for maxi- mum permanence will be about three times the cost of Old South Columns of aluminum. Less expensive wooden columns will require maintenance and/or re- placement within a few years. And,' of course, no wood is as durable as aluminum! QWhen are split caps and split bases necessary? AOnly when columns are used to go around an existing post. (Standard caps and standard bases will be deducted from the cost and split caps and split bases added.) .OLD SOUTH COLUMNS 'JDIMENSIONS AND LOAD DATA DIMENSIONS IN INCHES COLUMN A B C D No. STANDARD APPROX.
