Dear Mr. Glanders:
Bill Morris has asked me to review a substitute exterior wall
coating for homes in the su�`division off Guynn Avenue in Chico. The
exterior wall was originally recommended for 3/8 inch gypsum
under the surface stucco coat. Mr. Morris provided me with a Western
Electro -Acoustic Laboratory, Inc. -,laboratory test report on the
substitute material. The composite�exterior wall covering tested was
a 1/2 inch thick Powerwall stucco system. This system consists of an
expanded (1.5 pound per cubic foot) polystyrene layer attached to
wall studs covered with a fiberglass reinforced cementous stucco
app ' lied on a 20 gauge galvanized netting base with 1 inch spaces.
The wall perimeter was sealed with a silicon caulk on all edges. the
test wall ' contained insulation with a value of R-11', rather than the
slightly thicker R-13 used by Mr. Mo'rris.
The laboratory tests conformed to the provisions and require-
ments, of ASTM Procedure E90-8 ' 1. No significant changes have been
made in t ' his procedure in our edition, E90-85, and we assume that
the tests are still valid -The ASTMIstandard E104Z-85 classifies
this coating as a Type I mix intended for application over a support
system for attachment. This material must be mixed according to the
the manufacturer's specifications.
Tests results showed sound attenuation loses of 50 dB or greater
for frequencies above 800 cycle per second (CPS) with lower
frequency attenuati_qn,s_of_Z4_dB at 124 cps to 45 dB at 500 cps. '�T__h-e`�
