RESULTS AND RrCOMM HND. TIONS the intensive on -foot survey resulted in recorcli.ng a single aboriginal, bedrock milling station which was designated site Sk llem IPI. The site consists of ,a single andcsitic bedrock outcrop on lxwere c3 two , y shallow mortar cupsThemortarswere situated close to natural spring, at which some nnn-significant (contemporary) has:or c debris had also accumulated. However, a thorough examination of the entire area around the mortar cups and the spring failed to reveal any evidence of more intensive abor— iginal occupation and no evidence of s gni ican't historic use or occupation.. Since the present project resulted in a oompl.ote re- cording of the aboriginal, mortars, and since: no Ovidence of more intensive or more substantial aboriginal occupation a o eeists at this sate, archaeoloaical clearance for the ..Proposed Surface historic or prehistoric cultural materials b any sub- subdivision ro ect.xs recommended. Habifat. Rutin 'cavy, The project site is located on parcels of land that contain 016ments of three types of plant .communities- foothill vmodldh, cit chaparral olid riparian. Butte Creek drains the area from northeast %c;, southwest. The terrain rises sharply from the creek floor, which 4,.js an eievalidn oto approximately 550 feet, on both sides to approximately 1600 fe0t,Hrv1+ 1xor,5,r cliff, faces exposed g 'ler streains, mostly of of intermediate and higher elevations. :Several srr►at an ephemeral nature, also drain the area. Humbug Road follows the creek floor and serves as the main artery for vehicular traffic through the site. 'In addition there are several dirt roads, notably Doe Mill Road toward the west ern boundary of the property, and another unnamed road that winds for two; miles from Humbug Road to Doe Mill Road in the, central and western portion --- of thf, property, Several wrailers and dwellings dire located on the property in the: vicinity of Butte Creek. Some cattle grids and rock fences ate found in the Central portion, but disturbance of the habitat, other than pips of rock tailings alongside the creek, appears to have been minimal in fact, parts appear to have been left untouched for at least a few decades Foothill Woodland: This habitat is dominated by blue oaks and digger pines 4 interspersed along grassy slopes, Live oak, and several shrubb)t species also occur in his habitat, which is indistinct from _'the chaparral with which -it intergrades. Remnants of spring annuals togel-her With ;seedlings of the same annuals were present on the dates of the sur'v`y+r include various clovers, `ThesQ valley Tassels, Hooker's pldnta ns, lotuses, and woods such as big heronbills and red -stemmed filarees: 'Perei r ldl siiec:ies in dvidehce included blue dicks,, many4lowered_brodiaeae grass nuts, Cdliforn a soaproot, wild oniahs, wild a , ' buckwheat, twining .brodiaea, goldback fern and bird's tacit fern.. 1 -;2 ChaQ anal; The characteristic flora of this habitat, which on the project site thoroughly intergrr4des with the foothill woodland, includes many shrubby specios ' such as `buckbrush, toyorF, Md' nxanita, scrub oak, #Iematis, pasd'a aal , f ee, berry and bucklhortf. California bay is sr:cittered within this habitaf and also extendkup into the other habitats. Other woody species include white alder, western sycamore, Oregon ash, spicebush +and Yedbud. Most of file peri:nnial riparian flora was not apparent on the dates of the survey, but several ferns, including chain fern, Calitarnia polypody, California me idenhair and coirimon _ horsetails were evident in several areas with isolated Populations of greenbrier American dogwood and wild blackberry in others. Remnants of annuals such as common monkey flowers are evident in seepage areas. B, Rare and Endangered SpecIds of Vascular Plants. Four species of vascular plants included in either the inventory of the IN ornia Native Plant Soeiety or the U S. Governnicrt's 5mitic;onian 'Insiitut bn list have been reported from the general vicinity of the project site in the past. None was actually 6bserved during the survey, but this does not preclude ihe CC°. possibility of their presence, for the following reasons: The steep bluffs on The east side of Butte Creep (indicated ori the accompanyi p ng msip) are a prime site for, Butta f6tilla6a (Fri tjllar atedstwoodiae), Much occurs in similar adjacent areds. It was too early in the sadWh fn observe this :specleb in flower at this location; indeed, seasonal growth has barely'baetc 'b4tiated at t known sites near the Covered $ridge. However, the species might hili have been j identified from the previous season's growth had it not been for the rmature of the terrain, which is so steep and covered with dense brush as to be virhXlly inaccess- y "' `- future this articular area is to without some mechanical clearing. If ire iry i p ibis w 3. be developed an onsite check for Butte fritillaria should be imade during the mid-siring season. Other spocies that Gould occult on tlae ,prajco sito in cit e. l3idwell':s 4 weed (Pol gonum bidwellI e) robust checker (Sidalcea robusta) and Ausi'in's ►'ock cress (Amis breweri var. a_ustinae). Bidwell's knotweed usually occurs on arid, exposed slopes where there is thin soil overlying lava cap. This pare Ocular habitat certainly does not occur with any frequency in this site, but the possibility that a smallsample of such a site does exist in the central par- tioh where it may have been hidden from view cannot be ruled out,, However, the plant "surveyor believes the ,probability of this is not very high. Pu5bust checker has recently been reported From the edge of a bluff adjacent to the Skyway which runs paraliel to and east of Humbug road outside the project 1 site. It is presumed that if this species does occur on the site it probably would be on the steep bluffs just to the east of the suspected location :of Butte fr tillaria. If development of this particular portion of the site IM Cn- v1sioned in the future, an onsite check 'for this species should be made during the late spring, although no previous "reports for this plant on the project site are on file. Austin's rock cress is usually cohfined'to the crevices of cliffs and large rock faces. No remgants of this "species wove observed during the survey.
