Box 767 - Lotus, CA 95651 26 October, 1986 Mr.'K. Reimers 1929 Garden Avenue Durham, CA 95938 Re: Reinera et al Land Division for property east of Cohasset Road on the Butte-Tehama County line (California Department of Real Estate File No 022082 SO-FOO). Dear ;Mr. Reimers The purpose this letter is to inform you of recent changes concerning the taxonomy and distribution of the Butte County Mdddowfoan (Limnanthos floccosa aubsp cal 1ornica), a state listed Endangered species, and to explain the implications for the property on the Butte-Tehama county line. This information aas recently made avdlable by researchers At University of California, Davis. it is based upon several years of data. gathering and technical ant, lysis. As you may recall„ 'the meadowfoam group, which consists of eight species, is of considerable interest because cif its potential for development as an agrlcultural. crop. Meadowfa;lm fruits are rich in a- high quality oil, Thede 'researchda are very interested in the Butte county Neadowfoam because it is self-pollinating, a characteristic highly desired for some agricultural crops. i The nese data that pertains to your p-:operty concerns the identity of one meadowfoam species occurring in the Butte-Tahama _ county area, the Limhanthea floccosa. This information shoWs Limnanthes fl'occosa is represented in the $utterTehama county Y area by two aubspescies rather than one as previously believed. Submpecies caliyornicn, the Butte Caunty Meadowfoam, is highly restricted, and exttdm6ly rare and 'endangered according to the California Department of Fish & Game. SUbspeciet floccosa, the Woolly Mead6wfoam' is more widespread than subspecies Sall-i;ornica, and currently is not considered 'endangered. The research result, from U:C. Davis provide concrete methods to distinguish thtise two subspecies and show that each is aaAociatdd with ihtermitt6ht drainages from different t.ypeb of grasslands The 8U+-td County Meadowfoam is associated tVAth d,ra.inagda on productive, deep, +alluvial soils (e.g. Redf3ing oils) . The Woolly Meadowfoam occurs on lows-producti'.Pity, thnner volcanic $oils (e.g. T66mes and Tuscan soils) in Butte-- Te hama utte-Tehama county area. 1 Based upon this new information we can conclude that the Butte County Meadowfoam does root occur on the Reimers at al proporty referenced above. The meadowfodx population occurring on the Reimera:et al property is the Woolly Meadowfoam. Therefore, the conclusion in pry original report {Rare Plant Inventory ReQori, Public Repe'_ti Reimers et sl Land Division- California Deon_tjm9nt of Real Estate File No. 022032 SO-FOO) concerning the potential for significant adverse impact to rare and endangered plant species needs to be changed. No potential to impact the rare and endangered Butte County Meadowfoam, as d result of aubdividing the property on the Butte-Tehamt: county line, exists. These conclusions indicate some additional het, changes can be made regarding the existing Preservation Easement established_ during 1.984 to mitigate potential, impacts to Butte County headowfoam habitrat it is clear tat no further need or use exists for this easement. Note that Itea Number 9 on the easement states it shall terminate if the results of a botanical survey show this rare species does not occur on the property. I am not certain of how to interpret the statements. it may be possible that by submitting this letter report the easement is terminated and ho further filings with the county are required. I caution you thc►t this is juat my interpretation of wording in the easement, I could bewrong. Also note that, the California Native 'Plant Society is riot in any way involved.. It is ) y y tact Mary Meyer of the Mt. Lassen therefore not necessary to can Chapter president in Chico.
