" Sanctrcly. c _ Tom Stucimbrand PE ye Sv o_ F NPIregistrution x17497 r I .. r• ,•I - r NOTICE OF R -VALUE FOR STRAW BALE CONSTRUCTION APPLICABLE STANDARD: AUDIENCE: EFFECTIVE DATE: MATURE OF CHANGE: SUMMARY: Title 24, Part 6; Energy Efficiency Standards for Residential and Nonresidential Buildings Building Officials, Architects, Engineers, Energy Consultants and Contractors Immediate Optiona! The California Enerc,, Commission has received n-ia:,y questions from building officiiis, designers and energy _-on utlants regarding the R-v,for stra: hale walls. Pleasc- use the fo'lowing information when modeling the energy perfo,'mance of straw -bale structures. Assembly Bill 1314 a,_nded the State Bui'diig Standards Coco, (Standards) setting minimum safety sta^dards for baled -straw structures Wi`hin these safety standards are two requirements that affect the R -value of straw bales. They are: 1) moisture content of.the bales must not exceed 20 percent of the total weight of the bale; 2) bales for load bearing cons"iction must have a minimum calculated dry density of 7.0 pounds pE?r cubic foot. You may use either prescriptive o performance methods to comply with the Part 6 (energy efficiency) of the Standards. R-30 must be used for the thermal resistance of the straw bales for an,/ of these compiance approacres; prescriptive, points or computer performance. The bales must be a standard 2'1 -inch %vide and 16 -inch high bale (as described below). In order to receive fu] cred:: for the .:ass properties of the stra,i bales, an approved computer program n ust be used. Several values must be entered into the wall layer characteristics section of these programs to properly ^iodel the straw bales including bale thickness, R -value, density, and specific heat. Additionally, the program will need specifications for the wall's other elements, such as the thickness, density and specific heat of the stucco and plaster. Thickness of Bale This number represents how wide the bale is when it is paced in the wall. In California, most bales are 23 inches wide and 16 inches high, and held together by three strings. That means when the bales are laid flat the wall width will be 23 inches plus the thickness of the surface finishes. Minimum bale thickness is 22 inches. When the bales are laid on -edge, which is sometimes done if the bales. are just used for "in -fill" in a post -and -beam framed house, the bale will be approximately 16 inches wide. The . CALIFORNIA ENERGY COMMISSION 1516 Ninth Stroet • Sacramento CA - 96814 minimum thickness that may be used is 16 inches. The actual thickness of the bales in the wall must be entered into the computer program so that the thermal mass can be calculated accurately. Another size of bale sold outside the state is approximately 18 inches wide when laid flat and is held together by two strings. We do not have data on the performance of this size bale and can currently provide no guidance on how to model its performance. Until testing is complete and verified, no R -value can be claimed for this bale size. Use R-30 for standard (23 inch x 16 inch x length) bales laid fiat (nominal 23 inch wall) or on -edge (nominal 16 inch wall). Testing has shown that the R -value is the same in both orientations due to the higher resistance of heat flo,,v across the grain of the fibers vis-a-vis along the grain. Density Bales The minimurn density of bales for load-bearir;g straw gale wa!Is is 7.0 pounds per cubic. foot. Enter the actua! density, if it is known; e:he;tivise., 7.0 pounds per cubic foo`. is the value that must be used. Specific Heat The 1993 ASHRAE handbook of Fu^damen a,s, I -P Edi`ion, Chapter 36, Tab!e 3, lists a specific heat of 0.32 Btu!ib(F) for cellulo- . Definition of Terms: a) Bales means rectangular compressed blocks of rice straw, bound by polypropylene strings. b) Flakes means slabs of straw removed from an untied bale. Flakes are used to fill small gaps between the ends of stacked bales. c) Laid flat refers to stacking bales so that the sides with the largest cross-section area are' horizontal and the longest dimension of this area is parallel with the wall plane. d) Laid on -edge refers to stacking bales so that the sides with the largest cross-sectional area are vertical and the longest dimension of this area is horizontal and parallel with the wall plane. e) Straw means the dry stems of rice left after the seed heads have been removed. f) Code means the latest edition of the Uniform Building Code. 2. Straw Bales and Construction Guidelines a) Proposed building design must meet the requirements of Section 104.2.8 of the Code to the Building Official's satisfaction. The proposed design must be satisfactory and complywiith the provisions of the Code and the material, method or work offered is for the purpose Intended, at least the equivalent of that prescribed in the Code in suitability, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance', durability, safety and sanitation. Straw bales shall not be used as part of the'load bearing system. It is required that a California State licensed architect or engineer (Civil or Structural) be in responsible charge of the design of the straw bale structure... b) Straw bales shall be made of rice approximately 23"W x 15.5"H x 46"L. C) Bales shall be tied with a minimum of three polypropylene strings, and shall have a minimum dry density of seven (7) pounds per cubic foot. The calculated dry density shall be determined after reducing the actual bale weight by the weight of the moisture content. A minimum of ten percent (10%) of the bales shall be tested. If any are found to have less than the requited density they shall be replaced with acceptable bales and all remaining bales tested., -Any additional bales found to have less than the required density will also be replaced with acceptable bales. 1 The building's designer is to provide evidence of this or the structure is to be of one hour fire resistant construction or be provided with a sprinkler system design installed per NFPA 13D. (d) The architect or engineer of record or an approved representative shall test bales delivered to the project site for compliance with section (c) prior to placement of bales within the wall. The results of testing will be part of the written statement submitted to the Building department as required below. e) All bales shall have less than twenty (20) percent moisture content at the time of the lath inspection. The moisture content shall be measured by an alfalfa moisture meter, or other acceptable instrument, provided at the building site by the building owner. The instrument's probe shall be of sufficient length to reach the center of the bale. A minimum of ten percent (10%) of the bales shall be tested. If any are found to have more than 20% moisture they shall be replaced with acceptable bales and all remaining bales tested. Any additional bale found to have greater than 20% moisture will also be replaced with acceptable bales. Tests will be performed by the architect or engineer of record or an approved representative. The results of testing will be part of the written statement submitted to the Building department as required below. f) Bales shall be laid flat with the vertical joints staggered at each course with a minimum overlap of twelve (12) inches. Vertical joints shall be field tested during placement of bales in the walls. Joints shall be sufficiently tight to prevent the end of a 1"x 4"x 24" board from being pushed more than six (6) inches into the joint. g) Bales shall be positioned to eliminate the continuity of small voids. All voids shall be filled tightly with straw. h) Partial bales shall be tied tightly with three (3) polypropylene strings, inserted at the new bale size prior to cutting the original strings. The new strings shall be tied tight to maintain the original density. i) The bottom course of bales shall be pinned to the foundation with #4 rebar with a minimum of two pins per bale. These pins shall be embedded into the foundation to a depth of not less than seven (7) inches and shall continue vertically halfway into the second course of bales. j) Subsequent courses of bales shall have two rebar pins per bale that extend vertically completely through that course and halfway into the second adjacent course below penetrating a total of two and one half courses. All rebar should be approximately nine (9) inches from the bale ends and centered on the width of the bale. k) A continuous ladder reinforcing (min. #4 rebar) shall be placed horizontally between courses at mid wall height and shall be fastened twice per bale to the twine and to the vertical pins. 1) Install #3 rebar, "staples" formed into a "Ll" shape 18" long with 2 each 6" legs at each comer of each course. The legs shall be driven into the top of each abutting straw bale. m) The straw bale walls shall be securely anchored to all adjacent structural members to sufficiently resist horizontal displacement of the wall due to all loads specified in Chapter 16 of the Code dealing with Structural Forces. Anchors shall be placed at every horizontal joint or one per bale along vertical structural elements and a maximum of twenty four (24) inches on center along horizontal structural elements at the top of the straw bales beginning not more than twelve (12) inches from each end of the wall. n) Rough bucks and or door and window frames shall be stabilized with 5/8" diameter x 12" long wood dowels extended into every adjacent bale or by means of a continuous metal lath, prior to the application of plaster or stucco. 2 o) P) (1) A moisture barrier shall be used between the top of the foundation and the bottom of the bale wall to prevent moisture from migrating through the foundation and contacting the bottom course of bales. This barrier shall consist of one of the following: (A) Cementitious waterproof coating. (B) Type 30 asphalt felt over an asphalt emulsion. (C) Sheet metal flashing, sealed at joints. (D) Another building moisture barrier, as approved by the building official. (2) All penetrations through the moisture barrier, as well as all joints in the barrier, shall be sealed with asphalt, caulking, or an approved sealant. (3) All weather -exposed bale walls shall be protected from water damage. However, non - breathing moisture barriers shall not be used on the upper two-thirds of vertical exterior surfaces of bale walls in order to allow natural transpiration of moisture from the bales. Bale walls shall have special moisture protection provided at all window sills. Unless protected by a roof, the tops of walls shall also be protected. This moisture protection shall consist of a waterproof membrane, such as asphalt -impregnated felt paper, polyethylene sheeting, or other moisture barrier, as approved by the building official, installed in a manner that will prevent water from entering the wall system at window sills or at the top of walls. All tears cuts and joints in the weather resistive barrier shall be sealed with vinyl tape prior to installing the stucco netting or lath. After installing the stucco netting or lath, seal all penetrations of the moisture barrier with a vinyl or other permanent caulking compound. No moisture or vapor barrier shall be installed over the inside face of any straw bale wall. q) Install self furring stucco mesh using.18 gauge galvanized tie wires stitched through the bales and tied to the mesh on both the inside and outside face of the bales. The ties shall be placed at a maximum spacing of 6 inches vertically and 24 inches horizontally. r) Where bales abut other materials, the plaster or stucco shall be reinforced with galvanized expanded metal lath, or an acceptable equivalent, extending a minimum of six (6) inches onto the bales. S) Foundations shall be sized to accommodate the thickness of the bale wall and all loads specified in Chapter 16 of the Code dealing with Structural Forces. Foundations which support bale walls shall extend to an elevation of not less than six inches above adjacent ground at all points. The minimum width of the footing shall be the width of the bale it supports, except that the bales may overhang the exterior edge of the foundation by not more than three Inches to accommodate rigid perimeter insulation. Foundations shall extend a minimum of 12 finches below the surface of natural undisturbed soil, engineered fill, or to the frost line, whichever is greater. t) Building walls shall not exceed one story in height and shall not exceed a height -to width ratio of 5.6:1. The maximum length of unbuttressed wall length shall not exceed twenty feet PY). U) Straw bale suppliers shall provide a certificate indicating bales meet the requirements of section (c ) above and are free of insect or pests. All certified bales shall be adequately marked, tagged, etc. which identify those which have been certified by the supplier. The identification system shall bear the name of the supplier and the date certified. Written certification shall be provided to Butte County Building Division for review and acceptance. 3 3.
