If you cannot use shading devices, the resulting negative points may prevent you from compliance. If your glass area is greater than about 30% of the floor area, or is greater than about 15% of the floor area in any one orientation, you will probably need to reduce it to show compliance under the point system. Since the point system is based on an "average" size house of 1400 square -feet, larger houses may not fare as well. under this method because of the relationship between their surface area and volume. For houses larger than about 2000 square feet, you should consider using the computer performance method rather than the point system. When a proposed measure goes below the values in a point table (i.e., is a more negative number), you must use the computer performance method. You cannot use the point system for electric resistance space heating. Unusual design features often require use of the computer method, which offers even more flexibility than the point system.
