Schools in Area 2 milesto Cohasset School: 8r ; INTRODUCTION This repod details the results of an archaeological survey ofa two-way land split propwied by G. and G. Famish of Chico, California. The project involves approximately 10 acres of ]anti Xomted about ? miles north-northeast of the Cohasset Forest Fire Station on Musty Buck Ridge dear the headwaters of Mud Creek, within unincorporated lands of Butte County. Further development for residential use; including home, road, and other construction activities, will follow approval from Butte County of the proposed land split. According to State and County definitions, the project constitutes an "undertaking" which ' could adversely affect cultural resources which might be located within the area of potential effect (APE). Accordingly, a.cultural resources inventory coupled with an assessment. of the National Register eligibility status of any recorded sites, as well as a review of potential project impacts and a list of mitigative measures, is required pursuant to Butte County requirements, and in compliance with Section 106 of the National hIistoric Preservation Act of 1961), as amended (16 U.S.C. 470), and Procedures of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (36 CFR 800). The remainder of this report details the resultsof the archaeological survey and provides a professional assessment of the cultural resources which might be affectcd by the project. All. fieldwork procedures followed guidelines provided by the Stat6 Historic Preservation Office (Sacramento) and are in conformity with accepted professional standar' Location The fairish parcel consists ofapproximately 10 acres ofland located within a portion of the quarter of ,loh 24 North, Range h Fuel, California ( 979), 7 5Series Quad. Thept" ] occupies ethal Y. tom- mate center of Musty Buck: , Ridge, above and c. 1/4 mile east of the West Branch of Mud Cf, uk, near the bradwaters of the Middle Branch of this safe stream. The confluence of the West, Middle and East Branches of Mud, Creek is located c. 2 miles south of the Parrish Parcel. Records Scatch and Project Context Prior to going into the Feld the ari.''.acolog ical records maintained by the Northeast California Information Centt:r at Chico wmvo ,xamined for any existing recorded prehistoric or historic sites. In addition, the National Reg'i'ster of flistorle Places was also consulted (USM 1987). No sites were found to be recorded within the proposed subdivision property, although the general archaeological sensitivity of the area was indicated by the Presence of several prehistoric sites already recorded within the general project vicinity, and by the presence of the intermittent drainages of the Mud Creek system. None of the, previously recorded sites will be affected by rhe Parrish project, hoWevet, As regards ethnographic affiliation, the project area is located within the northernmost, territory. of the. Kookow, or Northwestern Maidu Indians (Riddell 1978. Figure 1), very near the border separating th6 Kenkow from the Yana to the north (Johnson 1978Both of these groups utilized a wide variety of site types during the course of seasonal movements throughout their'terdtorlal range. For the present project area, the expected range of prehistoric site types included the following# (1) aboriginal middens associated with house pit depressions and other V. . ._. .. :.,. .. . .. ,.. , .... .'.... .(... ... :.. ..., r., ......x.. ....,. _ _ urface fcatures located on flats or benr"' — d' nt'to permanent or semi-permanent water purces; (2) .surface Scatters of lith c artifacts and debitage resulting from short-term occupation nd/or specialized economic activities; (3) bedrock milling stations, including both mortar holes and metate slicks; (4) petroglyphs; (5) rock walls and, other lock features; and (6) isolated finds of ,aboriginal artifacts and flakes. 'Ilstoric activities within the general proJect vicinity have been dominated by logging, and it was exoccted that evidence of this activity, spanning the lastl'Oq years, would represent the must ll,kelyhisu;ric feature types to be encouritered within the Parrish pareet.. f1eldwork fieldwork for.' .–.'present project, was undertaken on August 16, 1989 by the author. 'Vegetation is dominated by a relatively mature mixed coniferous forest, including White and Douglas Fir, Cedar, Ponderosa Pine, with scattered oak and a variety of brush species, imiluding metmanita and Ceanothus, Needle duff and deadfall obscured the ground surface visibility, Within ,about 20% of the parcelalthough, periodiCr removal of the duff allowed areas most likely to contain cultural resources to be adequately inspected. Disturbance to the property is:moderate, as an access road has been bulldozed along the western side of the propety, and 'a large clearing suitable for t,,I'istruction of a residence has been bulldozed near the center of the parcel. The entire project area was examined by walking 4 parallel transects cast -to -west across the parcel, maintaining transect spacing at approximately 35 meters. PROJECT FINDINOS Prehistoric Resources: No evidence ofp rehistoric use or occupation was observed within the 10 acre Parrish ,property. These findings were not totally unexpected in terms of the distance of the property from a, permanent water source: Early Historic. Resources: No evidence of early historic, use or occupation was encountered within the project area, ConteniporaM. Fitments: Evidence of contemporary use and activities was observed in the form of existing graded access roads, contemporary trash 'items, a bulldozed residence clearing, and minor evidetice of p,,,dvlous logging activities None of this material represents significant or potentially significant cultural resources, and none was recorded I RECOMMENDATION Based on the negative results achieved during both the records search and field sunt-ey, Archaeological clearance is recommended for the Parrishs' proposed land split, with the Coliei'ing general provision: should subsequent construction or development activities expose burie0, t..rtifacts or other evidence of prehistoric or early historic occupation, a qualified archaeologist should be contacted immediately in order to assess the potential impacts of the project to the cultural resources encountered.
