P/1/< Cr�i Z Design Summary The proposed scope of work for this project is as follows; client to add windows to an existing 10' wide covered porch at the rear of the dwelling to allow the porch to be used in all seasons. Note that the roof and half walls are as per the original drawings. The client will only fill in the existing openings with new windows. The plans for the existing structure show that the rear wall of the dwelling is sheathed with 5/8" T-1-11 plywood. The drawings show `braced wall panels' similar to the requirements of the current 1997 UBC. Since the UBC limits roof projections beyond braced walls to 6' total, this structure is not in compliance with the current codes as constructed. It is my contention that the existing structure, while not meeting literally the prescriptive bracing criteria of the current code, exhibits a reasonable level of redundancy and has load paths sufficient to ensure adequate performance in a seismic/wind event. Since the proposed remodel has a trivial effect on the structure, it is my feeling that a conventional shearwall analysis requiring the addition of holdowns, etc. would be unnecessary. I have calculated the seismic loading at line B and presented an analysis of the wall as a `perforated element' as prescribed in APA 157. Since there are only a few small openings in this wall element, I felt that a liberal approach was acceptable. It is also noted that the design engineer provided shear transfer details at the porches (front and back), noted as detail `B" on the approved plans. This detail provides a very `/ clear load path transferring lateral loads from the roof diaphragm to the shear resisting E�� elements along lines A and B.
