Decause of similar topographic, t oolog:ic, and climatic Coll- ditions between these two adilacent areas, data developed ror the "Magalin Reservoir Watershed Limnology and. Orator, Quality Study" (Heifc;rence 2) are applied to the 'porest_ Ranch area. Precipitation falls in the form of rain and :#noxi. Though the snowpacic has been meast, ired as deep as 4 feet, it generally does not remain for any lengthy period of Lima and does not contribute runoff into the Warmer nummaer months. • Precipitation data on the Forest Ranch area have br;en collected At a station 0.5 mile northeast of forest Ranch since 1954. Long-term precipitation data have been collected by the Pacific Gas and electric Company at the De Sabla Reservoir site since 1904 and by the California Division of :forestry at its Magalia Coiiservar on Camp since 1962. 'these data were used by the U. S. Geological Survey in compiling an isohyetal map that was published in 1969. This map shows the precipitation falling on the T.'orest Ranch area as having a mean annual value of about 70 niches. Since 1954 the Forest; Ranch station has averaged 66, inc ee wi ci 1.88 :inches more than Oct De Sabla station. In order to obtain information on Water losses from evapotrans- piro.t .on (tT) from the forest: soils for the Magalia study, a master clima- tological station was in5rtalled. This station was located at and operated by the California Division of Forestry at its conservation camp 3 miles north of rLlgalia. Evapotranspiration is the sum of water transpired to the atmos- phere by vegetation that evaporated from the soil and that evaporated ,froia free water surfaces. These data were developed for the Magalia Reservoir Study (Reference 2) and modified for the Forest Ranch area;. Assuming a per capita water demand of 250 gallons per airy, a family of four would quirk 1,000 Sallons per day of about 365,000 gallons per year. It appears that on an average annual basis, about three times as much water goes to deep percolation on each 5 -acre parcel as would be required by a family of four. however, even though the water is evenly distributed over each parcel., it slowl rates to topogrgphic lows. Therefore, the water is generally available in localized areas, but is not available uniformly throughout the Forest Ranch area. This analysis appears to be substantiated by th.y many Ory wells drilled in the Forest Ranch area. In addition, it should be realized that dtzrinr dr,,year,„ such as thiG oi,e,'there may, be no deep percolation to the shallow. ground water zone and even ,favorably sittiated 'wells will be al References UlCalifornia Department of Water Itesources.
