W. TACOMA, WASHINGTON 98499 I. Subject: Justus Solid Cedar Homes. II. Description: General: The recommendation is limited to one- story wall construction where interlocking type wall elements or timbers are designed to be stacked in the field to form exterior or interior type bearing or nonbearing walls. The structures are not limited in layout or plan dimensions other than as set forth herein. The wall timbers are machined from select, tight knot, Appear- ance Grade, Western red cedar, kiln dried to a moisture content of 12 percent h 2 percent. The timbers are treated with a toxic, water repellent sealer after milling. The nominal 4 by 8 -inch tim- bers are provided with a double tongue detail in the top edge and a matching double groove detail on the bottom edge. The tongue and groove details are centered on the narrow edges of the timbers to permit setting in either direction. Both upper edges of the tim- bers are rounded 74 inch. The ends of each timber are notched with an interlocking detail which splices them longitudinally with the next timber and develops a weathertight joint. The timbers when set have a net height of 7 inches. Intersecting walls have a milled dovetail joint for each timber which provides an interlocking system without the use of fasteners. The wall being interrupted has a trapezoidal shaped tongue ma- chined on the end of each timber, which is dropped into a match- ing groove extending 1% inches into the continuous wall timbers. The trapezoidal shape of the dovetail resists separation of the two walls and also provides a longitudinal racking shear resistance to each wall. In addition to the tongue and groove detail, the inter- secting walls have their horizontal joints staggered one-half of a timber whereby each timber engages two timbers in the wall intersected and provides additional rigidity. See Erection below for method of laying. The following wall loads are permitted provided the construction and details comply with this report: Axial Wall Load 1000 pounds per linear foot of wall Transverse Wall Load 20 pounds per square foot of wall surface Racking Shear Load 225 pounds per linear foot of solid wall, having a height -width ratio of one The allowable values are not subject to an increase for duration of load. Erection: The wall timbers are designed to be set in the field by stacking after the first course has been connected to the supporting wood floor construction. The longitudinal or eave-line sidewalls of the structures are started with full' depth wall timbers to the re- quired building layout. Three -eighths -inch diameter spikes, 12 inches long are driven in predrilled holes in the timbers at not to exceed 4 feet on center. Additional spikes are driven at door jambs, wall intersections and at stub walls where required to resist lateral wind or seismic forces. Building end walls and interior walls inter- secting the longitudinal walls are started with timbers having one- half the depth of the regular wall timbers. The dovetail joints are assembled with the longitudinal walls before any spikes are driven into place. Full depth wall timbers are then used to bring up all of the walls at the same time, assembling each dovetail as the indi- vidual timbers are set. When the walls have reached the required height they are beveled or sloped to match the slope of the roof. Slots are cut in the bearing wall tops to receive the roof beams. Window and door openings are formed in the walls by omitting the wall timbers at predetermined places. Door and window frames are factory milled and partially factory assembled due to their use as wind -resisting elements in jamb areas. The adhesive used in the factory assembly process is a resorcinol base adhesive meeting the requirements of U.B.C. Standard No. 25-19. The wall timbers im- mediately above and below window openings and the wall timber immediately above door openings in exterior walls are required to extend unspliced between wall lateral resisting elements either side' of the opening. The minimum length of solid wall between open- ings is 2 feet. Reference is made to the tables included in this report and the accompanying drawing for maximum wall spans between lateral resisting elements. Stub Walls: Where the distances between interior walls exceed the allowable spans of the exterior wall timbers, or the tributary wall lengths permitted by the strength of the window or door jamb members, stub walls are introduced. The stub walls consist of short walls 12, 15 or 18 inches long which dovetail to the inside of the exterior walls and are designed to span vertically between the floor and roof diaphragms. The interior end of each stub wall is cased with a IY2 by 3Y2 -inch net Douglas fir -larch member.'attached to the wall end by means of 1 by 3 -inch Western red cedar trim pieces. The trim is nailed to the Douglas fir -larch member and to the wall timber sides by means of 8 -penny common nails at 6 inches on center, all bearings. All members of the cased end are required to be of one piece of material for the full height of the stub wall. Allowable spacings of stub walls depending upon their height and size are set forth in the tables attached to this report. The number of %-inch spikes required to anchor the stub walls, top and bottom, are also tabulated. Stub walls are required to have a minimum of 12 inches of solid exterior wall each side of the dovetail center line. A 114 -inch diameter continuous bead of an approved construction adhesive is to be applied to each face of the dovetail joint in the exterior wall prior to the setting of the stub wall timbers; and two beads to the ends of the stub wall timbers at the cased end. Care is to be taken that the adhesive is applied immediately before the dovetail joints are assembled to avoid drying out or premature setting. Miscellaneous: Wall timbers may be spliced between resisting elements, depending upon the span involved and the length of splice. Walls classified as "without splices" may only have alternate timbers spliced a maximum distance of 24 inches either side of the resisting element acting as the support. Walls classified as "spliced" may have every third timber spliced anywhere in the wall length, with the total length of splice held to 24 inches minimum and distances between adjacent splices held to 48 inches. Electrical and plumbing installations shall not be embedded within the wall timbers proper, except as follows. Light switch boxes are to be serviced vertically in the door jamb void with the box installed within 6 inches of the jamb. Convenience outlets are installed at 12 inches maximum above the floor line by drilling the wiring hole vertically at the neutral axis of the timbers from the floor upward only. When necessary for other locations, conventional stud construction or furring shall be utilized to cover the installa- tions. Plumbing and electrical work shall comply with the local building department having jurisdiction. Foundations, floor and roof construction shall be designed and detailed for submittal and approval by the local Building Official having jurisdiction. Floor plans showing the location of all walls and openings, together with any required stub walls, shall also be submitted, together with calculations showing the loads involved. Shop quality control of the window and door jamb bonding operations are under an independent supervisory inspection by an approved quality control agency, AA -507. III. The timbers when set have a net height of 7 inches. Intersecting walls have a milled dovetail joint for each timber which provides an interlocking system without the use of fasteners. The wall being interrupted has a trapezoidal shaped tongue ma- chined on the end of each timber, which is dropped into a match- ing groove extending 1% inches into the continuous wall timbers. The trapezoidal shape of the dovetail resists separation of the two walls and also provides a longitudinal racking shear resistance to each wall. In addition to the tongue and groove detail, the inter- secting walls have their horizontal joints staggered one-half of a timber whereby each timber engages two timbers in the wall intersected and provides additional rigidity. Erection: The wall timbers are designed to be set in the field by stacking after the first course has been connected to the supporting wood floor construction. The longitudinal or eave-line sidewalls of the structures are started with full depth wall timbers to the re- quired building layout. Three--ighths-inch diameter spikes, 12 inches long are driven in predrilled holes in the timbers at not to exceed 4 feet on center. Additional spikes are driven at door iambs, wall intersections and at stub walls where required to resist lateral wind or seismic forces. Building end walls and interior walls inter- secting the longitudinal walls are started with timbers having one- half the, depth of the regular wall timbers. The dovetail joints are assembled with the longitudinal walls before any spikes are driven into place. Full depth wall timbers are then used to bring up all of the walls at the same time, assembling each dovetail as the indi- vidual timbers are set. When the walls have reached the required height they are beveled or sloped to match the slope of the roof. Slots are cut in the bearing wall tops to receive the roof beams. Window and door openings are formed in the walls by omitting the wall timbers at predetermined places. Door and window frames are factory milled and partially factory assembled due to their use Report No. 2355P March, 1976 as wind -resisting elements in jamb areas. The adhesive used in the factory assembly process is a resorcinol base adhesive meeting the requirements of U.B.C. Standard No. 25-19. The wall timbers im- mediately above and below window openings and the wall timber immediately above door openings in exterior walls are required to extend unspliced between wall lateral resisting elements either side of the opening. The minimum length of solid wall between open- ings is 2 feet. Reference is made to the tables included in this report and the accompanying drawing for maximum wall spans between lateral resisting elements. Stub Walls: Where the distances between interior walls exceed the allowable spans of the exterior wall timbers, or the tributary wall lengths permitted by the strength of the window or door jamb members, stub walls are introduced. The stub walls consist of short walls 12, 15 or 18 inches long which dovetail to the inside of the exterior walls and are designed to span vertically between the floor and roof diaphragms. The interior end of each stub wall is cased with a 1% by 3Y2 -inch net Douglas fir -larch member attached to the wall end by means of 1 by 3 -inch Western red cedar trim pieces. The trim is nailed to the Douglas fir -larch member and to the wall timber sides by means of 8 -penny common nails at 6 inches on center, all bearings. All members of the cased end are required to be of one piece of material for the full height of the stub wall. Allowable spacings of stub walls depending upon their height and size are set forth in the tables attached to this report. The number of %-inch spikes required to anchor the stub walls, top and bottom, are also tabulated. Stub walls are required to have a minimum of 12 inches of solid exterior wall each side of the dovetail center line. A Y4 -inch diameter continuous bead of an approved construction adhesive is to be applied to each face of the dovetail joint in the exterior wall prior to the setting of the stub wall timbers; and two beads to the ends of the stub wall timbers at the cased end. Care is to be taken that the adhesive is applied immediately before the dovetail joints are assembled to avoid drying out or premature setting. Miscellaneous: Wall timbers may be spliced between resisting elements, depending upon the span involved and the length of splice. Walls classified as "without splices" may only have alternate timbers spliced a maximum distance of 24 inches either side of the resisting element acting as the support. Walls classified as "snliced" may have every third timber spliced anywhere in the wall length. with the total length of splice held to 24 inches minimum and distances between adjacent splices held to 48 inches. Electrical and plumbing installations shall not be embedded within the wall timbers proper, except as follows. Light switch boxes are to be serviced vertically in the door jamb void with the box installed within 6 inches of the jamb. Convenience outlets are installed at 12 inches maximum above the floor line by drilling the .vir➢ng hole vertically at the neutral axis of the timbers from the floor upward only. When necessary for other locations, conventional stud construction or furring shall be utilized to cover the installa- tions. Plumbing and electrical work shall comply with the local building department having jurisdiction. Report No. 2355 In response to your letter of May 20, 1977, the one-story limitation is purely an editorial change. Note that the deleted portion made reference to one-story commercial type structures. The Research Committee has established a ruling that conditions of acceptance for residential construction should be no different from commercial construction insofar as strl. tural requirements are concerned. Your request for recognition of multi -story construction should be considered seriously since it"would be confined to structures where fire resistive construction is not required. Please note that heavy -timber construction and fire -resistive construction are not synonymous. If you choose to request recognition of the multi -story construction in the future, the manner in which vertical and lateral loads are resolved will again be reviewed in detail with particular emphasis on earthquake design. We recommend that you engage a structural engineer versed in seismic design to review your current data and advise what supplementary test data will be required. We would be pleased to work with your consultant at that time. We feel it very important that you engage this type of consultant so that you can be assured that whatever test programs are deemed necessary have been analyzed on your behalf.
