Accordi'ngly., on Saturday, January 26 1985, the author conducted an Intensive, on -foot reconnaissance of the project area for the 'purpose of locating and recording any evidence of prehistoric or significant to use and/or occupation. The 5 acre parcel, owned by Michael Cowan, consists of a rectangular piece of land iocated on both sides of Jordan ,Hill Road on the east side of and: overlooking the West Branch of the Feather River and north of the confluence of Concaw Creek and the West Branch. The current proposal ca'ils for subdivision of the parcel into approximate 2.5 --acre parcels with further homesite development of each. In view of the potential adverse affects of future construction to cultural resources which might exist within the area; Butte County and other regulations required that cultural resources be fully inventoried and formally` assessed prior to project approval, pursuant to Section 106 of th.e National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 , as amended (16 U.S.C. 470),, and procedures of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (3'6 CFR 800). This report details the results of the required archaeological survey and inventory and provides appropriate recommendations. All fieldwork, procedures followed guidelines provided' by the State Historic Preservation Office (Sacramento) and are 'in'Conformity with the highest professional standards. Location The Cowan parcelAs located within a portion of the east half of the southwest quarter, of Section 20, Township 22' North`, Range 4 East, of the U.S.,G.S.' Cherokee, California, 7.5' Series Quad. (1970). Records Search Pr or to going into the field the archaeological records of the Northeast California Information Center (CSU -Chico), were examined for any existing' recorded prehistoric or significant historic sites within the project area. in addition, the National Register of Historic Places was also consulted. No sites are currently recorded for the project area or, immediate,l.y a.djace.nt parcels. Ethnographically the project area falls within territory Which was occupied by the Northwestern Madu, or Konkow Indians (Riddell 978: figure Although the ethnographic data do not identify any -sites within the project area; this information. in combination with the results obtained from previous archaeological surveys Within the region Jensen 1979;` um 1983), suggested that a nber of prehistoric site types could be located CHhR(7KV QUADRA Nc cAt lrORNIA—BUTTS Cc F CALIFORNIA Cowan paxcol: surve F' WATER RESOURCES y _area. 7,5' MINUTS SC Ii% S (fioPOG _ )66.1 132, 30" 626 621 _ 2 140 000 F 623 (PARADISE 1162 500) 1 624 1 1 •1 d \\ T1 i .,+ v ff e 11 ,g, , tll\L '., iwA'H' N.
