Kitch- ens and/or cafeterias and common recreation rooms are available. • Beds, mattresses, pil- lows, and blankets are furnished, but hostelers must supply their own sheet sleeping sack. This lightweight sack, in either a cotton blend or nylon, can be pur- chased through either AYH's National Administrative Offices or your local AYH council. It may also he rented at many hostels. • Many hostels prohibit sleeping bags. • Hostels operate under a self-help system. This meanc that hostelers carry their own gear and are often called upon to lend a hand with small chores or cleaning up. • Check-in time is usually between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Check-out time is normally 10 a.m. Many hostels are closed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., requiring hostelers to vacate the premises. • Storage areas such as lockers or closets for personal' belongings are available at many hos- tels, either free or at a nominal charge. • Alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited on hostel property. • Smoking is restricted to designated areas or it may be prohibited at the manager's discre- tion. • Hostelers are encour- aged to travel under their own steam, i.e. by foot, bicycle, canoe, skis, etc. However, those arriving by auto- mobile or bus are wel- come at most hostels. For a complete list of hos- tel customs, consult the AYH Handbook. Eurailpass and Eurail Youthpass Get unlimited rail travel through Europe with a Eurailpass or Eurail Youthpass. What is Hosteling? Hosteling is a unique and inexpensive way to.travel. Hosteling means staying overnight in simple, low cost hostels while you ex- plore fascinating cities, country backroads, and forest trails anywhere from New England to Cal- ifornia and from Europe to Australia. With an American Youth Hostels member- ship card, over 5,000 hos- tels in 62 countries, in- cluding 275 in the U.S., become your home base for all the travel adven- ture you're looking for. What is a Hostel Like? It's your home away from home where you'll find warm and welcoming ac- commodations at very low cost. A hostel is an inexpen- sive, dormitory -style lodg- ing where members of American Youth Hostels can get to know each other, share their day's experiences, and get a good night's sleep. Hostel prices are much less than most hotels and motels, ranging from $3 to $8 per person per night. What you get is a clean, safe place to sleep. and bathe, with separate quarters for men and women. Special family ac- commodations may be re- served at some facilities. Most hostels also have fully equipped kitchens so you can prepare break- fast and dinner; many have cafeterias. All have common rooms for social- izing. Simplicity is the rule at hostels. Because there is no maid service, over- night guests pitch in on domestic duties. Beds come with mattresses, pil- lows, and blankets, and each traveler brings a sheet sleeping sack (or rents one) to use in place of sheets. Other furnish- ings are simple. One of the delightful aspects of hosteling is that no two hostels look alike. In the U.S., a hostel may be a lighthouse on the California coast, a man- sion in Philadelphia, a dude ranch in the Rockies or a converted lifeguard station on Cape Cod. people of their own and other cultures and to ex- perience the far-flung places of the world. In ef- fect, hosteling has often been the stimulus for self- discovery and interna- tional understanding. Fur- thermore, hosteling has done more to build the self-reliance of mind and body than any classroom could possibly do. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., AYH is a non-profit, non- political, non-sectarian or- Abroad, it may be a castle in Germany or a sailing ship in Sweden. In every case, a hostel's smooth operation is en- sured by its resident man- agers and the cooperative spirit of their guests. As you'll see, there's little wonder why hostels have been called the friendliest places on earth! What is AYH? American Youth Hostels encourages low cost travel by young people and adults through a world- wide system of hostels. "Youth" hostels have been a way of life to world travelers for decades. To many thousands of Amer- ican bicyclists, hikers, ca- noeists, and other tour- ists, inexpensive hostels have meant a great op- portunity to meet the ganization working exclu- sively for the purpose of education through travel. Its membership is open to individuals and families of all ages and to non- profit groups. AYH is supported solely by mem- bership dues, program fees, and tax-deductible contributions. American Youth Hos- tels has provided quality travel and educational ex- periences to Americans since 1934. Today, as we begin our 52nd year, there are over 100,000 active AYH members and 32 local AYH councils. Along with the hos- teling associations of 61 other nations, AYH is af- filiated with the Interna- tional Youth Hostel Fed- eration based in London, England. IYHF represents 4 million hostelers world- wide. Where are the Hostels? You'll find hostels almost everywhere you travel. They are in major cities and in small, quiet towns, in remote mountain areas and near beautiful sun - warmed beaches. Among the more than 5,000 hostels in 62 coun- tries around the world, you'll discover 275 right here in the United States. A map locating the Amer- ican hostels is shown in this brochure. The largest concentra- tions of hostels are in Western and Southern Europe, the United States, Australia/New Zealand, Japan, and Canada. There are also hostels in India, Mexico, South America, Africa, and Asia. The AYH Handbook (free with membership) lists all the U.S. hostels, including their addresses, telephone numbers, booking re- quirements, available ser- vices, and local attrac- tions. European and Mediterranean hostels are listed in the International Handbook, Volume 1, and hostels in the rest of the world are listed in the International Handbook, Volume 2. See your local r,9 AYH council or send for the AYH Travel Store brochure to obtain these publications. Who Uses Hostels? At hostels you will en- counter outgoing people who like meeting others, who enjoy adventure, and who prefer to travel in a simple and inexpensive style. Hostel users are an interesting mix—both Americans and visitors from other countries. They may be bicyclists, backpackers, whitewater rafters, skiers or other outdoor enthusiasts. They may be "just tourists"— perhaps students or sen- ior citizens traveling for a weekend or on an exciting year-long odyssey around the world. No matter what adven- ture they pursue, solo travelers and small groups of friends are fre- quent hostel users. Fami- lies, too, take advantage of the special arrange- ments available at some hostels with advance booking. School, scout- ing, church, and civic or- ganizations also find hos- tels ideal. Most hostels provide affordable group lodging plus meeting and recreation rooms where seminars, workshops, and lectures can be held. All of these travelers know that hostels offer secure overnight accom- modations on a budget and a congenial place to interact with others. Once you stay in hos- tels, you'll find there is no substitute for their con- venience, friendliness, and low prices. Do I Need Reservations? Reservations are often a good idea, especially dur- ing the summer. There- fore, you may wish to re- serve your overnight lodgings before you de- part on a trip, or, as you travel, to make bookings one week or more in ad- vance. If you do not make reservations, beds are assigned on a space - available basis. For hostels in large cities and popular tourist resorts, reservations should be made at least four to six weeks in ad- vance. Before making your booking, please con- sult the AYH Handbook or one of the International Handbooks for a thorough explanation of the three types of reservation for- mats. In these hand- books; each hostel lists whether reservations are essential or advised and what kind of reservation is accepted. Groups and families seeking special accommo- dations should always make reservations as far in advance as possible. I Want to Go Hosteling. How Can I Join AYH? To join AYH, simply fill out the membership ap- plication included in this brochure and mail it with the appropriate fee to the American Youth Hostels National Administrative Offices or to the local AYH council or agency nearest you. However, if you're leav- III. Home Sweet Hostel A Home Hostel is a hostel -like facility in someone's private residence. It is a special dimension in serving AYH's mandate to provide intemational cultu- ral exchange opportunities. For for- eigners, staying at a home hostel represents a "homestay" experience. Normally, a home hostel has all of the basic elements of a hostel. However, there are significant differences between a hostel and a home hostel. First and foremost, home hostels always require advance reservations, either by mail or telephone. Utmost courtesy is essential during the hostel- er's stay. Home hostels are small, normally with 1.8 beds. The cooking area may be the homeowner's private kitchen and, while meals may be pro- vided, the hosteler cannot always expect to be able to cook his or her own meals. Home hostels may accept a limited overnight fee, up to the max- imum summer rate for standard -grade hostels. Home hostels in major urban or tourist areas may not be appropriate due to the potentially high volume of use. IV. Supplemental Accommodaflon's A Supplemental Accommodation is teler,S"can expect to prepare their own a temporary facility available to AYH : fo; a meal service may be offered members until a full-service hostel can ins ead. Finally, the ovemight charge or more of the -basic elements of a _ may be higher than the maximum hostel. Itis "often a hotel, YMCA or allowable AYH hostel rates for the type other, type of lodging where hostel sof. service offered. AYH charters and members may share the use of the lists such facilities on an interim basis building with other users. Typically, where demand for some hostel -type there is no user's kitchen where hos- accommodations is high. V. mere to Locate a N.Mostel AYH is developing plans for the effective and orderly long-range devel- opment of a national network of hos- tels. In general, AYH plans to own or operate hostels in major gateway and destination sites, as anchors of the U.S. hostel network. AYH works with other non-profit organizations and pri- vate individuals, who are supportive of the AYH program, to develop other hostels to fill in the national network. Location in an area of great scenic or historic interest usually means greater use of hostels. If the hostel is in a region frequented by hostelers, or in a chain of hostels, or near an existing AYH organization (such as a council), it will probably receive more use. The AYH National Administrative Offices or an AYH council can help determine whether a potential hostel is in a loca- tion that will ensure use; it is discour- aging to devote time, money, and effort to establish a facility and then find it is not needed or used because of its location. On the other hand, some hostels in out of the way locations can be an important service to a small number of hostelers who want to visit a unique location off the beaten track. Such hostels may serve 100.150 individuals per year, and are typically operated as 10.20 bed simple hostels or home hostels, with minimal staffing and sim- ple furnishings. A hostel's specific location within a community is also critical and could determine the popularity of a particular facility. Ideally a hostel should be within walking distance of necessary services, such as groceries, restaurants, and bike shops. It should be well -served by public transportation, since many hos- telers (especially foreigners) rely on this mode of travel as their main means of transportation. The hostel should be easy to find, with well marked signs for the hosteler arriving on foot or by bicycle. It should be located in a safe neighborhood which is easily accessible to points of recrea- tion and interest. \1/ t/ COUNTY OF BUTTE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS 196 Memorial Way, Chico — Phone: 891-2751 7 County Center Drive, Oroville — Phone: 534-4541 Skyway and Elliott Road, Paradise — Phone: 872-2961, Ext. 57 CORRECTION NOTICE , ✓Ac /e—" t, 3X63 .
