Durability Grumman Sunstream solar systems are designed to provide a long service life with minimal maintenance. Collectors and various mounting configurations are engineered to withstand wind and snow loads as well as other weather conditions. System components are subjected to rigorous quality control tests to assure reliable performance under all anticipated conditions. Grumman5unstream° DESCRIPTION . The Grumman Sunstream collectors are ideal for air or hydronic space heating or domestic hot water applications. They can accommodate many industrial process heat applications as well as selected air conditioning installations, indoor swimming pools and hot tubs. The 100/200 series provides the ability to integrate flat plate solar collectors directly into the roof, thus saving roofing costs. Available in single (100 series) or double glazed (200 series), these collectors are water -tight and available in a backless configuration as well as options pertaining to size, inlet/outlet configuration and frame colors. Surface mount installations on new or existing structures are easily accomplished by use of the low profile 300/400 series collectors providing high thermal efficiency per installed dollar. These collectors are also available in single (300 series) and double glazed (400 series) configurations in two standard sizes: 3' x 7' (91 x 213cm) and 4'x 8' (122 x 244cm). INSTALLATION VERSATILITY All Grumman Sunstream solar collectors may be installed vertically or horizontally. For installations with limited roof space or special layout configurations, the 3' x 7' collector (21ft2) is available in all versions (models 121/221; 321A/421A). The 4' x 8' editions (32ft2) reduce the number of collectors required for a specified area resulting in lower installation costs (models 132/232; 332A/432A). The low profile 300/400 series provides an attractive installation -appearance. The under 4 Ib. /ft2 (19.6kg/m2) weight simplifies handling and, in many cases, reduces' mounting structure requirement. As many as ten collectors may be connected in parallel without external piping due to the combination of a. floating absorber plate and 1" (2.54cm) nominal diameter straight -through header; resultant piping, insulation and installation cost savings could be considerable. Grumman's 100/200 series collectors cut installation costs with features that both simplify and reduce the number of plumbing connections. The 0.96 in. (2.4cm) flange around the entire periphery simplifies installation arrangements and provides suitable tolerance margins for support structures and mullion/flashing designs. RELIABILITY AND MAINTAINABILITY Materials and manufacturing processes of Grumman Sunstream collectors have been selected and designed to provide many years of reliable service. The collector frame is extruded from an aluminum alloy known for its high resistance to corrosion and is available in either clear or bronze anodized finishes. Collector performance has been tested in accordance with ASHRAE 93-77 test procedures by independent test laboratories. . A weather sealing system utilized on all collectors employs mitered and welded frame corners, EPDM rubber gaskets with vulcanized corners, and silicone caulking for pan and insulation areas. This also makes the 100/200 series ideal for integral roof construction. Maintenance is facilitated through a design feature which allows removal and replacement without disconnecting the plumbing connections. Additionally, the 300/400 series has been test certified for wind speeds to 120 mph (193.1 km/hr). OPTIONS' Grumman Sunstream collectors are available in optional configurations to satisfy a wide range of design and performance requirements providing maximum versatility for the specifier. SIZE Collectors can be specified in lengths from 4 ft. (122cm) to 10 6..(304.8cm) and widths from 28.3 in. (71.9cm) to 49.6 in. (126cm) for the 100/200 series and 4 ft. (122cm) to 8 ft. (234cm) and widths from 261/2 in. (67cm) to 471/4 in. (121cm) for 300/400 collectors. Widths for all series, however, are available in increments of 41/4 in. (10.8cm) only. INLET/OUTLET LOCATION The orientation of the.inlet/outlet nipple can be a significant cost factor in collector installations. In addition to the standard "down" position on the 100/200 series and the straight -through header on the 300/400 series, other nipple locations and end fitting options can be provided. BACKLESS CONFIGURATION For in -the -roof installations, the backless option may be most cost effective. This configuration has the standard 100/200 series frame, one or two panes of tempered glass, and Cu-PlankTM absorber plate but the bottom pan and insulation are omitted. This allows specification of any desired insulation thickness while permitting access to, and disassembly of, the absorber plate and fluid system from the building interior. Removal of the collector or the glazing system isnot necessary for plumbing repairs. Conversely, the glazing can be replaced without disrupting the plumbing connections. 'Available in quantities of 50 or more. CF -100A DHW MODULE FOR FREEZING CLIMATES The CF -100A Heat Exchanger Module is designed to simplify closed loop, solar domestic hot water installa- tions. This is accomplished by packaging most of the components required for a domestic hot water system (less tank and collectors) in a light -weight, compact and aesthetically distinctive Module. The CF -100A is ideal for new or retrofit domestic hot water systems where water consumption is approx- imately 150 gallons/day (568 e/day) or less. The Module is compatible with any conventional gas, elec- tric or oil hot water system when used in a two -tank or pre -heat configuration. It may also be used in a one - tank configuration if the tank has an electric heating element located approximately 1/3 of the distance from the top of the tank and if it is a minimum 52 gallon (196.80 size. The Module has a double wall, counter -flow heat transfer system that provides leak detection capability. The Grumman Sunstream Heat Exchanger Module is highly versatile. It provides heat transfer and system control and monitoring capabilities all in the same compact unit. The Module's monitoring function allows the home- owner to check fluid pressure and temperature. The pressure and temperature gauges assist in making trouble -shooting and servicing faster and easier. SOLAR EQUIPMENT OL -100 DHW MODULE FOR NON-FREEZING CLIMATES u The OL -100 Open Loop Module is designed to simplify installation of direct solar domestic water heat- ing systems in warm climates. This is accomplished by packaging most of the operating and control compo- nents (less tank and collectors) in one light -weight, compact and distinctively attractive package. This Module provides an economical, efficient method of heating water in warm climates., It is suitable for use in areas of the United States where the aver- age daily minimum temperature in January is 40°F (4.44°C) or greater and the number of heating degree days does not exceed 500. In marginal areas where freezing occurs frequently, Grumman recommends use of a closed loop system with the Grumman Sunstream CF -100A Counterflow Heat Exchanger Module. Automatic freeze protection is incorporated in the Module. If collector temperature drops to 40°F (4.441C), a sensor at the solar collector signals the controller located in the Module to activate a circulator. Warm water is recirculated through the system, thus prevent- ing collectors and piping from freezing. When a combination of freezing weather and power outage occurs, the system must be manually drained. f The OL Module's temperature gauge allows home- r owners to monitor water temperature. , r The CF -100A and the OL -100 Modules carry both the IAPMO (International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials) and UL listings. 1 8.5 66.9 MODULES DD -100 DHW' MODULE FOR TEMPERATE CLIMATES :2# MP -100 SPACE HEATING OR SPA AND DHW MODULE The Grumman Sunstream DD -100 Module provides an economi-,at, efficient method of heating water in temperate climates. In areas which are sub- jected to frequent sub -freezing temperatures, snow storms, or ice storms, Grumman recommends the use of a closed loop :system with the Grumman Sunstream CF -100A Counterflow Heat Exchanger Module. The DD -100 Module provides automatic freeze protection. If collecto- fluid temperature drops to 45°F, f 2°F, a sensor at the solar collector signals the automatic drain down valve to drain the water in the collector loop. Back-up freeze protection is provided by a freeze snap switch which activates the automatic drain dowr valve and drains the system (collector loop) when the fluid temperature at the bottom of the collector drops to 44°F, f 4°F, or when power is not available to the controller.'The system is reactivated when collector fluid temperature rises to 65°F, t 2°F, or when power is restored to the contrcller. When a combination of freezing weather and power outage occurs, the system is automatica6ly drained and will not be refilled until temperatire and power requirements are satisfied. The DD -100 Module is compatible with any conventional gas, ele--tric or oil hot water system when used in a pre -heat (two tank) configuration. It may also be used in a one -tank configuration if the tank has an electric heating element located approximately +/a of the distance from the top of the `ank and if it is a minimum 52 gallon (196.8) size. The MP -100 Multi -Purpose Module is designed to simplify space heating/ domestic hot water installations. Capabilities include spa heating/ domestic hot water as well as seasonably adjusted swimming pool heating/ domestic hot water systems. The Module is a compact unit containing most all the components required for a space heating/domestic hot water system (less tank(s) and collectors) within an attractive package. The MP -100 is available in the —1 version to accommodate average size single -story homes as well as the —2 version with greater pumping capacity for larger installations. It is compatible with most back-up heating systems; oil or gas-fired hydronic or forced air as well as heat pump systems. For domestic hot water heating the Module incorporates a double-wall, counterflow heat transfer system with leak detection and provides maximum efficiency. The.drain-back design of the collector loop provides increased system performance• at reduced cost. Monitoring and control of the system is provided by a control panel located on the face of the Module. The homeowner can tell at a glance when heat is being absorbed by the solar collectors and/o: being transferred for space heating and domestic hot water use. Each of these three functions operates automatically. Collector loop temperatures may be monitored by means of the pressure and temperature gauge. Grumman_ unsrtream° DOUBLE WALL VENTED HEAT EXCHANGERS C Grumman Sunstream double wall, multi -tube, (DMT) vented heat exchangers offer the engineer and system designer highly efficient, compact, liquid -to -liquid heat transfer over a broad capacity range. They are excep- tionally well suited for solar domestic hot water applica- tions assuring the highest form of protective separation between domestic hot water and solar loop fluids. Externally vented passages allow for positive leak detection. PERFORMANCE The Grumman Sunstream double wall vented heat exchangers are the counterflow type for high heat transfer per dollar of investment. They are available in seven basic sizes, nominally from 6,000 Btu/hr (1,510 Kcal/hr) to 65,000 Btu/hr (16,380 Kcal/hr) and may be installed in multiples for higher capacities. These heat exchangers have been extensively tested to establish flow and pressure drop characteristics that are properly matched to the requirements of efficiently designed hydronic systems. RELIABILITY and MAINTAINABILITY The all copper heat exchangers provide high con- duction heat transfer and excellent resistance against corrosion. They are silver -brazed for reliability against leakage. Every heat exchanger is pressure tested prior to shipment to ensure trouble free operation. INSTALLATION Installation versatility enables these heat exchangers to be mounted vertically or horizontally by the use of standard plumbing hangers or mechanical supports. Compact size permits installation in confined areas. All plumbing connections are standard copper sweat type fittings to further ease the installation. SOLAR COLLECTORS 100/200 series DESCRIPTION The Grumman Sunstream 100 200 series pro, odes the abiliry to integrate flat plate Solar <«temc directly into the roof, thus sang roofing costs. These collectors are %%ater-tight and available in single (100 series) or double glazed (200 series). A backless configuration as well as other option,; pertaining to size, inlet outlet configuration, and frame colors can be Specified. 'he 100 200 collectors like the 300 400 series are ideal for space heating or domestic hot water application. Many industrial process heat applications as well as selected air conditioning installations can also be accommodated. NSTALLATION VERSATILITY All 100 200 series collectors can.be installed vertically or horizontally. These collectors cut installation costs with features that both simplify and reduce the number of plumbing connections. Unique collector options are also available that can either permit significant customizing and/or dollar savings. The 0.96 (2.4 cm) flange around the entire periphery simplifies installation arrangements and provides suitable tolerance margins for support structure and mullion:flashing design. RELIABILTY and MAINTAINABILITY The 100/200 series collectors are designed to be compatible with long life building materials. The frame is an architectural aluminum alloy, mill finished, and clear anodized for improved weatherability. A weather sealing system makes the model 100/200 series suitable for integral roof construction. It employs mitered and "elded frame corners, EPDM rubber gaskets With vulcanized corners, and silicone rubber caulking for pan and insulation arras. This design is similar to high quality curtain wall construction. The 100/200 series collectors facilitate -maintenance over the long period of years 3t they will operate as all glazing can be . cplaced without disconnecting fluid connections. The "backless" option allows access to and disassembly of the absorber plate and fluid systems without disconnecting or disturbing the glazing. system.
