They were reduced to _ashes from piles of cracked$ ti splintered and broken that, for over a half a century, had protected these E!f .boards humble people from rain, snow and cold, 'howling winter winds. s This marked the end of Little Italy, but all is not lost. Today this plan is t being developed to establish the area known as "'Little Italy" and called by others, pago City, as a park with the patenti,al to bring back the rich history of a once- hardworking people and highly productive town known as Stirling City. fk ai ' F rr yF ., • . p; • r. . t Y ,i °'• III ,% e `, /- . rt r- + t1! t. ,1 , F '•. +.'f -. r ia. I 1 : r ' Environmental Setting: The Project Site: The project site comprises 20 acres located approximately 600 feet southeast of Stirling City. ;The topography while substantially flat, has a gradual (.5-10%) slope from east to west. An'intermittent; drainag4 traverses the property from north to south hi the western third of the property. The Soils are categorized as being in the McCarthy series. This soil is a. gravelly sandy loam, 20 to 40 inches in depth and slightly acid. Itis a well drained soil with a moderately rapid permeability., Because of the relatively flat terrain and the deep soils there has been no problem with soil instability: 'The dominant vegetation on the site includes Ponderosa Plrte, agar Pine, Incense;' Cedar, White Fir, Douglas Fir, Black Oak, Tan Oak and Cottonwood. Undergrowthincludes Manzanita, Big leaf Maple, Dogwood, dive Oak, hider, Blackberry, Bracken Fern, and Squaw Carpel, Typical wildlife which frequent the area include various birth including the, Steilars Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Western Tanager and the Rdiry Woodpecker. Mammals include skunks, chipmunks, gray squirrels, brush rabbits and black-tail deer. During the ea:Iy operation of the Diamond Match M U4. the project site was settled by a community of Italian immigrants and their families. This community was a .substantial part of Stirling City's population during the town's development in the early 1900's. The .Italian community remained a seperate entity from Stirling City Proper until the 193018 when the suburb was gradually abandoned. At present -there are no houses standing from this settlement, The only remnants remaining are some scattered foundations and boards. The site does not qualify for inclusion on the state register for historic sites. The remnant foundations however are being protected by including their location in the park design. Surrounding Properties. The land inimediau-71y surrounding the project site has the same type of vegetation,, animals and topography as the project site. The exception to this is a plantation of young Ponderosa Pine which borders the north- eastern corner of the project site. Thisplantation was planted approxim.nteiy five years ago on the site of the old Diamond Match mill and mi 11 yard. With the exception of Stirling City, the surrounding lands are being used to grow timber. The Diamond Match mill was built ;in 1903 and 1904. It was operated from 1904 until 1958 and burned;down the following year: Stirling City is located approximately I mile northwest of the project site. It was ,built as a company town for the Diamond Match mill in. the early. 19000s. At its peak in 1910, it supported a population of approximately 1200 reside & Since the mills closure, the population lots dropped to a couple hundred. The buildings are all single family residences with the p f ff small store and exc:e tion o a restaurant, the Desmond Lands o ice and a ,post office. r g STRUCTIONS TO USE PERMIT APPLICANT y . p +ageney'ntnr#t Tr 'lf applienn't is ant. tlnep, net, wra.ttcn artsthorirtion b h awvncr ar Ftthcr roof of he srltrnrtted in order for whe npplrccinf to legally srgn tile application.
