Any confusion I may have had concerning the water heater relief valve seem to have dissipated, since in accordance with the contents of your Mar, 10th letter the following circumstances prevail.. 1. There is a pressure relief valve installed on the cold water piping. 2. The heater is equipped with a temperature -limiting device. 3- Installation instructions provided with the water heater .by themanufacturer read:as follows:- "A pressure relief valve, or temperature pressure relief valve :must be installed on this heater. It is possible to seriously damage or burst the tank under certain conditions if the proper valve is .mot properly insttilled. Check local plumbing codes for proper installation of relief valves. Our warranty is null and , void if a relief valve -is not used." 4. The American Gas Association testing agency was not in- volved in the approval of this electric water heater. Concerning your letter dated March 10, 1970,.I do not -agree with what you say, nor the manner in which you say it. This office does not make demands as we are in•no position to do so. We request that corrections -be made. I believe that you are confused concerning temperature and pressure relief valves as a temperature -limiting device has no'connection at all with a pressure relief valve. Our underdtandifig is that, in your case, a pressure relief valve is required and that you have a temperature -limiting device on the heater which would normally suffice for the temperature relief valve; however, your manufacturerts instructions still call for the installation of the temperature relief valve. When the manufacturer so states, the AGA states that it must also be installed per the manufacturers recommendations. I hope this clears up the relief valve problem -and as soon as we receive revised talcs in accordance with accepted engineering practices, or you can verify your figures, we shall process the required permit.
