Hall Blvd. Beaverton, Or. 97005 Attn: Mr. Steve Bowmen x?-n- -I- Dear Mr. Bowmen; Enclosed please find a manufacturers specification for "Greenrod'backer rod and, "Mameco" weatherproofing sealant Vulkem 116. In addition to the two strips of closed'cell tape between the log course, I am proposing the installation of the Greenrod after the lord walls have been erected between all log courses and joints. The Mameco weather sealant is to be applied in areas were water and air leaks are apparent after the backer rod installation. The sealant is to be used at the head and jambs of all windows and doors. Also, at the location where floor beams penetrate the log walls and cantilever, both the backer rod and the sealant are to be used. A window detail has also been enclosed for your review. The exterior door head and jamb details are to be simular. Please note that I have added an additional piece of flashing at the sill condition of this detail. I have also noted points to recieve the sealant. In order to facilitate the tightest possible structure for log homes the following procedures are used in selection of materials, production, const- ruction and maintenance of Joseph Log Homes. Material used for house logs are standing dead Lodge Pole Pine from Eastern Oregon. Logs are tree length logged from timber stands in Eastern Oregon, and delivered to tree Joseph Forest Products Manufacturing facility in Joseph, Oregon. The logs are visually inspected and measured at the log utilization cut-off saw for soundness, dryness, length, and diameter (to within 1/10th of an inch), crook and any weaknesses such as sucker knots or large scars. Logs are cut to length and sorted in bins for various purposes, including house logs. The selected house logs are then peeled on a twin flouting head peeler that removes the bark and any soft outer material. The logs are then regraded and cut to specific lengths on the log utilization cut-off saw. The specific length logs are then three sided on the conventional mill where any defective logs are graded by the sawer and reduced to 2x6 or 6x6 if they do not meet specifications. The sawed logs are then surfaced on three sides on a specially designed planer. They are then graded by a registered lumber grader according to the attached specifications. The qualifying logs are unitized and stacked under cover ready for shipment. The reason only standing dead Lodge Pole Pine is used, is that when the Moun- tain Pine beatle attacks these trees it effectively drains the sap. This coupled with the dry climate of Eastern Oregon drys the standing tree to the heart. The tree develops splits, and as the tree splits it releases the ten- sion in the wood. These checks never pass the heart of the tree and if the majority of the wood is left and the heart is boxed the strength of the stem remains and is much more stable than air or kiln dried green wood. Attn: Mr. Bowmen Page 2. In testing various wood for use in log homes it was found that logs cut green, (living), could be air dried for over a year but still retain stress and racking, (movement or twisting of the wood). This racking tood place wile being manufactured and after construction. Checks would also develop after processing of green logs and there was no control or determination of where these checks would appear in the home. By selecting only standing dead, grading and sizing the house logs used in the Joseph Log Home package, the logs are as stable as kiln dried dimension lumber. The closed cell Norton sealant was selected because it's close cell con- struction prohibited air or water flow wile providing the maximum recovery for maintaining a seal. Various caulks provided as tight a seal but did not provide the recovery characteristics required to guarantee long term low maintenance protection. Log selection and production provides a relatively uniform log and place- ment of check. However, since a natural log is used variation in unifority will occur. The contractor is to select the logs for placement. The wider face of a log is to be placed down so that it will coincide or overlap the lower face. Exterior dominant checks are to be faced down. The foam tape is to be laid in a continual, double line. All openings, (windows and doors) are to be sealed and faced. Ten percent additional logs are sent to the contractor so that the selection process will -be followed without a shortage of materials. C.W.F. log sealant or equivilent is recommended and instructions for liberal application during the first dry season recommended. Since there is nominal additional checking and minimal movement with the standing dead Lodge Pole Pine, the logs have a low maintenance for a long term. I have requested Mr. Fickes to supply you with a log grading specification. He thought you were given this information earlier. I hope this information will help expidit the permit process, and if you have additional question or require further information please don't hesitate to call me. Sincerely Yours, A"t44 6 x-7 Francis C. Vulkem 116 does not require a primer on most construction materials. ' Basic'Uses: Vulkem 116 is an excellent general purpose sealant designed for use in precast, masonry, glazing, win- dow frame perimeters and similar types of construction joints. Vulkem 116 is.suitable for continual immer- sion in water. Vulkem 116 is de- signed for exterior and interior use and may also be used in glazing as cap, toe, or heel bead. Also suitable Sealant for varied manufacturing uses, such as, production of travel trailers and mobile homes and in assembly of galvanized air conditioning duct, work. Limitations: ... Do not apply over damp or con- taminated surfaces. ... Use with adequate ventilation. Packaging: 1/12 gallon and quart cartridges, 1, 2 and 5 gallon pails and 55 gallon drums. Colors: White, Limestone, Aluminum, Gray, Dark Tan, Bronze, and Black. MAMECO Specification Data APPLICABLE STANDARDS: Conforms to U.S. Federal Specifi- cation TT -S -00230C, Type II, Class ,A and ASTM C 920-79, Type S, Grade N S, Class 25, Use NT, M, A, and O. INSTALLATION Joint Design: May be used in any vertical or hori- zontal joint designed in accordance with accepted glazing or architec tural/engineering practice. Joint width should be 4 times anticipated movement, but not less than 1 /4" wide. Movement should not exceed 25% of the minimum joint width. Joint Dimensions: For joints 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch wide, the width to depth ratio should be equal. Joints 1/2 inch wide or great- er should have a sealant depth of 1/2 inch. Minimum joint size is 1/4 inch by 1/4 inch except when glazing where cap bead minimum size is 1/8 inch wide and 1/4 inch deep. Surface Preparation: For good adhesion, the joint inter- face must be sound, clean and dry. Depending on the substrates, or presence of form release agents, masonry waterproofings, dust, loose mortar or laitance, architec- tural paints or finishes, the joint sur- face may require a thorough wire brushing, grinding, sandblasting, solvent washing and/or a primer. Tooling & Cleaning: Tooling is recommended im- mediately after application to insure firm, intimate contact with the joint interface. Dry tooling is preferred, although tooling agents can be uti- lized. Excess sealant and smears adjacent to the joint can be removed with Xylol or Toluol before sealant cures. Joint Backing—Bond Breaking Tape Closed cell polyethylene and some open cell polyurethane rods may be used as joint backing to control depth of sealant bead. Where depth of joint will prevent use of joint back- ing, an adhesive backed polyethylene tape must be installed to prevent three sided adhesion. Joint backing must be dry at time of sealant application. Vulkem 116 is compatible with preformed tapes and bedding com- pounds used in glazing. a JOHN LATTA ASSOCIATES, INC.
