The inner part: should be lined with ceramic the to a point at laast a
foot below where a connector will be attached. If no liner exists it may
be possible to add a liner with tile or stainless steel. Unlined chimneys
should noL be used with air tight stoves and furnaces. There is much ore
risk of creosote build -up -and less protection against burn out.
If a new masonry chimney is to be built, minimum flue liner size should
be 8" x 8" with concrete or cinder block. Round tile liners should be
used if available as they provide the most efficient and easily maintained
chimney system. It.may be harder to get a mason to use round tile, but
it will provide a significantly better chimney in the long run.

If there is a choice, the chimney should always be inside the house! If
of masonry, it will add radiant heat to the house. Even a.prefab chimney
can help heat the home somewhat if it is on the inside. More significant,
however, the inside systems remain warmer and therefore have less chance
of producing creosote. chimneys are thereby safer when constructed
inside the home, rather than on an outside wall.
By following these basic instructions, a furnace installation can be safe
and free of any potential problems, assuming proper furnace operation
procedures are followed. These procedures, while quite simple to follow,
are very important tot he safe use of a wood burning system.

( C H I M N E Y S -- How They Work, (And Why Some Don't
1
The best furnace design and the best furnace installation in the world
can be defeated by using a poor chimney. This is the weak point of many
systems, and one where many problems can occur.
A chimney has several basic purposes. One is to carry away the waste gases
generated by a fire, another is to create a draft to enable the fire to
burn in the first place, and finally, it must dissipate some of the heat
generated by the fire.
Basically, a chimney works because warm air rises and cool air falls.
As cool air is heated in a furnace, it rises up the chimney, warming the.
chimney. More air is drawn into the furnace to be used in the combustion
process, which generates more heat to be expelled up the chimney. As the
chimney continues to heat up, the draft or suction at the base of the
chimney becomes greater. For this reason, a chimney must be kept warm
constantly in order to stabilize the combustion draft for a steady,
long-lasting fire.
Factors which also affect the way a chimney performs are the -cross sectional
area, height, temperature difference between inside and outside, the number
of elbows or bends in the system, and the degree of airtightness. -The
most important of these is the cross sectional area. That is why it is
important to calculate your needs properly before you irifitall a system.
It is hard to make a chimney larger after you have it installed.
Height can be a factor also. Adding extra height to a chimney can increase
the draft, but not in proportion to the added height. For example, a 107.1
increase in height would yield but a 5% increase in efficiency. Elbows
or bends in a system increase resistance to flow and.thereby &educe draft.
They also add constricted areas which make it difficult to clean the
system. A STRAIGHT -UP RUN OF CHIMNEY IS THE BEST FOR ALL SITUATIONS!
Air leaks any place in the system can also hurt chimney performance.
Draft can be robbed by air leaking through poor joints or in the stove
pipe connection area, or from another appliance that may be vented on the
same flue. This can cause dilution andcooling of the gases, and an
eventual increase of creosote build-up. Any cause of air leaks in a
connector or chimney system should be avoided.
Height above the roof and above draft impeding obstacles is improtant
also. A chimney must be at least 3 feet above the roof at the high point
of where it comes through the roof, and 2 feet above any point within 10
feet of the chimney. This recommendation is to prevent downdrafts.and
structural fire from sparks occurring. (See diagram on following page.
Masonry chimneys provide the most commonly used systems for furnace
venting. An existing
exhaust system for amason
furnace. ry chimney, if in good shape, can be a perfect
before it st used. Its integrity must be known however,
It should be inspected inside and out for structural
soundness. Brick and mortar joints should show no sighs of failing.

INTRODUCING
Charmaster-
America's Finest Heating Systems
Charmaster Products Inc., and their loyal employees thank you for your interest in the Charmaster line of
furnaces. If you remember the old Christmas fable which says, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus", you
will understand us, when we quote, "Yes Virginia, there is a Grand Rapids, Minnesota." And . . .what's
more we manufacture the FINEST WOOD CENTRAL HOME HEATING SYSTEMS here, in the Northwoods.
i Alla=—
Pictured above
is a Charmaster
Wood With Controls
Furnace with a 30" long firebox. This unit is normally
used as an add-on with your existing Gas or Oil Furnace.
Grand Rapids is located near International Falls;
Minnesota, one of the coldest areas in the nation.
Being able to withstand the cold Northern
Minnesota weather is in itself a testimony to our
unique WOOD CENTRAL HOME HEATING
SYSTEMS. Each year we have temperatures which
drop to 45 and 50 degrees below zero. We heat
our homes here with ease under the most severe
weather conditions imaginable. Our research is
constant. We are always monitoring during
extreme temperatures in order -to give the
consumer the highest performance and maximum
warmth available in a wood furnace.
CHARMASTER is one of the original
manufacturers of WOOD CENTRAL HEATING. The
theory and engineering principles were passed on
to our company president by the pioneer in wood
furnace manufacturing, Mr. Joel Nyquist. His
techniques and ideas were developed and
introduced to commercial manufacturing in the
1920's. We began producing the Charmaster wood
furnace with the guidance of Mr. Nyquist long
before the energy crisis engulfed the world. The
term, "Alternate Sources of Energy" had not been
conceived in our wildest dreams. Now, alternate
energy sources are an absolute necessity.
We, at CHARMASTER, know quality. We strive to build this quality and long lasting durability into
every CHARMASTER furnace. All of our furnaces are of our own manufacture and the component parts
are well known, well established national name brands. The furnaces are faithfully photographed,
conservatively described, and listed at fair, competitive prices.
Our name, CHARMASTER, comes from the word_ CHARCOAL, and a CHARMASTER. furnace is a
MASTER at producing charcoal. The CHARMASTER is the only wood burning furnace which will convert
your wood into a GLOWING BED OF CHARCOAL. CHARMASTER will produce heat for your entire home

Charcoal is produced in an airtight environment.
ALL OF THE CHARMASTER FURNACES ARE
MINIATURE CHARCOAL FACTORIES. All
CHARMASTER furnaces are airtight units which
convert your wood into a beautiful bed of charcoal.
This is impossible in other furnaces which have
open, conventional grates. A CHARMASTER
FURNACE WILL SQUEEZE ALL THE HEAT FROM
YOUR WOOD WITH THIS EFFICIENT PROCESS,
AND WILL CONSUME FAR LESS wood than
required with other furnaces. Your bed of charcoal
remains in the furnace, and becomes the base for
the tremendous amount of BTU's which will heat

intense, long-lasting heat which your CHARMASTER will produce. The CHARMASTER will utilize this
same heat for your home for up to 18 hours.
"America's Finest Wood Heat System"
THIS IS A REPUTATION THAT WAS EARNED -NOT JUST R SLOGAN
A CHARMASTER or CHALET furnace is a SUPER EFFICIENT wood burning device for CENTRAL HOME
HEATING. CHARMASTER furnaces are far superior and more technically advanced than any other wood
burning unit on the market today.
CHARMASTER provides an extra large firebox on all models in order to maintain a huge reserve of
charcoal at all times. For LOWER COST—TOP PERFORMANCE—HIGH EFFICIENCY, you can not beat
CHARMASTER'S proven WOOD CENTRAL HEATING SYSTEMS!
Our furnaces are manufactured with the highest quality components available in the heating industry.
Everything is designed so that it is a SIMPLE, STANDARD installation procedure for any home owner,
furnace dealer, or heating contractor. ALL CHARMASTER furnaces are shipped with our plainly written,
easy to understand, INSTRUCTION -INSTALLATION and OPERATING manual. MANY OF OUR
HOMEOWNERS ARE INSTALLING THEIR OWN CHARMASTER FURNACES.
ALL OF OUR CHARMASTER, CHARMASTER II, AND CHALET MODEL FURNACES HAVE THE STATE
OF MAINE SEAL OF APPROVAL. THE ENERGY TESTING LABORATORY OF THE STATE OF MAINE HAS
THE WORLD'S LARGEST AND MOST COMPREHENSIVE TESTING FACILITIES FOR SOLID FUEL
FURNACES. MOST ALL OTHER STATES NOW RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE TESTING AND
APPROVAL OF THE STATE OF MAINE LABORATORY.
"WHY CHARMASTER IS
AMERICA'S FINEST"
A CHARMASTER furnace will burn half the -wood
required by other brands to heat your entire home.
The CHARMASTER air -tight burning principle far
surpasses all of the other wood furnaces using a
conventional open grate or shaker grate system.
The CHARMASTER and CHALET furnaces bring
their combustion air into the furnace over the top of
the fire. Other brands use a grate designed to bring
the combustion air in below the fire and up through
the coals.
A wood furnace with the conventional open
(coal burning type) grate has three definite
DISADVANTAGES:
1. Combustion air enters below the grate, flows up
THROUGH the coals. . The bulk and heart of the
fire burns away rapidly. This produces short
burn times, uneven heat, and EXCESSIVE
WOOD CONSUMPTION. WHEN YOU BUY A
CHARMASTER ' FURNACE, THIS DOES NOT
HAPPEN.
2. Another disadvantage of the open grate, is the
immediate burning of the oxygen as it passes up
through the bed. of hot coals. This leaves little
(if any) oxygen available ABOVE THE FIRE to
burn the gases. This is very poor efficiency.
You could burn extra, UNNECESSARY, wood.
DOES NOT HAPPEN.
WHEN YOU BUY A CHARMASTER .FURNACE, THIS
3. Since 40% to 60% of the heat value in firewood is in the GASES PRODUCED in the burning process, a
furnace will not burn efficiently without oxygen ABOVE THE FIRE to burn these gases. Unburned
gases allow excessive amounts of creosote to form, lower efficiency, and cost you more money.
Creosote formation can create a hazardous situation. CHARMASTER'S improved technology
I'it h
m
e ina es t e three problems completely.
COMBUSTION AIR flows into the top of the fire
through the FULLY AUTOMATIC DRAFT CONTROL.
The heat output of your furnace is controlled by a
wall mounted Honeywell thermostat. In the event
of an electrical power outage, the draft door closes
AUTOMATICALLY. Combustion air flow to your
wood fire is then closed off. Another proven safety
feature by CHARMASTER!

We installed a Charmaster R Furnace in our home four
years ago, when we first built. We have the fireplace,
oil back up and also the hot water coils. We have a
large home with eleven rooms we heat — and very well
I must say. We use our furnace strictly on wood and
the majority of the time on gravity. It has done a fine
job. We like it and have recommended it several
times.
J.R., Minong, Wisconsin
CHARMASTER engineering has produced a burning principle with FANTASTIC RESULTS. All
CHARMASTER and CHALET models have a sliding, heavy -duty -steel, solid grate system. ASH REMOVAL
IS QUICK, EASY, AND CLEAN. SIMPLY SLIDE THE FRONT GRATE BACK and allow the ashes to fall into
the large ash drawer. With this superior air -tight solid grate, a CHARMASTER WILL BUILD UP A LARGE
BED OF EXTREMELY HOT CHARCOAL. This charcoal heat reserve of one bushel or more combined with
your "OVER -THE -FIRE" draft burns the gases which are produced. Unlike other furnaces which burn
with long, out of control yellow flames, a CHARMASTER burns with short, blue-green flames which are
very hot. CHARMASTER has a clean burning flame, with a smokeless burn.
The large bed of charcoal is producing a huge amount of clean, safe, thermostatically controlled
heating comfort for your home. The continuous heat reserve prevents your chimney from cooling down. A
warm smoke pipe and chimney cannot produce creosote. With CHARMASTER'S "OVER -THE -FIRE" draft,
your wood combustion will be complete. Ashes are burned thoroughly to powder consistency. Experience
has shown that even the very expensive gasifier type furnaces costing over four to six thousand dollars or
more, will not equal the performance of the CHARMASTER AIR TIGHT SOLID GRATE SYSTEM!
You may order directly from us here at the Grand Rapids, Minnesota factory. Mail orders are

Combination Furnace. This furnace has a 30" long
firebox. The oil burner is shown as mounted on the
right-hand side of the 111-03" wood firing door.
FEATURES OF A CHARMASTER OR CHALET
WOOD -OIL COMBINATION FURNACE:
A. Extremely efficient oil burning capabilities — 78% to 80% oil burning efficiency — Most standard oil
furnaces burn at about 65% efficiency, or less.
B. Oil burner will ignite the wood for faster start ups, if desired.
C. Separate Honeywell Thermostats. One thermostat controls the wood portion of the furnace. One
controls the oil portion of the furnace. Simple, straightforward engineering makes operating a
Charmaster easy.
D. Charmaster's charcoal producing ability offers highest efficiency wood burning — This results in a
warm home 24 hours a day using wood alone. No need for the oil burner to operate in the early
morning hours. This is saving your oil heating costs, considerably. Customers report no oil is
required for heating when they simply load the furnace with wood twice a day. Their oil burner is only
used when they are away from home for extended periods, such as vacations.
E. Trouble free operation! Simple, reliable design. No high-tech circuitry.

WOOD FURNACE WITH CONTROLS
All CHARMASTER furnaces use the same proven wood burning .and heat exchanging principles. The
original CHARMASTER Wood Furnace with Controls provides heat for a large home in a very cold
climate. This is accomplished by the ultimate in wood burning design and efficiency. This model is
usually used as an add-on unit in conjunction with an existing oil or gas furnace.
The fire box is designed as an airtight unit. The grate consists of two parts constructed of solid steel
plate. The rear half is a stationary airtight grate for the rear of .the firebox. The front half provides the
same function, but can be slid backward to allow ashes to be deposited in the large ash drawer.
Fire brick lining is provided to more evenly distribute heat.and provide longer life.

The large 11" x 13" cast iron wood feed door
forms a portion of the steel front of the fire box.
This allows large unsplit wood to be used. Within
the feed door is a smaller door controlled by a wall
mounted thermostat in the home. This draft door
allows combustion air to flow to the top of the wood
fire. It opens when the thermostat setting indicates
heat is required in the home. The motor used to
open the draft door operates on 110 volts. This
unique safety feature allows the door to close in the
event of a power outage. The draft door is the only
path provided for combustion air into the fire box.
The rear of the fire box has an 8 inch outlet for
flue gases (smoke). These hot gases are burned
by mixing with air in the fire box and the heat is
drawn through the outlet into a large steel heat
exchanger. The heat exchanger has an upper and
lower smoke outlet to the chimney pipes. The
upper outlet has a more direct path from the fire
box and therefore can provide heat directly into the
flue. A damper is provided .in the upper outlet to
control the amount of heat released for maintaining
proper chimney temperature. This prevents
creosote formation without allowing excessive heat
to escape when larger fires are used. The lower
outlet releases flue gases after they have passed
through the entire heat exchanger. An additional
damper is used in the chimney pipe to control total
chimney draft.
Combination Wood -Oil furnaces use a barometric draft control on the chimney pipe instead of the
chimney pipe damper. See Chimney Requirements for further information.
A standard "fan limit switch" senses the
plenum temperature above the fire box to control
the furnace blower. When cool air is directed into
the insulated furnace jacket by.the blower, the
entire fire box and heat exchanger are surrounded
by forced air. Heat is extracted from both the fire
box and heat exchanger, directed to the warm air
plenum and distributed to your ductwork. ALL
ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING
PRINCIPLES ARE UTILIZED TO PROVIDE THE
MOST EFFICIENT AND COST EFFECTIVE
PRODUCT FOR WOOD BURNING APPLICATIONS.
COMBINATION WOOD -OIL FURNACE
Hi there — Sending this card from Hawaii. We
recommended a Charmaster to our friend Jack,
the man who built the castle on Mt. Diablo. He
was so happy after using the Charmaster for one
year he gave us this free vacation. Have been
thinking of you and Charmaster.

This is the best appliance I have ever owned.
Dr. A.S. Davenport, Iowa
The Combination Wood -Oil furnace is identical to the Wood with Controls model with the addition of a gun
type oil burner mounted on the front of the fire box. This self igniting oil burner is extremely high in efficiency
because of the large area inside the fire box and the flame is directed diagonally across the fire box for more
exposure. An interlock switch prevents oil. burner operation when the wood feed door is open.

CHARMASTER provides a second thermostat to control the oil unit. Many experienced users tell us
they only need the oil unit when absent from home fc
COMBINATION
WOOD -GAS FURNACE
The Combination Wood -Gas furnace includes a
counterflow gas furnace for either LP or Natural
gas. The gas furnace attaches to the bottom of the
wood furnace jacket, and when activated, furnishes
warm air which is directed upward to the warm air
plenum and distributed to your ductwork. All cold
air returns connect to the top of the gas
furnace. Gas operation is controlled by a second
thermostat provided by Charmaster. Like the oil
burning unit, many owners use the gas furnace only
when away from home for extended periods.
Wood -Gas models must have a SEPARATE
Class "B" chimney for the gas unit. This chimney
cannot be associated with any other chimney.

A Charmaster Exclusive
"The Creosote Eliminator"
Creosote is formed by warm; moist, smoke colliding with a cool smoke pipe and chimney, and
condensing. If chimney temperature is kept at about 250 degrees, the formation of creosote is eliminated.
The top smoke outlet with the built-in damper, acts as a super creosote eliminator. The top smoke
outlet is scientifically engineered to allow a constant controlled flow of warm smoke into the chimney to
prevent creosote. Opening the top outlet damper during Fall and Spring burning will keep the chimney
temperature above 250 degrees. Creosote cannot form. The results are clean smoke pipes, and a
warm, clean chimney. With a CHARMASTER or CHALET system, you can start burning wood earlier in
the Fall and continue later in the Spring, with safe, clean equipment. The longer yearly burning time with
a CHARMASTER offers. the customer even greater savings on their oil and gas bills. Your CHARMASTER
pays for itself sooner by burning for you the entire heating season.

and a cold chimney is a dirty, dangerous chimney.

Cold weather burning requires a larger load of
firewood and a larger bed of charcoal. Your
Charmaster would be burning harder — thus
producing. more heat. The top heat exchanger

chimney will automatically be warmer. . Now your
furnace is in its most efficient mode.

All Charmaster and Chalet furnaces have a large heat exchanger. The purpose of the heat
exchanger is to extract heat from the smoke before it goes up the chimney — thus making the furnace
much more efficient. Most wood furnaces do not have a heat exchanger.
I must first express what my customers
tell me about the Charmaster, to which
I agree, as I also have one in my home
and am well satisfied. In 4'/z years, I
only used 100 gals. of fuel oil. It is very
cold here in winter. Not bad! Glad to
see you now install a Domestic Hot
Water Coil FREE with each furnace.

fuel oil was still cheap). We have told
many people about how good the fur-

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE
EMBERS OUTDOOR WOOD FURNACE?
"An OUTDOOR WOOD Furnace"
The EMBERS was designed for heating mobile homes
and conventional homes without a basement. This fur-
nace is also ideal for manufacturing areas or
warehouses where space is vital. No need for wood
storage inside the building.
The total concept involves space, convenience and safe-
ty. Why cramp an inefficient wood stove into a mobile
home or a home lacking a basement? Why carry in your
firewood supply through the living area and onto your
carpet? Why the mess? We at CHARMASTER know
there has to be a better way. AND THE EMBERS OUT-
DOOR WOOD FURNACE IS THE BETTER WAY!
Keep your firewood and fire outdoors. Only the heat
enters your home.
A NEW DESIGN!
THE CHIMNEY SYSTEM:
The chimney system is the simplest of all!
Built to withstand the elements. A thick galvanealed A chimney mount is provided inside your
steel jacket surrounds the EMBERS. Fully lined inside EMBERS to support a 6" diameter — IN -
with high density fiberglass insulation so heat won't SULATED — Metalbestos brand Class A

There is no need for an extra building to protect the with EMBERS. Customers will purchase
EMBERS. chimney, locally.)
HOW AN EMBERS WORKS:
SIMPLE INSTALLATION!
Simply place your EMBERS Outdoor Wood Furnace a
few feet from your home. Attach two 12" round insulated
ducts between your EMBERS furnace and the duct work
systems in your home. One duct brings cold air from
your home into the furnace and one brings hot air from
your furnace into your home. The 12" insulated flexible
ductwork is available through CHARMASTER. The in-
stallation is quite simple and easy.
Mount the free Honeywell thermostat in your living area.
This controls a small combustion air blower mounted on
the EMBERS firing door. When the thermostat requires
heat, the combustion air blower starts and increases the
burning rate of the wood fire, which produces more heat.
The increased heat is detected by a fan -limit switch
mounted inside the furnace jacket. When the jacket
temperature reaches 120 degrees, the fan -limit switch
will start the large 1/2 H.P. furnace blower.
This blower will pull the cold air from your home, force it
through the furnace as hot air and push it back into your
home through your hot air duct system.
Your EMBERS furnace is controlled by your thermostat
setting.
THIS IS EXACTLY THE WAY ALL OIL, GAS
OR ELECTRIC FURNACES WORK!
-9-
There are no stove pipes to purchase or clean.
The EMBERS has an extra heavy duty chimney
damper built right in.

AUTOMATIC AIR INTAKE
The Automatic Air Intake is a 10 x 20 inch /
unit that will mount over an opening cut
into your furnace jacket. COLD AIR
The 10 by 20 inch door will be opened RETURN
and closed by a 110 volt gear head motor. PACKAGE
The door is held closed while your AUTOMATIC
furnace blower is running. Thus you
would have a typical forced air furnace AIR INTAKE
operation.
When your furnace blower is not running, the 10 x 20 inch door will be open.
With the door in the open position, your furnace will be operating as a GRAVITY TYPE SYSTEM. Cool
basement air can now enter the 10 x 20 inch door and flow into your furnace. The air will be heated
by your Charmaster furnace and flow out your hot air registers, heating your home.
When your home is heated by gravity air flow, the blower motor
will start less often, and run for shorter periods of time. This
saves you money on. your monthly Electric Bill and provides
more even heat.
During an electrical power outage, the 10 x 20 inch door will
automatically open, and the combustion air draft door will
close. Your furnace would be on gravity heat during a power
outage —,cooling your furnace and heating your home.
Standard 10 x 20 inch furnace filters are
c used in this unit for complete air filtration.

SMOKE PIPE KIT,
The Smoke Pipe Kit for our Chalet, Charmaster and Charmaster II is required for
all installations. The 8" diameter pipe is constructed of extra heavy 24 gauge
galvanized metal. The kit includes (2) 900 adjustable elbows, (2) 24" smoke pipes,
(1) tee, (1) non -galvanized drawband and (1) manual damper (if required).
COLD AIR RETURN PACKAGE
The cold air return can greatly increase the efficiency of your wood furnace and
help in the circulation of heat in your home. Most basement heating installations
would include a cold air return. Our volume buying saves you money. It is custom
made to fit a Chalet, Charmaster or Charmaster R furnace, and includes an
air filter.

SAFETY HEAT DUMP
The Safety Heat Dump is mounted on any side of your hot air plenum.
A 10" x 20" door is held closed by a spring and a fusible link. This
door remains closed as long as the furnace blower cycles, and the
furnace heat is being forced out through yourhot air duct work system.
Should your home experience an ELECTRICAL POWER OUTAGE, the
furnace blower would not function. During that time, your plenum
temperature may reach 280 degrees or more. At that time a fusible link
will melt in the Safety Heat Dump, which allows the 10" x 20" door to
open. This will allow the excess hot air to escape safely into your
basement. This safety system, which is exclusive with Charmaster,
prevents your duct work from overheating. Three fusible links are
included with every Safety Heat Dump, and replacements are available
from Charmaster.
WOOD FORK
The Wood Fork has proven to be one of the best methods of handling firewood. So easy to use! With
the Wood Fork, you'll easily pick up a piece of firewood from your wood pile and safely place it in your
furnace. All steel construction. Eliminates stooping and bending. Keeps the wood away from you, no
more wood chips, and debris on your expensive clothing. Positively eliminates burned fingers, skinned
knuckles, and broken finger nails. Soot marks on your jacket
or shirt sleeves are a thing of the past. Ideal for men and
Wood Fork women alike! Proven by thousands of wood burners.
Chimney Requirements
A.proper chimney is the MOST IMPORTANT part of your wood burning system. A WARM CHIMNEY IS A
CLEAN CHIMNEY. A COLD CHIMNEY IS A DIRTY CHIMNEY. A cool chimney becomes a STILL
(condenser) for the warm gases released by the combustion process of wood burning. These gases,
including moisture, actually will condense (solidify) on the inside of a cool smoke pipe or a cool chimney.
This action creates creosote. The accumulation of creosote inside the chimney system (flue) is a
hazardous situation. It is important to provide adequate heat to maintain a warm flue. Adjusting the
damper in the top smoke outlet of the CHARMASTER heat exchanger provides heat for controlling flue
temperature.
LOCAL LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED REGARDING CHIMNEY CONSTRUCTION
CHARMASTER recommends the following MINIMUM requirements:
STAINLESS STEEL PREFABRICATED INSULATED:
Class "A" 8,inch inside diameter stainless with insulation between the individual pipes. NOT AIR
INSULATED.
MASONARY:
Class "A" masonary with 8 inch or larger STAINLESS LINER.
Class "A" masonary with 8 inch or larger CLAY TILE LINER.
Wood -Gas models must have a SEPARATE Class "B" chimney for the gas unit. This chimney cannot be
associated with anyAother chimney.

the 24 inch firebox) have been tested and
listed by Energy Testing Laboratory of Maine.
(E.T.L.M.)
E.T.L.M. is the worlds largest solid fuel
testing laboratory and is recognized by most
insurance companies and state building
codes. E.T.L.M. tests to their standard
number 78-1. E.T.L.M. also tests to several
U.L. standards. Including:

I
Common
Why would I want to order a 3/4 H.P. Blower?
Do I need it?
You would want a 3/4 H.P. Blower in your furnace if you
are planning central air conditioning, or if you will be
heating a very large home.
How many B.T.U. will the furnace put out?
Wood Furnaces should not be rated by BTU's. Testing
and rating in a test lab is not a real world situation.
Variables inherent in wood species, moisture content,
and draft settings all affect B.T.U. output. Charmaster
Instruction Manuals provide information to obtain the
most heat possible from your wood supply.
A Chalet Model has a 24 Inch long firebox, and is
capable of heating homes in Northern Minnesota climate
of 2,000 Sq. Feet, or more. It will heat larger homes in
moderate climate states.
The Charmaster has a 30 Inch long firebox, and is
capable of heating homes in Minnesota -type climates of
5,000 Sq. Feet, or more. A big advantage of the
Charmaster Model is being able to use longer wood,
saving saw cuts and handling labor.
How long does it take for you to ship, after you
get our check?
Furnaces are shipped within 2 working days on credit
card or certified check orders. Personal checks may
require longer.
How long will it take to get here?
Allow 10 to 14 days to the East or West Coast. Allow 7
days to most areas of the Midwest.
Thank you for your very cooperat9we service when I
phoned your plant. I am very pleased with the Char -
master Furnace. I have used very little fuel oil this win-
ter and approximately only 5 cords of wood. I am very
pleased with you and your products & if you ever need
a reference or an example to show someone, please
feel free to call me. Thanks again.
S.H., New Prague, Minnesota
How large should a wood furnace room be?
Very good question. Please do not crowd a wood
furnace. The National Fire Protection Association
requires 4 feet from the firing door to any combustible
surface or wall. Leave 18 Inches on each side of
furnace and 18 Inches for all smoke pipes to a
combustible surface. The mathematics resulting in an
area 12 1/2 X 6 feet minimum, assuming combustible
walls on all tour sides.
What happens during an extended power
outage?
All Chalet and Charmaster furnaces have an opening in
the side jacket which is covered with a removable panel.
When this panel is removed, . cool basement air enters
the opening. Your furnace is converted to a gravity
heating unit. Many customers have been without power
(due to ice storms, etc.)`for several days and had no
problems heating their homes. Heated air will rise and
flow through your ductwork during this time. This
feature. has been ' a Charmaster exclusive since 1972.
I do have a Charmaster in my home, heating a little
more than 7,300 sq. ft., that I have shown many times.
I assure you, seeing my furnace in operation leaves
little doubt about Charmasters' operational efficiency.

Questions
—13—
How long have Charmaster furnaces been
made, and where are they manufactured?
Mass production of Charmaster Furnaces began in 1972
at their original facility in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. We
have furnaces burning in every state except Hawaii.
Do you have a Dealer in my area?
Charmaster Products Inc. excels in factory direct sales.
With our reputation you can rest assured you are
receiving a quality furnace from a company you can
trust. We pride ourselves on quality -and service. No
one does it better than Charmaster. Charmaster has a
few good dealers in the country. If there is one in your
area, you were given their name.
Do you have a customer in our area that we
could call?
Contact us on this. Many times we can locate a
customer which would be convenient for you.
Thank you for being so helpful answering my furnace
questions. In Sept. 1976 1 purchased a Charmaster
and have used it almost exclusively with wood since. I
am extremely pleased with it.
W.P., Consulting Engineer,
Duluth, Minnesota
Can I install the furnace myself?
Yes, you can install these units yourself. Most of our
customers can easily follow our Installation Manual, and
install the furnace safely. This is a standard forced air
unit, therefore, any competent Heating Contractor would
also be able to assist you.
Service has not been a problem. We stock all parts
here at our plant, and they can be shipped out by
United Parcel without delays. Most homeowners easily
service their Charmaster furnace themselves.
What size oil line do I need? Can I have the
oil barrel outside?
A 3/8 Inch or 1/2 Inch O.D. copper line. Yes, your oil
tank may be either inside or outside, or buried
underground. Our high quality oil burner pump can lift
oil 12 feet vertically.
How heavy is the furnace?.
The shipping weight on the Chalet is 550 pounds -
Charmaster 650 pounds - Embers 550 pounds.
I am very pleased with my Chateau furnace. I would
recommend it to any of my friends as I have already
done. Thank you for the excellent workmanship and
design. A satisfied customer.
C.S., Fertile, Minnesota
I cannot control the fire in my wood stove. Will
your furnace be controllable?
Yes/ The Honeywell thermostat will open the combustion,
air draft door when heat is required, and close it when
the thermostat is satisfied. The draft door opening is
adjustable, and should be 1/4 to 1/2 Inch open when
activated by the thermostat. YOU DO NOT REGULATE
THE HEAT IN YOUR HOME BY THE AMOUNT OF
WOOD YOU LOAD INTO THE CHARMASTER/CHALET
FURNACE. Simply load enough wood to do the job -
normally, twice a day - and let. the thermostat do its job.
The less one plays with the furnace, the better it will
work. Most homeowners heat their home plus or minus
about 2 degrees, all winter using wood.
We don't live in Minnesota, but can you tell me
about how much wood a Charmaster will burn in
your long winters?
Certainly, an older 3 -bedroom home will burn 5 to 6
cords. Total cost - cut and delivered at $60.00 a cord -
about $360.00 a year, and you get free domestic hot
water for about 5 months.
I have been in the heating business for 18 years. I
bought the Charmaster U Furnace/ Fireplace model
and will gladly give references for you. It is the best
piece of equipment I have ever purchased.
D.T., Grand Rapids, Minnesota
What is a wood add-on furnace? Do they work?
Yes, they are very common and work well. Our Wood
with Controls models are add-on furnaces. The wood
furnace heat flows into the same hot air ductwork as
your existing furnace. The cold air return system is
connected to your existing cold air system. The wood
furnace heats your home and is controlled by a separate
thermostat.
What about ash removal? How often? Is it
messy?
It's not a problem. Most people remove ashes every
two to three weeks. Certain wood species make more
ashes. It's not messy at all if you follow the instructions.
The ashes fall directly into the ash pan. After cooling
for about 24 hours, the ash pan is removed and
dumped into an appropriate metal container.
Thank you for being so generous with your time and
information when I spoke with you today and last week!
Your interest in my needs makes it even more plea-
sant to do business with Charmaster. I appreciate
your comments regarding satisfied customers. Char -
master was recommended to me by my brother S.F.M.
in. Moorhead, Minnesota. He and his family have been
very pleased with their wood/oil furnace over the last
three heating seasons. Were it not for his recommen-
dation to purchase Charmaster, I never would have
known I could order directly from your factory. I
would like to confirm my telephone order, today, at
your factory direct price.
Sincerely,
A.K.M., Dartmouth College,
Hanover, New Hampshire
Will my insurance company approve a
Charmaster Furnace?
Yes. All Chalet and Charmaster models are tested and
listed by E.T.L.M., a nationally recognized facility. Each
furnace has a permanent manufacturers label, and
serial number riveted in place. This is what insurance
companies require.
Do you have oil burner problems with the oil
burning in the same firebox? Do the burners
plug up?
Absolutely not! Charmaster uses a very expensive and
high quality oil burner. Also, the location of the oil
burner is very important. Our oil burners are a "Flame
Retention" type, and do not require a separate
combustion chamber. We have heard of this problem
in other brands. Experience of over 18 years using our
same engineering and same brand of oil burner proves
that you will not have a problem with the Charmaster or
Chalet. We have reports of burners in operation for 10
years being as clean inside, as the day they were
installed.
MEM
How far can the Embers Outdoor Furnace be
placed from my house?
We recommend a short distance of four to six feet. The
Embers is a forced air furnace. Pushng air for long
distances could be a problem. Distance will also
depend on the size of your duct work and registers.
My customer lives on a high windy hill and used to use
1000 gals: of fuel oil a month in his 9 room old home.
It has 12 foot ceilings & no insulation. People told
him he was crazy to change to wood, but he trusted my
decision & I installed q Charmaster. He fills,it at 7:00
a.m. and'agalih at, fit p.m. -every day. He used less than
7 cords, of wood the. first winter., and he is giving me
very good references through the grocery store he
owns. He tells all his customers that the furnace is
"Fantastic".

An added bonus for CHARMASTER owners is
the domestic hot water coil. With a simple in-
stallation as diagrammed, your monthly savings
during the heating season can amount to as
much as,$70. And these savings go on month
after month, year after year. IT'S FREE with
your Chalet or Charmaster furnace.
I had a furnace problem and contacted
CHARMASTER for advice. We received
parts the following day and it corrected our
problem. The service was superb. I pur-
chased my furnace in 1975. It has been so
trouble free and this is the one thing we
would never part with. We have saved many
thousands of dollars in fuel costs over the
years. P.S. With a product and service like
this you'll be there forever.
