ORIENTED STRAND BOARD ROOF AND WALL SHEATHING, COMBINATION SUBFLOOR/UNDFR- LAYMENT, STAIR TREADS AND SMARTSTART LAP AND PANEL SIDING LOUISIANA-PACIFIC CORPORATION 10115 KINCEY AVENUE, SUITE 150 HUNTERSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA 28078 1.0 SUBJECT Oriented Strand Board Roof and Wall Sheathing, Combination Subfloor/Underlayment, Stair Treads and SmartStart Lap and Panel Siding. 2.0 DESCRIPTION 2.1 General: Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (L -P) oriented strand board panels are for use as roof and wall sheathing, combination subfloor/underlayment, and lap and panel siding. The strands in the surface layers of the panels are oriented along the length of the panels while the strands in the core of the panels are oriented randomly or along the width of the panels. The strands are bonded together by a heated pressure -forming process in accordance with the approved quality control manual. The panels have a density of approximately 40 pcf (640 kg/m3) and are supplied in 4 -foot (1219 mm) widths and 8 -foot (2438 mm) lengths. They are available in 1/4`+ 318_, 18, 7/1 6- 15/32-1 1/2 -119/32-1 5/8_, /8, 23/32-, 3/4_ 7/8 1- and 1'/e inch (6.4, 9.5, 11.1, 11.9, 12.7, 15.1, 15.9, 18.3, 19.1, 22, 25.4, and 28.E mm) thicknesses. The 19/3; inch and thicker combination subfloor/underlayment panels are available with tongue -and -groove edges. All panels must be installed with a minimum '/e inch (3.2 mm) gap along all panel edges and ends. Unless otherwise specified, the panel must be fastened with 6d common nails for thicknesses through 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), and 8d common nails for greater thicknesses. Nails must be spaced a maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on center along panel edges and 12 inches (305 mm) on center along intermediate supports, except for 48 -inch (1219 mm) spans where the maximum spacing is 6 inches (152 mm) on center along intermediate supports. In areas where the design wind speed specified by the 1997 Uniform Building Code TM (UBC) is greater than 80 mph, the designer must investigate the need for denser nailing patterns on roof sheathing. Fasteners roust be placed with a minimum panel edge distance of'/, inch (9.5 mm). A3/; inch(19.1 mm) expansion joint with separate framing members must be provided at intervals that preclude continuous sections of panels exceeding 80 feet (24 384 mm) in length. A'/ inch (12.7 mm) gap must be provided between the panel edge and concrete or masonry walls. Cut-outs must be oversized for plumbing and electrical systems, to avoid tight -fitting contact between piping or conduit and cut-out panel edges. The L -P oriented strand board panels have been evaluated in accordance with the American Plywood Association (APA) PRP -108, "Performance Standards and Policies for Structural Use Panels" (ER -5681) as: 1. APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor 2. APA Rated Sheathing 3. APA Structural I Rated Sheathing 4. APA Rated Siding The panels are permitted to be used in horizontal diaphragms to resist wind and seismic forces when they are installed in accordance with Table 1. The unblocked diaphragm values shown in Table 1 also apply to assemblies with panels having tongue -and -groove joints along the longitudinal panel edges. Structural -use panels are used as roof and wall sheathing. 2.2 Roof Sheathing: L -P oriented strand board panels are available as Rated Sheathing and Structural I Rated Sheathing. When used as roof sheathing, the panels must be protected by an approved roof covering material. The panels are manufactured with roof span ratings of 16, 20, 24, 32, 40 and 48 inches (406, 508, 610, 813, 1016, and 1219 mm). The allowable live loads applied to the panels are described in Tables 2 and 3, and the allowable dead load is 10 pounds per square foot (0.479 kN/m2). All panels must have edge support and span and load conditions as indicated in Tables 2 and 3, and must be installed over two or more spans with the long panel dimension perpendicular to supports (except as provided in Table 3). Except as noted in Section 2.1, roof sheathing panels must be fastened with 8d common nails for thicknesses through 1 inch (25.4 mm). 2.3 Wali Sheathing: L -P oriented strand board panels are available as Rated Sheathing and Structural I Rated Sheathing. The panels are manufactured with wall sheathing span ratings of 24 inches (610 mm). When used as wall sheathing, panels identified as Exposure 1 are considered water -repellant panel sheathing under Section 1402.1 of the UBC and must be covered with an approved exterior wall covering complying with the UBC. When the panels are used in lieu of continuous diagonal braces, panels shall be installed in accordance with Section 2320.11.3 of the UBC. All horizontal joints must have 2 - inch -by -4 -inch (51 mm by 102 mm) solid blocking. Nails must be spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center at panel edges supported by framing, and 12 inches (305 mm) on center at other supports. Maximum allowable racking shear loads are indicated in Table 4. 2.4 Combination Subfloor/Underlayment: L -P Sturd-I-Floor panels used as combination subfloor/underlayment must not exceed the support spacing and loads indicated in Table 5. Panels intended for use under nontextile -resilient flooring must be covered with a '/,-inch (6.4 mm) minimum thickness of underlayment. If panels are square -edged and resilient floor covering is to be applied directly, panel edges must be supported by 2 -inch -thick (51 mm) lumber blocking. Where panels are covered with a '/4 inch -thick (6.4 mm) underlayment or have tongue -and -groove edges, blocking is not required, unless it is required by Table 1. 2.5 Stair Treads: L -P 23/32 -inch (18.3 mm) and thicker OSB panels labeled APA Series N-120, are permitted for use as stair treads spanning a maximum of 45 inches (1143 mm) between stringers. Stair tread width must not exceed 12 inches (305 mm) between risers. The panels must be supported at both front and back by a full-length riser fabricated from any available APA panel grade at least 19/32 inch (15.1 mm) thick and fastened with 8d common nails. The treads must be nailed to the front riser with 8d common nails spaced a maximum of 12 inches (305 mm) on center. The back riser must extend down flush with, or past, the bottom tread and must be nailed to the treads with 8d common nails spaced a maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on center through the center of the tread. To reduce splitting, 3/32 inch (2.38 mm) holes must be predrilled on site at mid -thickness of the treads at locations receiving nails. In addition to nailing, gluing is permitted. 2.6 SmartSystem Siding: 2.6.1 General: L -P SmartSystem sidings area composite product consisting of an engineered wood substrate containing zinc borate, bonded to a phenolic resin - saturated, primed paper overlay with glue line. The overlay is embossed during the manufacturing process with a smooth or simulated rough -sawn cedar texture. A sealer is applied during the manufacturing process to all edges. The panels are %,'/,s, or 19/32 inch (9.5, 11.1, or 15.1 mm) thick and are manufactured in accordance with the approved quality control manual. SmartSystem siding is produced as SmartLap and SmartPanel siding configurations. 2.6.2 SmartLap Siding: SmartLap siding is a lap siding available in widths of 6, 8, 02 and 12 inches (152, 203, 241 and 305 mm), and thicknesses of % and '/,, inch (9.5 and 11.1 mm). The siding is attached directly to framing members spaced a maximum of 24 inches (610 mm) on center or over one of the following nailable sheathings: 1. Nominal 1 -inch (25.4 mm) boards with studs a maximum of 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 2. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of 24 inches (610 mm) or greater, with the long dimension placed either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 3. Sheathing panels with a roof -span rating of less than 24 inches (610 mm), with the long dimension placed either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of 16 inches (406 mm) on center. All installations of SmartLap siding must be backed by a weather -resistive barrier as required by the UBC. Openings in, penetrations through, and terminations of the SmartSystem sidings are outside the scope of this report and must be specifically approved by the building official in accordance with the UBC. SmartLap sidingjoints must be staggered over successive courses. For installation without nailable sheathing, lap siding joints must occur over stud locations. SmartLap siding must be attached with top nailing in which the nails are installed in the following manner: SmartLap Siding: Nails must be placed at the top of the lap siding panel, % inch (19.1 mm) down from the upper edge. Each successive course of lap siding must overlap a minimum of 1 inch (25.4 mm). Self -aligning SmartLap Siding: Nails must be placed at the top of the SmartLap siding panel, '/2 inch (12.7 mm) down from the upper edge. Each successive course of lap siding must rest on the back rabbet and must self -align at an overlap of 73/16 inch (20.64 mm). Fasteners must be corrosion -resistant. Nails attaching lap siding must be 8d box nails. Nails must penetrate the solid wood framing a minimum of 11/2 inches (38 mm). Nails attaching the SmartLap siding to nailable sheathing must be spaced at 8 inches (203 mm) on center, maximum, along the top edge of the siding and must also penetrate the sheathing and framing at each stud location a minimum of 1'/2 inches (38 mm). Installation of SmartLap siding on studs spaced 24 inches (610 mm) on center is limited to maximum building heights of 40 feet (12 192 mm) in Exposure C locations where the basic wind speed does not exceed 110 mph (177 km/h). Where the wind speed exceeds 90 mph (145 km/h), siding greater than 6 inches (152 mm) in width installed on studs 24 inches (610 mm) on center, or siding greater than 8 inches (203 mm) installed on studs 16 inches (406 mm) on center, must be fastened by either top nailing or conventional nailing, using two nails per stud for each piece of siding for a distance within 10 percent of the width of the narrow side of the building from the wall corners. 2.6.3 SmartPanel Siding: SmartPanel siding is 4 feet (1219 mm) wide and 4 feet to 18 feet (1219 mm to 5486 mm) in length. SmartPanel Siding is available in 3/8 inch, '/,,-inch and '9/12 -inch (9.5 mm, 11.1 mm and 15.1 mm) thicknesses. The 3/8- and'/,s inch -thick (9.5 and 15.1 mm) panels have a minimum groove thickness of 0.240 inch (6.1 mm) and a minimum shiplap thickness of 0.188 inch (4.8 mm). The 99/32inch-thick (15.1 mm) panels have a minimum groove thickness of 0.320 inch (8.1 mm) and a minimum shiplap thickness of 0.212 inch (5.4 mm). SmartPanels must be installed either directly to framing members or over one of the following nailable sheathings: 1. Nominal 1 -inch -thick (25.4 mm) boards with studs a maximum of 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 2. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of 24 inches (610 mm) or greater, with the long dimension placed either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of less than 24 inches (610 mm), with the long dimension placed either parallel or perpendicular to studs a maximum of 16 inches (406 mm) on center. SmartPanel siding must be installed with its long dimension oriented vertically. The'/,s inch -thick (11.1 mm) panel siding must be fastened to framing members with 6d box nails. The '9/,, -inch -thick (15.1 mm) panel siding must be fastened to framing members with 8d box nails. Nails must penetrate wood framing a minimum of 1'/2 inches (38 mm). Fasteners must be corrosion -resistant. When SmartPanel siding is applied directly to the framing, the maximum spacing of the framing must be consistent with the span rating of the SmartPanel siding, which is indicated on the panel's label. SmartPanel siding installed either directly to framing or over nailable sheathing, with the nails spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center % inch (9.5 mm) in from panel edges and 12 inches (305 mm) on center at intermediate supports spaced 16 inches (406 mm) on center, is limited to maximum building heights of 40 feet (12 192 mm), in Exposure C locations, where the basic wind speed does not exceed 90 mph (141 km/h). Where the basic wind speed exceeds 90 mph (141 km/h) but does not exceed 110 mph (177 km/h), and studs are spaced 211 inches (610 mm) on center, the panel siding must be attached to intermediate supports with the nails spaced a maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on center. Four -foot -by -eight -foot (1219 mm by 2438 mm) SmartPanel siding installed vertically, directly to framing, with a single row of nails penetrating both laps [nails spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center at panel edges and 12 inches (305 mm) on center at intermediate supports], is an alternative to the wall bracing requirements for conventional wood frame construction specified in the UBC for applications not requiring structural analysis. Minimum coverage area must be as set forth in the UBC for structural wood panels. The nails required for'/,, -inch -thick (11.1 mm) panels are 6d box nails. Mails used to attach 19/32 -inch -thick (15.1 mm) panels are 8d box nails. Shear values for panels applied directly to studs must be no greater than those noted in Table 4. All SmartPanel joints must occur atframing members and must be protected with a continuous wood batt, approved caulking, flashing, or vertical or horizontal shiplap; or otherwise must be made waterproof. When the SmartPanel siding is installed over an approved foam plastic sheathing up to 1 inch (25.4 mm) in thickness, the siding must be fastened with galvanized box nails of sufficient size to provide 1'/, -inch (38 mm) penetration into the framing. 2.7 Installation: Louisiana-Pacific Corporation's oriented strand board roof and wall sheathing, combination subfloor/underlayment, and stair treads must be installed in accordance with the provisions of the UBC and the requirements of this report. Louisiana-Pacific Corporation SmartLap Siding and SmartPanel Siding must be installed in accordance with the requirements of this report and in accordance with the Louisiana-Pacific Corporation "Application Instructions for SmartLap and SmartPanel Siding." 2.8 Identification: All Louisiana-Pacific Corporation oriented strand board OSB panels, stair treads and sidings are labeled with the product name, and bear the stamp of the quality control agency (APA—The Engineered Wood Association) (see Figure 1.) The stamp contains the following information: 1. Mill number. 2. Evaluation report number (ICBG ES ER -5905). 3. Reference to APR's "Performance Standards and Policies for Structural -Use Panels" (PRP -108). 4. Grade/exposure. 5. Span rating. 6. Panel thickness (in fractions of an inch). 3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED Data in accordance with UBC Standard 23-3; reports of fastener tests; structural calculations; installation instructions; and a quality control manual. 4.0 FINDINGS That the Louisiana-Pacific Corporation Oriented Strand Board Panels, Stair Treads and Sidings described in this report comply with the 9997 Uniform Building Code TM (UBC), subject to the following conditions: 4.1 Installation of the OSIS sheathing and underlayment, stair treads, and SmartSystem sidings must comply with this report and the UBC. 4.2 SmartLap siding is not used as an alternative to bracing requirements specified in the UBC. 4.3 Panels subjected to fire -retardant treatment are outside the scope of this report. 4.4 In areas where seismic analysis is required by the UBC, the appropriate sections of the code for wood structural panel diaphragms and shearwalls must be consulted for additional detailing requirements, restrictions concerning certain usages, required modifications to the allowable shear loads tabulated in this report, and additional inspection requirements. 4.5 The products are manufactured in Newberry, Michigan; Two Harbors, Minnesota; Tomahawk, Wisconsin; and Silsbee, Texas, under a quality control program with inspections by APA—The Engineered Wood Association (AA -649). This report is subject to reexamination in one year.
