Iv. r 7 J m Aram - HEATING A COOLING Product 58DXA Data -4 '+ Deluxe Downflow Gas Furnace 40,000 — 100,000 Btuh Output 1990 A milestone in heating efficiency and economy Carrier presents the 58DXA — This downflow condensing furnace is superb for low operating cost and maximum energy savings. The 58DXA is a technically advanced furnace that has been designed and engineered to provide the owner with highly dependable, efficient, and economical heating. The design goal was accomplished in several ways. First, the 58DXA Furnace uses a pilot relite system to eliminate wasteful gas usage — a common characteristic of older furnaces with continuous pilot. The pilot burns only during the heating cycle to ignite the burners that heat the serpentine heat exchanger. Then the 58DXA uses induced combustion to increase the heat transfer that occurs inside the furnace. The induced combustion system is a sealed system which uses 100% outdoor air for combustion. Since the combustion air is piped directly into the furnace, infiltration of outside air into home to support combustion is eliminated. This precludes cold drafts in the house and improves living comfort. Additionally, this isolates the noise of operation to make the 58DXA Furnace one of the quietest in the industry. The final touch is the special Serpentuff- secondary heat exchanger that extracts most of the remaining heat that is available in the furnace to heat the house. The result is economical and comfortable heating with an AFUE exceeding 90%. The Serpentuff- secondary heat exchanger is a special design of the serpetine clam -shell heat exchanger. This design reduces Form 58DXA•1PD pressure drop in the furnace and minimizes the risk of airflow blockage from a dirty coil as experienced by competitive products. The 58DXA Furnace is easy to install. At only 46-3/16 inches tall, it can be conveniently applied in a new or replacement application. The furnace has left- or right-hand gas, vent pipe, combustion -air pipe connections, and adjustable blower speeds to fit most applications. Carrier makes it easy to adjust the blower speed with a speed -tap selector located on the blower housing. No need to remove the blower or perform other complex procedures. When using a Carrier gas furnace, you have the option of expanding your comfort system to include air conditioning, humidifier, and electronic air cleaner. A factory - installed 40 -VA transformer, air conditioner relay, and multispeed blower motor simplifies installation of add-on options. The 58DXA Downflow Condensing Furnace heat exchangers are backed by Carrier's limited lifetime Warranty. See your Dealer or Distributor for more details. 2 58DXA FEATURES/ BENEFITS Insulated Blower Compartment — The acoustical insulation reduces air and motor noise to promote quiet operation. Certifications — The 58DXA units are A.G.A. design certified for use with natural or propane gas. Field conversion to propane is required. The efficiency is GAMA efficiency rating certified. The 58DXA surpasses California minimum seasonal efficiency requirements, and meets the oxides of nitrogen (NOJ emission levels set by South Coast and Bay Area Air Quality Management Districts in California. Side Wall Venting — The combustion -air and vent pipes can terminate through a side wall or through the roof when used with a factory -authorized vent termination kit. Blower Door Switch — Shuts off all power and fuel to furnace whenever blower door is opened. Redundant Gas Valve —Shuts off gas to burners if one of the valves (pilot or main gas) fails to close completely for any reason. Insulation — Foil -faced insulation in heat exchanger section of the casing minimizes heat loss. Printed -Circuit Board — Controls sequencing and furnace operation. Solid-state blower control actuates blower after main burners ignite, to eliminate cold air blowing into rooms. Adjustable Blower Speed — For precise airflow selection. Direct Vent Sealed Combustion System — Model 58DXA uses 100% outdoor air, which results in especially quiet operation. Direct venting also minimizes the possibility of chloride contamination which can result in heat exchanger corrosion. Also reduces air infiltration into the home. Monoport Burners — The burners are finely tuned for smooth, quiet combustion plus economical gas usage. Serpentuff- — Exclusive Serpentuff- coating, a patented (No. 4,738,307) microthin polyproplene laminate used on the secondary heat exchanger. Compressor Start Assist—PTC Type Solid state electrical device which gives a "soft" boost to the compressor at each start-up. SUGGESTED USE: - Installations with marginal power supply. Replacement installations with rapid pressure balance (RPB) expansion valve on indoor coil. Replacement installations with undersized interconnecting refrigerant tubes. 8. Compressor Start Assist—Capacitor/Relay Type Start capacitor and start relay gives "hard" boost to compressor motor at each start-up. SUGGESTED USE: Installations where interconnecting tube length exceeds 50 -ft. Installations where outdoor design temperature exceeds 105°F (40.61C). Replacement installations with hard shut-off expansion valve on indoor coil. 9. Crankcase Heater An electric resistance heater which mounts to the base of the compressor to keep the lubricant warm during off cycles. Improves compressor lubrication on restart and minimizes chance of refrigerant slugging. May or may not include a thermostat control. SUGGESTED USE: When interconnecting tube.length exceeds 50 -ft. When unit will be operated below 55°F (12.8°C) outdoor air temperature. (Use with LOW AMBIENT OPERATION KIT Item 2) • All commercial installations. 10. Sound Blanket/Shield/Hood Wrap around sound attenuation cover for the compressor. Reduces the sound level by about 0.2 bels. SUGGESTED USE: Unit installed closer than 15 -ft to quiet areas—bedrooms, etc. Unit installed between two houses less than 10 -ft apart. 11. Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) Kits A modulating flow control valve which meters refrigerant liquid flow rate into the evaporator in response to the superheat of the refrigerant gas leaving the evapo- rator. Kit includes valve, adapter tubes and external equalizer tube. Both hard shut off and RPB type valves are available. SUGGESTED USE: For improved system performance in cooling mode for certain combinations of indoor and outdoor units. (Refer to ARI Unitary Directory) 12. Refrigerant Low Pressure Switch Auto reset SPST switch activated by refrigerant pressure on low side of refrigerant circuit. Cycles compressor off if refrigerant'pressure drops to about 27 psig. Prevents indoor coil freeze-up due to loss of indoor air flow. Also, provides additional protection against compressor damage due to loss of refrigerant charge. To prevent rapid compressor recycling, COMPRESSOR SHORT CYCLE PROTECTOR (Item 6) can be used with this switch. SUGGESTED USE: Where indoor coil is exposed to "dirty' air. All commercial installations. 13. Refrigerant High,Pressure Switch Auto reset SPST switch activated by refrigerant pressure on high side of refrigerant circuit. Cycles compressor off if refrigerant pressure rises to about 400 psig. Provides additional protection against compressor damage due to loss of outdoor air flow. To prevent rapid compressor recycling, COMPRESSOR SHORT CYCLE PROTECTOR (Item 6) can be used with this switch. SUGGESTED USE: Installations exposed to very "dirty" outdoor air. Installations where condenser inlet air temperature exceeds 125°F (51.70C). 14. Refrigerant Filter Drier A device for removing contaminants from refrigerant circulating in an air conditioner; one direction flow for air conditioners. SUGGESTED USE: All field connected split system air conditioners. 15. Support Feet Four stick -on plastic feet which raise the unit 4 inches above the mounting pad. This allows sand, dirt and other debris to be flushed from the unit base; minimizes corrosion. SUGGESTED USE: Coastal installations. Windy areas or where debris is normally circulating. Rooftop installations. ®UNITED TECHNOLOGIES CARRIER Carrier Corporation • Syracuse, New York 13221 8-89 Manufacturer reserves the right to discontinue, or change at any time, specifications or designs without notice and without Incurring obligations. Intended for outdoor installation with free air inlet and outlet Outdoor fan external static pressure available is less than 0.01 -ins. water column. 2. Minimum outdoor operating air temperature without low ambient operation accessory is 55°F (12.8°C). 3. Maximum outdoor operating air temperature is 125°F (51.71C). 4. For reliable operation, unit should be level in all horizontal planes. 5. Maximum elevation of indoor coil above or below base of outdoor unit is: indoor coil above = 50 -ft. Indoor coil below = 150 -ft. (See items 6 and 7 following). 6. For interconnecting refrigerant tube lengths greater than 50 -ft, consult long tube application bulletin available from equipment distributor. 7. Crankcase heater required when interconnecting refrigerant tube length exceeds 50 -ft. 8. Not more than 3 -ft of refrigerant tube should be buried in the ground. If necessary to bury tubes under a sidewalk, provide a minimum 6 -in. vertical rise to the valve connections at the unit. 9. Use only copper wire for electric connection at unit. Aluminum and clad aluminum are not acceptable for the type of connector provided. 10. Mixmatches of indoor coil capacity more than one size larger than outdoor unit capacity may result in inadequate indoor comfort. Accessory Description and Usage 1. Indoor Time Delay Relay A SPST delay relay which briefly continues operation of the indoor blower motor to provide additional cooling after the compressor cycles off. SUGGESTED USE: For improved efficiency ratings for certain combinations of indoor and outdoor units. (Refer to ARI Unitary Directory) 2. Motormaster—Low Ambient Operation Kit This solid state head pressure controller is a fan speed control device activated by a temperature sensor. It is specifically designed to control outdoor fan motor speed in response to saturated condensing temperature. For outdoor air temperatures between 55° and 0°F (12.8° and — 17.8°C), it maintains condensing temperature at 100°F + / — 10°F (37.80 + / — 50C). For single phase units a ball bearing fan motor is also required. SUGGESTED USE: Cooling operation at outdoor temperatures below 55°F (12.80C). All commercial installations. 3. Ball Bearing Fan Motor A fan motor with ball bearings which permits speed reduction while maintaining bearing lubrication. SUGGESTED USE: Required on all single phase units where LOW AMBIENT OPERATION KIT (Item 2) has been added. 4. Winter Start Control A SPST delay relay which bypasses the low pressure switch for approximately 3 minutes to permit start up for cooling operation under low load conditions. SUGGESTED USE: All air conditioners which have low pressure switch and where LOW AMBIENT OPERATION KIT (Item 2) has been added. 5. Evaporator Freeze Thermostat A SPST temperature actuated switch which stops unit operation when evaporator reaches freeze-up conditions. SUGGESTED USE: All units where WINTER START CONTROL (Item 4) has been added. 6. Time Guard 11—Compressor Short Cycle Protector Solid state timing device which prevents compressor rapid recycling. Control provides an approximate 5 -minute delay after power to the compressor has been interrupted for any reason, including normal room thermostat cycling. If other than 25 -ft (7.62m) of tubing is used and/or indoor unit is located above outdoor unit, a slight variation in capacity may occur. tTotal and sensible capacities are net capacities. Blower motor heat has been subtracted. $Sensible capacities shown are based on 80°F (20°C) entering air at the indoor coil. For sensible capacities at other than 80°F (200C), deduct • 835 Btuh (245 KW) per 1000 Cfm (480 US) of indoor coil air for each degree below 80°F (200C), or add 835 Btuh (245 KW) per 1000 Cfm (480 US) of indoor coil air per degree above 80°F (201C). When the required data falls between the published data, interpolation may be performed.
