I inspected each web member and the plate connection area of each truss. Utility.grade material was used on web members intermittently, but in each case. the wood had sufficient consistency, strength and density to support the stresses used in the truss design. It is my opinion the utility grade webbing used in this instance is satisfactory and will support the loads imposed. Oroville, CA Dear Steve: I am writing in regards to.the trusses we furnished Gary Amerine at 35 Twin Pines in Magalia. By mistake, we had used some utility 2 x 4 lumber in the webbing of the trusses. The County Building Inspector caught the error when he made the frame inspection. At that time, the inspector stated that the utility looked better than the stud grade lumber. He told Mr. Amerine to get engineering to show that it was alright to have the utility lumber in the trusses. I, in turn, obtained a statement from the engineer that the utility lumber was alright in that truss up to 24' span. I was informed later that you would not accept this. When I called you about the problem, you told me that you would not accept anything with utility lumber in it, but you would accept the nailing of a 2 x 4 on the side of the webb member. I then sent a man to the job to nail on the 2 x 41s. He discovered that the house was finished and that the attic was all insulated. In view of the fact that the inspector let construction continue on the basis of no field repair with the intent that he would accept an engineers,approval, I feel that you should accept the trusses as they are. Going into the attic at this time and nailing on the 2 x 4's will do more harm than good. The 419" B webb in question is a compression member and according to the Western Wood Products Association; construction, stud, utility and standard grade lumber all have the same compression rating. The 1110" C webb has a tension of 122 lbs in this 24, truss, and according to the Western Wood Products 'Association, utility lumber has a tension value of 175 lbs. per square inch, making the tension value of a 2 x 4 918 lbs. Also the trusses were built for a 30 lb. snow load and your requirements are for only 16 lb.'live load on the top chord.
