The strands in the surface layers of the panels are oriented along the length of the panels while the strands in the core of the panels are oriented randomly or along the width of the pan- els. The strands are bonded together by a heated pressure - forming process in accordance with the approved quality control manual referenced in Section 6.2 of this evaluation report. The panels have a density of approximately 40 pcf (640 kg/m3) and are supplied in 4 -foot (1219 mm) widths and 8 -foot (2438 mm) lengths. They are available in 1/4, 3/8, 7/16, 15/32, 1/2, 19/32, 5/8, 23/32, 3/4, 7/8, 1 and 1 -1 /8 inch (6.4, 9.5, 11.1, 11.9, 12.7, 15.1, 15.9, 18.3, 19.1, 22, 25.4, and 28.6 mm) thicknesses. The 19/32, 5/8, 23/32, 3/4, 7/8, 1 and 1-1/8 inch (15.1, 15.9, 18.3, 19.1, 22, 25.4, and 28.6 mm) thicknesses of combination subfloor/underlayment panels are available with tongue and groove edges. All panels shall be installed with a minimum 1/8 -inch (3.2 mm) gap along all panel edges and ends. Unless otherwise specified, the panel shall be fastened with 6d common nails for thicknesses through 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) and 8d for great- er thicknesses. Nails shall be spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center along panel edges and 12 inches (305 mm) on center along intermediate supports, except for 48 -inch (1219 mm) spans where the maximum spacing is 6 inches (152 mm) on center along intermediate supports. In areas where the de- sign wind speed specified by the applicable code is greater than 80 mph, the designer shall investigate the need for denser nailing patterns on roof sheathing. Fasteners shall be placed with a minimum panel edge distance of 3/8 inch (9.5 mm). A 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) expansion joint with separate framing members shall be provided at intervals that preclude contin- uous sections of'panels exceeding 80 feet (24 384 mm) in length. A 1/2 -inch (12.7 mm) gap shall be provided between the panel edge and concrete or masonry walls. Cutouts shall be oversized for plumbing and electrical systems to avoid tight fitting contact between piping or conduit and cut out panel edges. Oriented strand board panels have been evaluated in accordance with the American Plywood Association (APA) PRP -108; "Performance Standards and Policies for Struc- tural -Use Panels" (NER-108) as: 1. APA Rated Sturd-I-Floor 2. APA Rated Sheathing 3. APA Structural I Rated Sheathing 4. APA Rated Siding The panels are permitted to be used in horizontal dia- phragms to resist wind and seismic forces when installed in accordance with Table 1. The unblocked values shown in Table 1 also apply to assemblies with panels having tongue and groove joints along the longitudinal panel edges. Struc- tural use panels are used as roof and wall sheathing. 3.2 ROOF SHEATHING Oriented strand board panels are available as Rated Sheathing and Structural I Rated Sheathing. The panels. used as roof sheathing, shall be protected by an approved roof covering material. The panels are manufactured with roof span ratings of 16, 20, 24, 32, 40 and 48 inches (406. 508, 610, 813, 1016, and 1219 mm). All panels shall have edge support, span and load conditions as indicated in Tables 2 and 3. They shall be installed over two or more spans with the long panel di- mension perpendicular to supports except as provided in Table 3. Roof sheathing panels shall be fastened with 8d common nails for thicknesses through 1 inch (25.4 mm). 3.3 WALL SHEATHING Oriented strand board panels are Rated Sheathing and Structural I Rated Sheathing. The panels are manufactured with wall sheathing span ratings of 24 inches (610 mm). Pan- els identified as Exposure 1, used as wall sheathing, are considered water -repellant panel sheathing under the code and shall be covered with an approved exterior wall covering complying with the code. When panels are used in lieu of let -in corner bracing, all hori- zontal joints shall have 2 -inch -by -4 -inch (51 mm by 102 mm) solid.blocking. Panels 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) and less shall be fastened with 6d common nails; 8d common nails shall be used for thicker panels. Nails shall be spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center at panel edges supported by framing and 12 inches (305 mm) on center at other supports. Maximum allowable racking shear loads are indicated in Table 4. 3.4 COMBINATION SUBFLOOR/UNDERLAYMENT Sturd-I-Floor panels used as combination subfloor/under- layment shall not exceed the support spacing and loads indi- cated in Table 5. Panels intended for use under nontextile -resilient flooring shall be covered with 1/4 -inch (6.4 mm) minimum thickness underlayment. If panels.are square edged and resilient floor covering is to be applied directly, panel edges shall be sup- ported by 2 -inch -thick (51 mm) lumber blocking. Where pan- els are covered with a 1/4 -inch -thick (6.4 mm) underlayment or have tongue -and -groove edges, blocking is not required, except -if required by Table 1. 3.5 STAIR TREADS Louisiana-Pacific 23/32 -inch (18.3 mm) and thicker OSB panels labeled APA Series N-120 are permitted for use as stair treads spanning a maximum of 45 inches (1143 mm) between stringers. Stair tread width shall not exceed 12 inches (305 mm) between risers. The panels shall be sup- ported at both front and back by a full length riser fabricated from any available APA panel grade at least 19/32 inch (15.1 mm) thick and fastened with 8d common nails. The treads shall be nailed to the front riser with 8d common nails spaced a maximum of 12 inches (305 mm) on center. The back riser shall extend down flush with, or past, the bottom tread and shall be nailed to the treads with 8d common nails spaced a maximum of 6 inches (152 mm) on center through the center of the tread. To reduce splitting, 3/32 -inch (2.38 mm) holes shall be predrilled on site at mid -thickness of the treads at locations receiving nails. In addition to nailing, gluing is per- mitted. 3.6 SMARTSYSTEM SIDING SmartSystem sidings are a composite product consisting of an engineered wood substrate containing zinc borate, bonded to a phenolic resin -saturated, primed paper overlay with glue line. The overlay is embossed during the manufac- turing process with a smooth or simulated rough -sawn cedar texture. A sealer is applied during the manufacturing pro- cess to all edges. The panels are 5/16, 7/16, or 19/32 inch (7.9, 11.1, or 15.1 mm) thick and are manufactured in accordance with the approved quality control manual refer- NER-124 enced in Section 6.2 of this evaluation report. Siding is pro- duced as SmartLap and SmartPanel siding configurations: 3.6.1 SmartLap Siding SmartLap siding is available in widths of 6, 8, 9-1/2 and 12 inches (152, 203, 241 and 305 mm), and thicknesses of 5/16 and 7/16 inches (7.9 and 11.1 mm). The siding is attached directly to framing members spaced a maximum of 24 inches (610 mm) on center or over one of the following nailable sheathings: 1. Nominal 1 inch (25.4 mm) boards with studs 16 or 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 2. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of 24 inches (610 mm) or greater, with the long dimension placed ei- ther parallel or perpendicular to studs 16 or 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 3. Sheathing panels with a roof -span rating of less than 24 inches (610 mm), with the long dimension placed either parallel or perpendicular to studs 16 inches (406 mm) on center. All installations of SmartLap siding shall be backed by a weather -resistive barrier as required by the applicable build- ing code. Openings in, penetration through, and termina- tions of the SmartSystem sidings are outside the scope of this report and shall be specifically approved by the code offi- cial in accordance with the applicable code. SmartLap siding joints shall be staggered over successive courses. For installation without nailable sheathing, lap sid- ing joints shall occur over stud locations. SmartLap siding shall be attached with top nailing in which the nails are installed in the following manner: SmartLap Siding: Nails shall be placed at the top of the lap siding panel, 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) down from the upper edge. Each successive course of lap siding shall overlap a mini- mum of 1 inch (25.4 mm). Self -aligning SmartLap Siding: Nails shall be placed at the top of the SmartLap siding panel, 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) down from the upper edge. Each successive course of lap siding shall rest on the back rabbet and shall self align at an overlap of 13/16 inch (20.64 mm). Fasteners shall be corrosion resistant. Nails attaching lap siding directly to framing shall be 8d box nails. Nails shall penetrate the solid wood framing a minimum of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm). Nails attaching the SmartLap siding to nailable sheathing shall be spaced at 8 inches (203 mm) on center maximum, along the top edge of the siding. The nails used to fasten the siding shall be 8d box nails. Nails used to attach lap siding to sheathing shall also penetrate the sheathing and framing at each stud location a minimum of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm). In areas using the Uniform Building Code, installation of SmartLap siding on studs spaced 24 inches (610 mm) on center is limited to maximum building heights of 40 feet (12 192 mm) in Exposure Category C locations where the basic wind speed does not exceed 110 mph (177 km/h). Where the wind speed exceeds 90 mph (145 km/h), siding greater than 6 inches (152 mm) in width installed on studs 24 inches (610 mm) on center, or siding greater toan 8 inches (203 mm) installed on studs 16 inches (406 mm) on center, shall be fastened by either top nailing or conventional nail- ing, using two nails per stud for each piece of siding for a dis- tance within 10 percent of the width of the narrow side of the building from the wall corners. In areas using the BOCA National Building Code and Stand- ard Building Code, SmartLap siding is permitted for applica- Page 3 of 8 tions where the negative wind pressure does not exceed 43 psf (2 kN/m2), calculated in accordance with the applicable code for components and cladding. The minimum specific gravity of the wood studs is 0.55, such as southern pine. 3.6.2 SmartPanel Siding SmartPanel sidings are 4 feet (1219 mm) wide, 4 feet to 18 feet (1219 mm to 5486 mm) in length. SmartPanel Siding is available in .7/16 -inch and 19/32 -inch (11.1 mm and 15.1 mm) thicknesses. The 7/16 -inch -thick (15.1 mm) panels have a minimum groove thickness of 0.240 inch (6.1 mm) and a minimum shiplap thickness of 0.188 inch (4.8 mm). The 19/32 -inch -thick (15.1 mm) panels have a minimum groove thickness of 0.320 inch (8.1 mm) and a minimum shi- plap thickness of 0.212 inch (5.4 mm). SmartPanels shall be installed either directly to framing members or over one of the following nailable sheathing: 1. Nominal 1 -inch -thick (25.4 mm) boards with studs 16 or 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 2. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of 24 inches (610 mm) or greater, with the long dimension placed ei- ther parallel or perpendicular to studs 16 or 24 inches (406 or 610 mm) on center. 3. Sheathing panels with a roof span rating of less than 24 inches (610 mm), with the long dimension placed either parallel or perpendicular to studs 16 inches (406 mm) on center. SmartPanel siding shall be installed with its long dimension oriented vertically. The 7/16 -inch -thick (11.1 mm) panel sid- ing shall be fastened to framing members with 6d box nails. The 19/32 -inch -thick (15.1 mm) panel siding shall be fas- tened to framing members with 8d box nails. Nails shall penetrate wood framing a minimum of 1-1/2 inches (38 mm). Fasteners shall be corrosion resistant. When SmartPanel siding is applied directly to the framing, the maximum spacing of the framing shall be consistent with the span rating of the SmartPanel siding, which is located on the panel's label. In areas using the Uniform Building Code, SmartPanel sid- ing installed either directly to framing or over nailable sheath- ing, with the nails spaced 6 inches (152 mm) on center 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) in from panel edges and 12 inches (305 mm) on center at intermediate supports spaced 16 inches (406 mm) on center, is limited to maximum building heights of 40 feet (12 192 mm), in Exposure Category C locations, where the basic wind speed does not exceed 90 mph (141 km/h). Where the wind speed exceeds 90 mph (141 km/h), but does not exceed 110 mph (177 km/h), and studs are spaced 24 inches (610 mm) on center, the panel siding shall be at- tached to intermediate supports with the nails spaced 6 inch- es (152 mm) on center, maximum. In areas using the BOCA National Building Code and Stand- ard Building Code, SmartPanel siding is permitted for ap- plications where the negative wind pressure, as calculated in accordance with the appropriate code for components and cladding, does not exceed 37 psf (1.77 kN/m2), when using 6d box nails with wood studs having a minimum specific gravity of 0.55, e.g., southern pine. When using 8d box nails with studs having a minimum specific gravity of 0.55, panel siding is permitted for applications where the negative wind pressure does not exceed 43 psf (2.06 kN/m2), as calculated in accordance with the appropriate code for components and cladding. Four -foot -by -eight -foot (1219 mm by 2438 mm) panel siding installed vertically, directly to framing, with a single row of NER-124 nails penetrating both laps, nails spaced 6 inches on center at panel edges and 12 inches (305 mm) on center at inter- mediate supports, is an alternative to the wall bracing requirements for conventional wood frame construction specified in the applicable code for applications not requiring structural analysis. Minimum coverage area shall be as set forth by the applicable code for structural wood panels. The nails required for 7/16 -inch -thick (11.1 mm) panels are 6d box nails. Nails used to attach 19/32 -inch -thick (15.1 mm) panels are 8d box nails. Shear values for panels applied directly to studs shall be no greater than those noted in Table 4. All SmartPanel joints shall occur at framing members and shall be protected with a continuous wood batt, approved caulking, flashing, vertical or horizontal shiplap or otherwise made waterproof. When the SmartPanel siding is installed over an approved foam plastic sheathing up to 1 inch (25.4 mm) in thickness, the siding shall be fastened with galvanized box nails of suffi- cient size to provide 1-1/2 inch (38 mm) penetration into the framing. 4.0 INSTALLATION Louisiana-Pacific Corporation's oriented strand board roof and wall sheathing, combination subfloor/underlayment and stair treads shall be installed in accordance with the provi- sions of the applicable code and the requirements of this re- port as outlined in Section 3.0. Louisiana-Pacific Corporation's SmartLap Siding and SmartPanel Siding shall be installed in accordance with the requirements of this report as outlined in Section 3.0.
