F . ---------------' ' a I r I I 1 f fir,?A•. + Heliodyne Collector Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Guidelines These Guidelines are an integral part of the Manufacturer's Gobi Solar Collector Warranty. Noncompliance with these Guidelines will void the collector warranty. Heliodyne collectors are built of quality materials and assembled with care for continued service and durability to require a minimum of maintenance. Certain steps will assure continued satisfaction. Note: The factory fitted Wn-O-Seal unions to interconnect collectors are integral parts and not to be removed. Mating halt - unions, caps and complete unions are available from Heliodyne for all installation situations. Use four Helio-Clops per collector to attach to wood stringers, Unistrut, aluminum channel or other base; or, use Heliodyne flush or rack mount hardware. PREINSTALLATION STORAGE: When storing the collectors before installing, keep plastic sheet in between stacked collectors to avoid condensation forming on the aluminum backsheet of the bottom of the collectors. Condensation occurring will cause the solar glass to be stained, needing replacement. Follow the Heliodyne "Glass Replacement" guidelines in case of stains. Keep the collectors covered. HANDLING: Do not lift the collectors by their soft headers. The headers should also be protected from other damage. The solar glass cover is double strength tempered and highly Impact resistant and durable. However, scratching the glass cover should be avoided as it weakens the glass. Follow the Heliodyne "Glass Replacement' guidelines in case of accidental breakage. Heliodyne collectors nest and lock into each other for safe horizontal transportation without slippage and damage. Do not transport collectors upside down or standing on a side. COLLECTOR FILLING AND DRAINBACK SYSTEMS: Avoid thermal shock in absorber plate by filling system when collectors are hidden from direct sunlight. For drainback systems, Install a Heliodyne purchased or approved thermal limit switch to avoid collector failure due to shock and creep and to extend collector life. For maximum collector fife, use a Helio-Pak System. Failures of this kind may not be covered under warranty repairs, consult Heliodyne for more information. TILT AND ORIENTATION: Avoid shading of collectors by structures, chimneys or landscaping between the hours of at least 10 AM and 3 PM. Use reasonable rules for orientation and fift for assured performance. Use a minimum tilt of 10" in mild areas and 30" in areas with snow. If possible, face the collectors within 20" of true South (in the Northern Hemisphere). Use tilt equal latitude minus 5" for year-round hot water and latitude plus 150 for winter space heating. Use racks only when absolutely necessary. Never install collectors sideways drainback systems. In snow country, use a steep enough tilt to allow snow to slide off the collectors; avoid banking of snow and ice below or on the collectors and use trim between collectors (use the built-in trim groove integral to the collector). MINIMUM HEAT STORAGE: A minimum of 1.5 to 1.75 gallons of liquid heat storage is recommended per square foot of Gobi collector (e.g. 60-80 gallons per Gobi 410), the higher number in areas with more sun and heat. "Stagnation", meaning no-load, no -flow conditions on high output days, is to be minimized by using appropriate system sizing and maximizing year-round usage. For example, with an additional load such as a pool in summer, by adjusting tilts or other methods such as shunt loops or covering the collectors. Exceptions to these guidelines can apply when heavy day usage keeps up with solar energy output, as in many industrial applications, allowing minimal storage. INSTALLATION: The following guidelines will help insure trouble free operation: 1. In all cases, follow local building codes and regulations. 2. Consult the Heliodyne Flush Mount and Rads Mount instructions for collector attachment. 3. Use gg r pipe for collector feed and return lines even in low temperature applications (i.e. pools) due to high operation and stagnation temperatures of the collectors. Cast Iron piping is permitted in closed-loop glycol systems. Do W use galvanized pipe: It is not compatible with the high temperature or propylene glycol. 4. Supporting rggk should be in good condition before collector Installation. S. Stringers and racks must be securely attached to structural roof members or secured by blocidng inside the roof to withstand seismic, wind, snow and other environmental loads. Make sure all roof penetrations are flashed and sealed. 6. In installations depending on draining for freeze or boil -out protection such as drain -back water, pool or spa heating, collectors and lines must be sloped to permit draining of all fluid passages. Use a minimum collector tilt of 10° for mild areas and 30" for snow country. Never install Gobi sideways for drainback systems. 7. Use Hello-Clj(4 per collector) as transition pieces to all mounting hardware. Do not penetrate the collector frame. Allow space behind the collector for air circulation. Please consult Heliodyne Flush Mount and Rack Mountinstructfons. 8. Feed supply into bottom header and return from opposite top header of collector or collector array. Interconnect Gobi collector headers to each other by tightening the buift4n Dyn-O-Seal union halves after inserting the captive 0 -rings attached to each collector frame. Sub -manifold arrays of more than oW collectors. Divide the collectors into equal numbers per array and use reverse return plumbing or flow balancing valves to even out flow rates across all arrays. ® 2006 HEMODYNE; INC. COUNTY OWLDING DEPARTMEPIT r; . 9. Make sure to use the 0 -rings supplied (attached to collector frame) for the Dyn-0,Seal union connections and verify that they are property placed in the slots with the brass nut tightened securely. Do nM over -tighten or use any sealants on the union threads. 10. Keep debris away from all fluid passages. Thoroughly rinse the collector loop before filling to flush out flux, o0, grease, dirt, welding and pipe scale or other contaminant. A solution of 1-2% trisodium phosphate (TSP) can be use with water for flushing the system. Fill the system completely and circulate without adding head, then drain completely. Repeat until the water runs clear. Flush system free of TSP solution with water. 11. Pressure test before filling with the operating fluid. If water is used for pressure testing, watch out to prevent collector fling during cold weather. Remove the expansion tank(s) and reinstall after testing. RECOMMENDED FLOW RATE: Do not exceed recommended flow rates: 0.025 GPM to 0.075 GPM per square foot of collector (standard 1 GPM to a maximum of 3 GPM for a Gobi 410). ANITIFREEZE: A good antifreeze and closed-loop system design provides year-round protection in all areas. Use only Dyn-O-F10 HD propylene glycol high temperature fluid to 325°F with inhibitors in a 50/50 solution with water for collector protection and service life. Use of other fluids may void warranty. Water requirements are shown in the table below. Mineral Level Chlorides 25 ppm, max Sulfates 25 ppm, max Calcium' 50 ppm, max Magnesium' 50 ppm, max 'Calcium and magnesium expressed as ppm calcium carbonate. Total hardness as calcium carbonate should be less than 100 ppm. If the quality is not known, use distilled water. Household water can be used for priming ONLY, if necessary. Care must be taken that the Plj is in the range of 8 to 10. The reserve alkallnity. must be above zero at all times: a suitable range is 10 to 25. Monitor these levels gerlodicallvI Verify a no scale potential by calculating the Langelier Saturation Index, (LSI). An LSI below zero indicates no scale potential. Design all parts for 150 Asia to prevent boil out when system is stagnating. Consult Heliodyne Helio-Pak closecHgoo system Manuals. WATER: Plain tap water may be used in the all -copper absorbers of the Gobi collectors. Water containing suitable inhibitors and buffers (as recommended by their manufacturers) may be used with copper. Satt water or any solutions containing salt water may not be used. See the above `ANTIFREEZE heading for water composition guidelines. 1. Do not use aggressive pitting water or scaling water. Scale deposits reduce collector efficiency and could plug passages. Verify there is no scale potential by calculating the LSI. If the available water supply is scaling water, use a Heliodyne Helio-Pak closed-loop system. 2. Verify the water pH is above 7.5 to avoid pipe corrosion. 3. Do not allow collectors containing water to freezewhich will rupture the fluid passages. Protect the collectors with a closed-loop antifreeze system in freezing areas. 4. In non pressurized systems, such as drain -back s tys ems. do not allow water to boil in the collectors. Make sure all collector passages and piping gravity drain automatically In no -flow conditions. Slope all piping and use vacuum relief at the collector high point to facilitate draining. For drain -back pool heating, please consult the Heliodyne "Solar Pool Heatina with Gobi Collectors" guidelines. NON -AQUEOUS: In some cases, a non -water base fluid may be a design options. Recommended fluid is Bra=888 synthetic hydrocarbon, undiluted. Do not flush with water when using non -aqueous fluids. System design criteria differ from glycol systems. Use only components compatible with the fluid. Recommended flow rate is 11 BTU per square foot of collector per hour and OF. ITTU ttl :I_LL 1. Visually inspect the collectors and hardware to verify structural integrity; 2. In case of accidental glass breakage, cover the collector and protect the Inside from weather until a replacement can be made. Use low Iron tempered solar glass 5/32' thick and consult Heliodyne instructions. 3. Check your Systems Manual for proper operation of the system and inspect for leaks; 4. Check collector flowrate. Excessive flow rates are to be avoided and can damage the collector, 5. When glycol is used, periodically test the water/antifreeze mixture for concentration, pH and reserve alkalinity; 6. In periods without rainfall, hose or wash off the collectors to keep efficient; 7. In an emergency, call your installer for a recommendation. rip 9lldg• !'ice? August 2, 1983 HELIODYNE, .INC 700 South 4th Street Richmond, California 94804 Attn : Thomas M. CA 04612 4151632-3505 Job No: 3303 As requested we have Investigated the collector rack mounts to determine their safe allowable load carrying capacity. The channel mount can carry 1,800 pounds when it is extended its full length of 64 inches and installed in accordance with your July 22, 1983 drawing number 145-1. This load corresponds to about 60 pounds per square foot loading on the 4 by 10 collector and about 75 pounds per square foot on the 4 by 8 collector. Of course, the collector itself may have an allowable loading that is less than these values which would govern their capacity. Sincerely, Owen H. O'Neil, S.E-. O HO: amm >j AUG 1983 HUGH M. Use Figure 9 or Figure 10 to locate and mark the standoff lag bolt holes within the installation area. Consult UniRac's SolarMount Code -Compliant Planning Aand Assembly to determine foot spacing that will meet code. Download the version for the applicable building code at www.unirac.com. Remove the tile or shake underneath each standoff location, exposing the roofing underlayment. Ensure that the standoff base lies flat on the underlayment, but remove no more material than required for the flashings to be installed properly. Use the standoff base as a template to mark lag bolt hole locations on underlayment above the center of the rafters (Fig. 9 or Fig. 10). In low -profile layouts, stagger standoffs on rafters (Fig. 9) to distrib- ute the load. When determining the distance between the rails in high-profile mode, keep in mind that the center of each rail will be offset from the standoff lag bolt holes by' /i6 of an inch. If multiple high-profile rows are to be installed adjacent to each other, it will not be possible for each row to be centered above the rafters. Low -profile mode SolarMounts Top Mounting Installing SolarMount rails Keep rail slots free of roofing grit or other debris. Foreign matter will cause bolts to bind as they slide in the slots. Installing Splices. If your installation uses SolarMount splice bars, attach the rails together (Fig. 11) before mounting the rails to the foot- ings. Use splice bars only with flush installations or those that use low -profile tilt legs. If using more than one splice per rail, con- Q tact UniRac concerning thermal expan- sion issues. Mounting Rails on Footings. Rails may be attached to either of two mounting holes in the footings (Fig. 12). Mount in the lower hole for a low profile, more aesthetically pleasing instal- lation. Mount in the upper hole for a higher profile, which will maximize airflow under the modules. This will cool them more and may enhance performance in hotter climates. Slide the %/ inch mounting bolts into the footing bolt slots. Loosely attach the rails to the footings with the flange nuts. Ensure that the rails are oriented to the footings as shown in Figure 6, 7, 9, or 10, whichever is appropriate. a I, Edge of installation area Figure 14. High-profile mode For the safest high-profile installation (Fig. 14), the aligned end of the rails must face the lower edge of the roof. Securely tighten the flange nuts on the mounting bolts after alignment is complete (28-32 ft lbs). QMount modules to the rails as soon as possible. Temperature changes may bow the rails within a few hours if module placement is delayed. I la' CuUN • i Pa8. —'I<< l DING DIWW©N 5 APPROVE® UWORM" Installation Manual 201.1 Installing the modules prewiring Modules. If modules are the Plug and Play type, no prewiring is required, and you can proceed directly to "Installing the First Module" below. If modules have standard J -boxes, each module should be prewired with one end of the intermodule cable for ease of installation. For safety reasons, module prewiring should not be performed on the roof. Leave covers off J -boxes. They will be installed when the modules are installed on the rails. Installing the First Module. In high-profile installations, the safety bolt and flange nut must be fastened to the module bolt slot at the aligned (lower) end of each rail. It will prevent the lower end clamps and clamping bolts from sliding out of the rail slot during installation. If there is a return cable to the inverter, connect it to the first module. Close the J -box cover. Secure the first module with T -bolts and end clamps at the aligned end of each rail. Allow half an inch between the rail ends and the end clamps (Fig. 15). Finger tighten flange nuts, center and align the module as needed, and securely tighten the flange nuts (15 ft lbs). Installing the Other Modules. Lay the second module face down (glass to glass) on the first module. Connect intermodule cable to the second module and close the J -box cover. Turn the second module face up (Fig. 16). With T -bolts, mid clamps, and flange nuts, secure the adjacent sides of the first and second modules. Align the second module and securely tighten the flange nuts (Fig. 17). For a neat installation, fasten cable clamps to rails with self -tapping screws. Repeat the procedure until all modules are installed. Attach the outside edge of the last module to the rail with end clamps. Trim off any excess rail, being careful not to cut into the roof. Allow half an inch between the end clamp and the end of the rail (Fig. 15). Butte County Department of Development Services TIM SNELLINGS, DIRECTOR I PETE CALARCO, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR 7 County Center Drive Oroville, CA 75965 (530) 538-7601 Telephone (530) 538-7785 Fax www.buttecounty.net/dds NOTICE TO BUILDERS Before your building permit can be issued, your plans must be checked for compliance with the California Building Codes. In addition, your plans are routed to other regulatory entities including but not limited to Planning, Public Works, Environmental Health, and the California Department of Forestry for their clearances and approvals. There are some things you can do to expedite your permit: O Make sure your application is complete. 0 Be responsive to requests from County departments for any additional materials or requirements. The Building Division places its highest priority on processing building permits as quickly as possible and each day that passes without a complete application adds to processing time. Every permit issued by the Building Official shall expire and become null and void if the work authorized by such permit is not started or completed within one year from the date of issuance of such permit. A permit may be renewed (for a fee) prior to expiration an indefinite number of times, provided construction progress has been documented by the Building Division during each year during scheduled inspections. No changes may be made in the original plans and specifications for such work. In order to reinstate action on a permit after expiration, the permittee shall pay a new full permit fee and additional plan checking and documentation may be required. Upon completion of work covered by this permit, please contact this office for final inspection. As a reminder to you, it is illegal to occupy this building or any portion of the building for which this permit is issued without a final inspection. EXPIRATION OF PERMIT APPLICATION AND REFUND POLICY Application for which a permit has not been issued will expire one year after date of application. Refunds may only be made upon written request by the person who originally paid the fees. Refunds for permit applications (not yet issued) must be requested within two years from the date of fee payment. Fees paid at the time of application are for Plan Check and administration. The Plan Check portion of fees is refundable only if the permit is cancelled or withdrawn before any plan checking is done. Building Division costs will be deducted prior to authorizing a refund and a charge of $54.99 to process the refund application will be assessed. Refunds on permits (issued) may be requested prior to the expiration of the permit, provided no work has been done pursuant to the permit. An Inspection may be required (and deducted from any refund amount) to determine no work was done. For your protection you should be aware that as "owner -builder" you are the responsible party of record on such a permit. Building permits are not required to be signed by property owners unless they are personally performing their own work. If your work is being performed by someone other than yourself, you may protect yourself from possible liability if that person applies for the proper permit in his or her name. Contractors are required by law to be licensed and bonded by the State of California and to have a business license from the city or county. They are also required by law to put their license number on all permits for which they apply. If you plan to do your own work, with the exception of various trades that you plan to subcontract, you should be aware of the following information for your benefit and protection: ° If you employ or otherwise engage any persons other than your immediate family, and the work (including materials and other costs) is $500 or more for the entire project and such persons are not licensed as contractors or subcontractors, then you may be an employer. ° If you are an employer, you must register with the state and federal government as an employer and you are subject to several obligations including state and federal ° income tax withholding, federal social security taxes, workers/ compensation insurance, disability insurance costs, and unemployment compensation contributions. There may be financial risks to you if you do not carry out these obligations, and these risks are especially serious with respect to workers' compensation insurance. ° For more specific information about your obligations under federal law, contact the Internal Revenue Service (and, if you wish, the U.S. Small business Administration). For more specific information about your obligations under state law, contact the Department of Benefit Payments and the Division of Industrial Accidents. If the structure is intended for sale, property owners who are not licensed contractors are allowed to perform their work personally or through thier own employees, without a license contractor or subcontractor, only under limited conditions. A frequent practice of unlicensed persons professing to be contractor is to secure an "owner -builder" building permit, erroneously implying that the property owner is providing his or her own labor and material personally. Building permits are not required to be signed by property owners unless they are performing their own work personally. Information about licensed contractors may be obtained by contacting the Contractors' State License Board's automated telephone information system at 1-800-321 -CLSB (2752) or by accessing thier website at www.CSLB.ca.gov. PLEASE COMPLETE AND RETURN THE ENCLOSED OWNER -BUILDER VERIFICATION FORM SO THAT WE CAN CONFIRM THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF THESE MATTERS.
