LOAD CONDITIONS AND PROCEDURE For the purpose of measuring the deflection of the extreme comers of a pad relative to the perimeter of the pier, an oversized steel plate was installed Integral with the pier With dial indicators mounted on it. When the range included a reading of more than 5W. PSF over or under the target pressure of either 1000 or 2000 PSF, the footprint was abandoned and the procedure repeated until an.acceptabie footprint could be found. The test rig consisted of 4 - W1 2x22 I -Beams tied to ground anchors resist the jacking loads. The rig was pushed against and , therefore added no weight to the pad. T , p , only additional weight added was that of the block pier; approximately 125,lbs. for single stacked p rs and 157 lbs. for double stacked piers. Load was applied at 5001b. Load increments and the deflection after 'seconds of each application was recorded. See Data Sheet. The 5001b. Load increments were re -ated until 2.5 times the Live Load + dead Load was reached. Loads were applied as they would o ur under actual in-service conditions. Loads were applied by means of an Ener-Pac hydraulic jack with a g ge measuring pressure on the piston. The jack came with instructions indicating conversion from psipounds. Both units are pre- sented on the data sheets. Thejack was checked for accuracy with a 'nail steel frame and a cali- brated load cell with digital read-out. Although no requirement exists for measuring the pier settlement, it w Is felt to be noteworthy for ALL PSF soils . To accomplish this, a string was attached to two adjacent ers and read with a tape measure. . Loads were applied in 500 pound increments according to the Florida pules for pier tesing. The overload at 2.5x (LL+DL) was held for 5 minutes and again defle4ons were read , the load removed and residual deflections were read after a 5 minute interval or at the tie at which gauge movement had ceased. Three assemblies of each pad design were tested for a given soil beating. See DATA, 00 -MH 15-TDE PAGE 2 of 11 EER :V..:� f c. IV. DISCUSSION The soil in which the pads were tested represented a less than desi ble condition for testing and less than realistic as the ground under a home where the pads are used dry when the unit is installed according to proper installation procedures. The test soil was not rated, but was wet enough to create inconsistent results as can be seen upon close analysis of t four data points at the pad comers. The Ultimate Load test procedure requires that the dead load be apied and that 1141-1- readings be taken. However, more data was desired due to the conditions and termediate readings were taken between the ten minute intervals. Also, this procedure indicates thad .5x LL be applied, but, not knowihig the Live Loads and Dead Loads, the ultimate load factor was.applie to LL + DL, exceeding the required ultimate by approximately 20% (e.g. 4000# design load represents a, pacing of T -X o.c. for 20 PSF roof and a 14 -wide unit which requires an ultimate of 8,330#, whereas te; ed load was 10,000#). Deflections were taken according to procedure , but limits for this ty of component are not given. One established and used test for thin footer pads implied a limit of one If an inch (112"). Reference APA Technical Note E450, September, 1990. Another recognized testin agency in foundation related com- ponents indicates that a limit of 3/8" relative to the pier perimeter is ptable. Both limits were analyzed. V. RESULTS All assemblies passed the overload requirement of the FMHCSS (Ull qualify under the live load and dead load conditions and the constru for manufactured home construction.
