SITE RECONNAISSANCE An engineer from Kleinfelder visited the site on July 9, 1992. At the time of our visit, excavations for tower foundations (involving three, square piers) had been completed. Each pier excavation was in excess of 6 feet square (in plan dimensions) and 10 feet deep. Subsurface materials observed within each excavation generally involved a thin later of soil (less than 1 -foot -thick) underlain by moderately -fractured, slightly -to -moderately weathered metavolcanic rock. Typically, rock observed appeared strong and was less weathered at depths in excess of 5 feet. PIER FOUNDATIONS Axial Capacities Based on our observations and experience within the site area, it is our opinion cast -in- place concrete piers constructed within existing, on-site excavations may use an allowable end bearing pressure of 10,000 pounds per square foot (psf) to resist vertical, downward loads and a unit skin friction of 800 psf to resist either upward or downward loads. The allowable end bearing pressure provided is a net value; therefore, the weight of the pier may be neglected when estimating downward axial capacities. Total, downward capacity estimated from the parameters provided above may be increased by 33 percent for short- term loads due to wind or seismic forces. 23-4387-01/R1995 Page 1 of 2 Copyright 1992 Meinfelder Inc. This value does not include elastic compression of the pier under design loads. A majority of the settlement should occur shortly after the loads are applied. Bottom Preparation Pier excavations should be cleaned such that less than 1 inch of loose soil or water remains at the bottom of the hole. Concrete Placement Concrete used for pier construction should be discharged vertically into the excavated holes to minimize aggregate segregation. Under no circumstances should concrete be allowed to free -fall against either the steel reinforcement or the sides of the excavation during pier construction. In order to develop the design skin friction value provided above, concrete used for pier construction should have a slump of from 4 to 6 inches if placed in a dry shaft. LIMITATIONS We have prepared this report for your exclusive use in substantial accordance with the generally accepted geotechnical engineering practice as it exists in the site area at the time of our study. The project site is identified only by Assesors Parcel number 69-52-38. Arrived on the job site at approximately 1400 hrs. Several deficiencies were noted to the contractor for correction: 1) vertical reinforcing steel was resting directly on the earth - contractor Advised that he will correct; 2) the vertical reinforcement at the top of the footing was too close to the surface in the forms. 3) the pier footing excavations are shown on the approved drawings as being belled at the bottom an extra 6" and tapering to excavation side wall at a two to one slope. This had not been accomplished at the time of our visit. Due to the rocky-natureofthe earth at this location,'Bob Leedy elected to contact the engineer regarding the bell at the excavation bottom. Microflect engineer Allen Helt advised that according to the skin friction value assigned in the soil report by Klienfelder, the bell shown at the bottom of their typical footing detail was not necessary. We requested that Mr. Helt fax us a revised detail reflecting this change.
