We understand that the owner plans to construct a home on the site. A wood deck will be constructed adjacent to the homesite above the fill. Loads for the deck will be on the order of 50 pounds per square foot, dead plus live loads. Building loads for the home were not available at this time. The scope of our work consisted of a site visit and report to provide you with the allowable bearing capacity, foundation considerations and lateral earth pressures for retaining wall considerations based upon our field observations and limited laboratory testing program. Site investigation On August 1, 1991, a staff geologist from Vector Engineering, Inc. visited the site and made observations of the building pad. At the time of our visit, the site had been graded by cutting into the hillside and placing the fill in a sliver along the east side of the building pad. The fill was approximately 5-6 feet deep and consisted of reddish brown gravelly sand. We understand that the home will be founded entirely in the cut. Bedrock at the site consisted of reddish brown, hard, fractured metavolcanic rock. The gravels in the fill consisted entirely of broken fragments of the bedrock. We discussed the site with the neighbor who indicated that the excavation of the site had been moderately difficult and had been performed approximately five years prior. Regional Geology and Seismicity_ The Lake Oroville area is located in Mesozoic age metavolcanic rocks along the western flank of the Sierra Nevada. The most recent major seismic activity occurrence in the vicinity was the 1975 Cleveland Hills fault located south of the Oroville dam along the Oroville-Bangor Highway and approximately 8 miles south of the proposed building site. This event measured Mr. John Gies Page No. 2 August 21, 1991 5.7 on the Richter scale with a maximum surface rupture of 5 centimeters (CDMG Special Pub. 42). This fault was not previously known to be of Holocene age (10,000 years). A Maximum Credible Earthquake Event (MCE) of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale is considered likely for any branch of the Sierra Nevada foothills fault system by the California Division of Mines and Geology (CDMG Spec. Publ. 54, 1979). This is equivalent to a bedrock acceleration of 0.25 'g', where 'g' is the acceleration due to gravity. Because of the relatively thin layer of overburden at this site, the bedrock acceleration _ can .be.taken,as the ground surface acceleration. The Uniform'Buildirig Code places this area in,Seismic.Zone.3_(iJBC, 1988), 'This area lies in a California Alquist--Piiolo Special Study Zone of 1972. Our preliminary field investigation did not uncover any evidence of faulting. The owner of the adjacent homesite indicated that no damage occurred at their residence during the 1977 earthquake. "This value may be�increased by one-third for total loads including wind and seismic forces. Footings width may be a minimum of 9 inches provided that the foundation is embedded by trenching into the bedrock at least 18 inches to provide sufficient resistance to sliding and overturning. In the event that the required depth of embedment is not possible or is difficult to obtain due to the presence of hard bedrock, the depth of embedment may be decreased to a minimum of 9 inches provided that the footings are doweled into the bedrock and reinforced with appropriate size and spacing of rebar as indicated in Table 1. The bars shall be centered in the footing and extend a minimum of 12 inches into the stem wall. The holes shall be blown out with compressed air prior to bar placement to remove the cuttings. The bars shall be either epoxied or cemented into the holes with a non -shrink portland cement. Prior to placing the footing concrete, the rock shall be cleaned of dust and dirt as practical. Backfill shall be placed and compacted at least 6 inches above the top of all footings which have been constructed on bedrock. All surface drainage on the site shall be diverted away from all footings. It must be noted that structures which are constructed partially on fill and partially on bedrock have a tendency to settle differentially. It can be expected that the portion of the footing constructed on fill will settle more than the portion constructed on bedrock. It is our recommendation that all footings be excavated and founded on bedrock so that this type of differential settlement does not occur. RetainingWalls Retaining walls capable of deflecting at the top a distance equal to at least 0.01 times the height of the backfill (active earth pressures develop) may be designed using an equivalent fluid pressure of 45 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) with a level backfill. Backfills sloping at 1-1/2:1 or (11111r�, a should be designed using a 80 pcf equivalent fluid pressure. 'Resistance to sliding may BF—achieved through passive resistance at the toe orb friction y acting along the base. An equivalent fluid pressure of 300 pcf under passive conditions and a coefficient of friction of 0.35 may be used for concrete placed neat against native soil or properly placed and compacted fill. The friction angle may be increased to 0.45 for footings supported by properly placed granular fill. Granular free -draining fill should be placed the full wall height behind the retaining wall to serve as a drainage system. A wall drainage system should be incorporated into the fill design to prevent the buildup of water behind the wall. The pressures .above do not include hydrostatic forces. As an alternative to granular backfill, there are several geosynthetic products available which should provide similar drainage conditions. Foundation support for the proposed wood deck may consist of shallow straight shaft drilled piers. Piers may be designed for total dead plus live loads using an allowable bearing pressure of 10,000 psf 12 -inch diameter piers supported on the bedrock. The piers should extend through the fill and bear directly on the bedrock. Where the pier does not extend through the bedrock, the bedrock should be drilled to a minimum depth of 6 inches. The recommendations presented in this report are based upon our field observations, engineering analysis and a review of appropriate literature. If any soils, bedrock or groundwater Mr. John Gies August 21, 1991 Page No. 4 conditions are encountered during or prior to construction which differ from those described herein, the Engineer should be notified immediately so that appropriate changes to our recommendations can be made. Additionally, if the scope of the proposed construction changes from that described herein, or in the associated proposal, our recommendations should also be reviewed and modified as necessary. This report was prepared in accordance with generally accepted soils and foundation engineering practices applicable at the time the report was prepared. Vector Engineering, Inc., makes no other warranties, either expressed or implied, as to the professional advice provided under the terms of this agreement, and as described in this report. Our recommendations consist of professional opinions and conclusions, based on our testing program, and the assumption of an adequate program of testing and inspection during construction. It is recommended that we be provided the opportunity for a general review of the final design documents in order that our recommendations may be properly interpreted and implemented. The scope of our services did not include any environmental assessment or investigation for the presence or absence of wetlands, hazardous or toxic materials in the soil, surface water, groundwater or air, on or below or around this site.
